Ren's auto-immunity issues stem from the fact that he had misdiagnosed Lyme disease for 6-7 years. It ravaged his body, his nerves, his brain, and his mental stability. Additionally, since they mistakenly diagnosed him with M.E. (chronic fatigue syndrome), bipolar disorder, and various other things during those years, he also suffered from the side effects of those medications. He has been getting proper treatment for the last 7 years, but he still has a host of issues (unable to process most foods, etc...).

The first time I heard this song it was like a fog lifted. That voice had been winning for so long I’d all but given up. That was two months ago, since then I’ve started writing again, and I’m working on getting back in shape. It felt like Plato’s cave and Ren was tapping on my shoulder and pointing to the exit behind him.

For rock singing, you might be interested in a busking day he did with his band The Big Push -- look for Ren in red suspenders on the thumbnails. Four songs on KZbin from that day, pick any or all: "I Shot The Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop", "War Pigs", their original song "Watch Out", and the finale "Paint It Black". Fantastic performances and fantastic audio, and I'd love to get your vocal insights!

I originally found you from your Dimash reactions, I'm tickled you found Ren. The Renegades are just as great of a community as are the Dears. As many have (and will) mention, Ren's been through his own list of issues. You'll get a TON of suggestions (and the rabbit hole is deep), so here are mine. 🙂 If you want to hear more of his health struggles with another message of hope, check out Troubles (video, not acoustic). If you want to hear some of his singing voice, Back on 74 / Message in a Bottle (Live retake) is really worth checking out. As is his "Chalk Outlines (live) collab with Chinchilla (who is a powerhouse) He has so many genres to choose from, you really can't go wrong. Another popular singing video is with his band The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (red suspender video). I'll stop for now. Heh. It really is nice to see you back at it.

Ren's said and the song makes clear, that this is about the human condition generally and not about chronic or mental illness specifically. Those things are referenced, alongside music and the creative process, as Ren is telling it through the lens of his own experience and those things have been the dominant forces in his life. It's also about accepting that darkness is part of existence, part of life, part of us and helps to shape our lives and who we are, often in surprisingly positive ways. Once we stop wasting time and energy in the impossible and frustrating task of trying to banish the dark, life becomes that little bit easier and the dark a little easier to deal with, generally speaking. :)

I just saw your Hi Ren reaction, and put this journal entry of Ren's as my comment to that reaction. jAN 01, 2023 rEN~ Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticize or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed. I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head. When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus. These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between. My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished. My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world. The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war. For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person. I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought. Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours. I can't wait for you all to hear it.

Ren is a big advocate for ME/CFS, in fact there's an amazing documentary made about the condition and others related to it, in 2017 by a woman, Jennifer Brea and her husband. Ren has a small part in it and one of his songs is featured in the movie. The thing about not being religious is that the symbols like that don't have any reverence. So people comfortably wear them as fashion items. I own several cross pendants because they were very fashionable in the 90s/00s, but I live in a pretty secular country and dislike the way most organised Christian religion is expressed these days. I never wore them as an expression of particular faith. I have a couple of Egyptian ankhs and some cameos stuff intaglios featuring Roman gods and goddesses too and consider them all in a similar vein. They're pretty pieces and associated with stories, myths, and legends that are interesting to explore.

So Ren is also not religious. He is actually agnostic but spiritual . Ren has been diagnosed with M.E., MCAS and then ultimately Lyme disease… and probably a couple other things that I don’t know about. He has fought for his health most of his life. If you want to know more about his health struggles, he has eight chapters on his other channel called RenMakesStuff. Us RENagades love watching new people fall down his rabbit hole. He can do just about any genre. He plays many instruments (self taught) and he is very inspiring. I subscribed so I can watch your journey finding out who he is and his music. Enjoy.

I def have an "ugly" voice that I've had to learn is a liar 99% of the time. My husband, says he doesn't have that negative voice (and I actually believe him, he's a very 'solve it and move on' type person, nor does he give AF what anyone thinks). So I'm not convinced EVERYONE has this, but the majority of people I know have had this self-reflection/fight with themselves.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Many of us "Renegades" have chronic health issues which have altered our lives and make day to day living a challenge. Having heard your intro I predict you will be wishing you listened (not necessarily reacted) to Ren as you were actually struggling. Please listen to the Renegades as to what song they point you to and in what general order. We see lots of reactors and have a general idea of what songs will suit what reactor to get going on the journey into Ren's rabbit hole. From my perspective, I suggest I often suggest *The Tales of Jenny and Screech (official video with Violet's Tale) followed by the *Money Game trilogy. However, I think you would do best to watch his official video of *Troubles followed by the acoustic version of the same song. With Ren, although the acoustic is often even more impactive than the official; it is best to watch the official first to get more of a grip of the story line. Then hear the sublime acoustics after. Akin to eating main course before pudding (dessert). It is part of being human (as Ren says) to converse with yourself. Keeps us alive. Scenario: Quick, cross the road...; no, wait till the truck passes first...; no, we can run...; what if we trip halfway across the road.... You will understand the She Sells Seashells line more after seeing *Money Game II.

This ended up being a very good reaction. Thank you. I do want to point out that you did start the reaction in a very dismissive manner. Giving you an "I'm a rock star and this person should feel honoured that I'm spending some of my time on them". I did start to feel a bit pissed off because of that but I'm glad I carried on watching until the end. I think once you realised Ren might actually be worthy of your time. This reaction became a really great thing to watch! Thank you again for a great Ren reaction. 😁

Ren has been living through hell for 13 years before this release, He is the definition of a tortured soul. L copied this and post it on new reactors messages. He was bitten by a tick when he was 16 or 17 He got really sick from it and went to doctors and they could not figure what was wrong with him. When he had joint pain, muscle spasms, skin rashes, boils, internal organs started shutting down, And Doctors had no idea what was going on. He was loosing weight and had constant fatigue could not even stand to shower.. Doctors started sending him to psychological evaluations, They told him his mind was making him sick ! And started treating him for that with some heavy pharmaceuticals. And all that shit really fucked with his mind, He started believing he was crazy. And this went on for 8 fucking years !! 8 YEARS !! He pursued his own symptoms and lead to a Doctor that gave test for Lyme disease. Where he lived it was very rear to ever contract Lyme disease so he was never tested. When he went in described his symptoms the Doctor knew what he had. Ran the DNA test and found it in his system. However it has been in there for 8 years and has done a lot of damage to his body. He can only eat like 6 things his bones still hurt and the autoimmunity may never be healed. He had to go into surgery to remove tissue to generate stem cells grown outside his body then under go treatment taking the stem cells to remove the Lyme disease chromosome. That was in LA then he went to Calgary and under going treatment on the damage the Lyme left.. He is still there until July
