their idea for this music video specifically was each members idea of what they think love is. Each movie is what the members personally associate with What Is Love? its quite interesting and the music video just becomes a whole lot meaningful. Thanks for checking it out. Your theories about this video are brilliant! I’ve seen it so many times and I never saw it as a coming of age story, but now that you’ve pointed out how throughout the video they get progressively “older”, I totally see it. Like, before they really know what love is, and when they only experience it from seeing it on TV, they’re young, innocent, and hopeful. But as they get older and experience it for themselves, they get hit with a rollercoaster of emotions, good and bad, and they’re no longer innocent. Love can emotionally scar you, and I think that’s why they included the clip of Jihyo crying while watching herself on the TV at 10:32. But it’s also fun and magical, as portrayed in the rest of the movie references. Throughout the video, they gain more experience with love and relationships, and at the end they’re more mature because of it. The references also follow the timeline through life (high school, college, adulthood). Y’all have great insight, and I’m not sure if you’re right or not, but I’m kinda hoping you are!

In the beginning of the song the say that they see love in books and movies but they’ve never experienced it so they are wondering what love is while watching classic romantic movies or like chick flicks such as Lala Land and The princess diaries (the part where they are at school) and they want to know what it feels like to fall in love so they are anticipating it and want to experience I think they are trying to represent young girls cause that what we girls tend to dream of while we are growing, idk if I’m explaining myself correctly, English is not my first language so it’s quite hard to explain but I hope you will read this and understand. In addition to what has already been mentioned, Twice were formed from a show called Sixteen, where Sixteen JYP trainees competed for a spot in the group. Initially, the group was to be seven members, but JYP decided to add Momo, who had been eliminated earlier in the series, and Tzuyu, who had topped the public's popularity chart to make it a nine member group. They enjoyed pretty much immediate success following their debut, and didn't take long before a song had achieved #1 status in Korea, with Cheer Up. Comparisons were immediately drawn to Girls' Generation/SNSD, an older group also originally with nine members, and many perceive Twice to be SNSD's successor as 'the nation's girl group'. There are 5 Koreans, 3 Japanese and 1 Taiwanese in the group, and the Taiwanese member, Tzuyu, was a source of great controversy when she was pictured supporting the Republic of China flag. Despite this being the national flag of her home country, the Chinese government (as in, the People's Republic of China) blacklisted her from search engines and dropped several advertisements with her and the group; this in turn led to a protest in Taiwan in support of her which some 10,000 people attended, and JYP had Tzuyu make an apology video which itself due serious criticism for seeming like a hostage video more than anything else. It took a while for commercial relations to be restored with Twice and China, which of course is an enormous market for them. Many groups have Chinese members, in part to help them gain access to this market; so Tzuyu as a Taiwanese girl has been a source of sizeable tension in this regard. She is also the youngest of the group, at 19, turning 20 in June. Nayeon is the oldest at 23, turning 24 in September. They debuted in October 2015, so the girls were very young when this started, and younger still of course during the filming of Sixteen. As has been mostly said, the movies being parodied in this video are The Princess Diaries, Ghost, Pulp Fiction, La Boum, Romeo and Juliet, Love Letter, La La Land and Leon. Dahyun's rap part is intended to be like a commercial break. The overall theme of the song is about how love is portrayed on TV or film and the extent to which love is actually like how it is shown; and if they can really learn about it just from watching portrayals of it/how they wish they could feel it themselves to see how those characters are really feeling. As with most groups, it would be cool to see you react to their songs starting from the beginning to see their progression. Their debut is Like Ooh Ah; I'd love to see that as your next foray into Twice. Keep up the good work boys, you're making great content here for us kpop nerds.

"What is Love" M/V is them projecting themselves into their favourite movies (At least for the M/Vs sake). Fun fact: All the lead actors used in all the movie shots are members of Twice dressed up, even the guys!. Definitely react to more Twice! Of their M/Vs my favourites are "Likey" and "TT"! They have a lot of comebacks including a very recent one "Yes or Yes" (Which has a fantastic mini album along with it!) and a few months before that was "Dance the Night Away".
