Note: They were shockingly large in the late-1970s. They crushed Elvis for a time -- something very few have ever achieved. They were overtaken by Elvis again in the 1980s (his post-death comeback, as it were), along with MJ and Madonna by 1984 or so. Music radically shifted in the 1990s for a few reasons, with many female singers and new rock bands taking home the sales, until Eminem circa 1999 through 2007, followed by Rihanna circa 2008-2013 (give or take, I cannot recall the years). This is by record sales and other metrics. But the Eagles were shockingly popular, is my point; namely, around 1977.

Randy we miss you) “New Kid in town” “Take it easy” and more. This is your new rabbit hole. The Eagles have a broad range of hits-Desperado, Lyin' Eyes and Take it Easy to name a few. They had a very healthy run as a band. I am 61 and was graced with the music of the era. My take on it was the fall into drugs. She was the drug that hooked him. He enjoyed the trips at the beginning (mirrors on the ceiling, pink champagne on ice) but they became nightmares. (stabbing the beast but couldn't kill it) He became addicted. He tried to fight his addiction running for the door) but could never kick it. "You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave." Our music was so awesome and pure talent. Actually playing an instrument instead of computer generated sound. Amazing voices that were real and not fed through a machine to improve a lacking quality. I'm just saying...we had THE music.

Don Henley wrote these words to Don Felder's chord progression on a drunken trip, driving through the desert after leaving the Whiskey A-go-go club in LA. He went to find some peyote, and on the way he passed lots of cactus and lonely motels, and wrote this song about going from adolescence to adulthood, taking on those responsibilities and never being able to go back to childhood. A loss of innocence.

A great companion to this song, released about the same time, is Jackson Browne's The Pretender. It refers to the same mid-70's vibe fall of the peace & love movement of the 1960's ("We haven't had that spirit here since 1969") into rampant consumerism. While Hotel California is told from the perspective of someone who is trapped in the excesses of the 70's, while the Pretender's protagonist is one who has given up in despair and has voluntarily slipped into a life with no larger meaning than self-involvement.
