I liked it when you said "great voice"! Because Aznavour, when he started singing, was destroyed by critics saying he couldn't sing, he had no voice, he was too short, too ugly.. Despite of all the critics he became a legend in France, in Armenia and abroad. He was a poet. He wrote the most beautiful songs.. He was also an actor. Like Jacques Brel, they were great performers. Great stage presence.

La bohème. I’m in my sixties. I first heard this song when I was about 8 years old and it touched me so much, I don’t know why. I have heard it hundreds of times since and I get emotional every time. Charles Aznavour has so many great songs: « Hier encore », « Mourir d’aimer », « Non je n’ai rien oublié », « Il faut savoir », « Emmenez-moi », « Et pourtant » , « Les comédiens », « Désormais », « Je me voyais déjà ». He was also a comedian and played in many films.

Charles Aznavour "lived" his songs (he wrote a lot of them). I love "Comme ils disent", "Emmenez-moi". "La Mama" is a very famous one of his. He had a long and very successful carreer (worked into his late 80s). Definitely a monument in French music, even though he came to France as a young immigrant from Armenia. Wonderful author, musician, singer and actor.

Aznavour had a very famous interview with a very toxic and arrogant journalist. The guy was pestering him, "You're not pretty, you're short, you're balding, you're an Armenian migrant." Very humble, Aznavour simply answered "Yes, yes, all of that is true." But when the guy started to say "and your voice..." Aznavour didn't let him finish. He simply struck a chord on his piano, then another one, a full octave higher. "My voice? Now I'm sorry but THAT'S my voice." This was the best "Shut up, bitch!" moment I've ever seen.

the flowers at the end that no longer bloom is symbolic of our lives.. he is no longer 20 years old, no longer in the spring of his life...the woman, the dreams, the joy of living out your dreams even if poor... all of that is gone, he is now in the end of the fall or the winter of his life... he is old.. worn...the dream has been broken...that is why he throws the tissue at the end... this man was a national treasure here in France but his roots are Armenian and he talked and sang in armenian too

Hello Dereck, very happy to watch you reacting to our music... thanks. You must have a past or karmic connexion with France, that's for sure lol You will discover more hits from this "iconic" singer of our who passed away recently. What is interesting about this song and why it has been so famous around the world is because he's talking about one of the most famous places in Paris : Montmartre. It's a place your will discover that's for sure and I hope so with all your faithfull followers ;-) It's "the" mountain of Paris where lays the Cathedral Sacré Coeur and it was in the 19th and 20th century something like a village from where you could see all Paris. It's filled with soooo much History and especially there a place called La place du Tertre where painters have always gathered to paint and sell their art. Still today but it's more "folklore" than the time he's singing about. Artists used to gather, poor most of them but inspired buy the place...... so many great artist have sung there in the street , like Edith Piaf whom you know already and ZAZ that you ounce reacted on. Beautilful day or night to you. You really do a great job to make our music alive again and help us also appreciate it more and even discover some songs lol I can't find the french t-shirt you've created on your store. can you add a link to your videos ? bye take great care of you

When he talks about the dead lilacs, he is referring to "Les Lilas", an area on the border of Paris. There used to be more artists there because there was cheaper renting prices (just like in Montmartre). Serge Gainsbourg also made a reference to that place in "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas", his first success.

One of the most magical experiences is seeing him perform this song in his 90s (he toured pretty much until the very end of his remarkable life). He and Piaf are the holy grail of what is known as the “chanson” culture, the uniquely French storytelling through song art of “speak-singing”. Liza Minnelli still claims he was the one who shaped her as a singer and actress on stage. She covered quite a few of his songs and they performed together on multiple occasions, most brilliantly in 1991 in Paris - I recommend you that show, it’s widely available on KZbin. Electrifying from the opening number “The Sound of Your Name” through the end. That man was a genius. On the stage, on the screen and in life, as a philanthropist and a mentor to many.
