When I was in uni, my (now) wife bought tickets to see Tracy in concert. I was blown away. Just a small woman, a guitar, and a mic stand. She filled the room with her voice. One of the best concert experiences of my life.

She is criminally underrated. She was on the scene for such a brief time and I never understood why. She has such a down to earth voice.

She is greatly loved and lauded. Not underrated in the least. As for brief time: Eight albums over twenty years. So ... there's that.

@ToddWarner she may have been lauded by fans that knew that she continued to make music but she more or less completely dropped out of the spotlight in a fairly brief period of time. Sadly, I didn't know she made that many albums. I'll have to check them out.

she is very shy and the big audiences were difficult for her. with her recent Grammy appearance, we are so hoping she is back..at least a little bit. Her last performance was on David Letterman’s last show. No one knew it was the last one and then..the Grammy’s with Luke Combs…hope is alive.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written and one of the most beautiful vocal performances by anyone. What a story, so easy to see, like a masterpiece painting by the wonderful Tracy Chapman.

The tragic thing is, the protagonist (not Tracy herself) repeated her mother's mistake, hooking up with a deadbeat just like her dad, who only used her. She couldn't see him for what he was, because he love-bombed her and made her feel special, probably for the first time in her life. She started out with a plan ("I've got a plan to get us outta here") and the drive to achieve it, but he sapped her hope and strength till it was nearly gone ("I ain't got no plan, I ain't goin' nowhere"). The slight ray of hope at the end is that she's on the verge of finally kicking him out ("take your fast car and keep on driving"/"you gotta make a decision") Instead of running away like her mother and leaving her kids with the deadbeat dad, she stays with the kids and gives him the ultimatum instead. Maybe this way she can pass some of her values on to the children and keep them in school so that they have more of a chance to break the tragic cycle of poverty. Or maybe, once the parasite guy is gone, she can finally save more money and achieve some of her dreams with her kids. Of course that's not in the song, but that's what I'd wish for them with all my heart! ❤

Tracy went to Tufts University in Boston and used to busk in Harvard Square and in the subway . So many of us walk by street and subway entertainers leading our busy lives and we often ignore these talented musicians. What a shame to rush past this talent while she was performing.

First time I heard this song I was immediately amazed at her fantastic voice and her delivery of some of the best lyrics . Immediately took me back to the best songwriters of the 60's and 70's. She was so under appreciated, imo. Definitely check out any suggestions you get, you won't be disappointed. Thanks so much for a great reaction as always. Peace out. ✌🤗😃

She just looks so relaxed, she's amazing ❤ I can't believe you didn't know what she looked like. Yes! That IS bad! At least you knew the song, so you're somewhat redeemed 😜 My hubby had the album this was taken from, and he played it every dayyyyy. I got really irritated after a while. Tracy's career took off when she performed at the old Wembley Stadium in 1988. She had performed earlier in the afternoon but was gifted a huge opportunity when the great Stevie Wonder misplaced his backing tape and someone had to go on quick. From Tracy and her fans perspective, the rest is history. Here are her Wembley performances of Fast Car kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpa9pHSVmM5gbac and Talkin' About a Revolution kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqebd3WgpJaMbqs Brilliant both. Thanks BP1!

None of us know what the talent level is from radio play. With the heavy hand of music producers, listeners have no way to know if the sounds are created by the artist or the studio!
@psidvicious
@psidvicious Жыл бұрын
Very very true, which unfortunately means “the look” has taken over for “the substance” as the most important factor for today’s performers. Function now follows form. I suspect Tracy was/is a bit more of a purist though, considering the time period she made her bones in music, in the 80’s. Today, studio or live these synthesized signal processors work at the speed of electricity (which is indistinguishable from the speed of light, to the ear) so “anyone” can be the next superstar. Why not pick the beautiful person over the one with the warts. They’ll both sound great with a little help from electricity. You watch, now with A.I., the pretty face won’t even be necessary. Even the look will go synthetic.

Goosebumps. Hits every time. Banger.😂Very talented. Straight line from Joan Armatrading to Tracy Chapman. I had Chapman's first 4 albums. I think there's a touch of Labi Siffre to her sound ① It's probably best to react to the whole of Tracy Chapman's "Tracy Chapman". The other three albums I know have songs worth reacting to, too. Best Wishes, Chaps. ☮ I like: "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", "Give Me One Reason" (Tracy Chapman & Eric Clapton live version?), "Why?", "Behind the Wall" (acappelle), "Across the Lines", "If not now", "For My Lover", "Baby Can I Hold You". Tracy Chapman puts a lot of her time and effort into Human Rights. From Wikipedia: _"Chapman often performs at charity events such as Make Poverty History, amfAR, and AIDS/LifeCycle."_ David Letterman's last few shows included artists and songs he wanted. Tracy Chapman did "Stand by Me". ① Tracy Chapman's vibrato reminds me of Labi Siffre, who was more 'Pop' in his early years than Tracy Chapman, Labi Siffre: "Something Inside So Strong", "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying", "My Song", "Watch Me". Madness covered "It Must Be Love", and had Siffre in the MV 😀
