Hah! I had just recommended you react to Diana! (I didn't bother to check out your existing reactions -- I didn't imagine you'd have gotten to Diana already!) But you've reacted to a different song/video from the same singing show -- and therein lies a tale I want to share. This Wicked Game song is in English, and is a well known song, which makes it hit different than the song/video I suggested, Rechenka, which is a Russian song. But I think they're both shamanic interpretations, so you should feel a continuity despite them being utterly different songs, genres, vibes, performances. The background to both, the spirit underlying both this and her Rechenka, (and, indirectly, her Can't Help Falling In Love from 4 years later when she was 18) is to do with her alcoholic biological mother, and freedom from her. Her biological mother had abandoned her with a broken collarbone at a bus stop in winter when she was 3 years old! Yep; you might want to spend a couple minutes glancing at her wikipedia page because her childhood forged her character as she crawled out of the fires of hell, with near non-verbal responsiveness and a speech impediment when she did speak, and a doctor suggested to the orphanage she was at encourage her to sing to try help her heal. (And boy did she heal!) Fast forward a decade and her biological mother got wind of her fame as a young singer. So she got back in touch with Diana telling her she loved her and wanted to take her away from her adoptive family, if necessary by legal means. Yep, truth is stranger than fiction, and in this case more terrifying. This naturally stressed the fuck out of Diana who was suddenly afflicted with vitiligo, which then so disfigured her face that it threatened to trash her singing career and she ended up saying she wanted to stop being a singer! Fortunately the producer of the show -- Igor Krutoy, who you will get to know soon enough because he's intimately connected with Dimash and Diana and another fantastic star you will also soon enough be checking out, Lara Fabian -- persuaded Diana that he would not let the law work against her, and that she owed it to herself and the world to face her fears, and so she decided to forge ahead and perform songs at this show. Note that in this performance you've just watched, the lighting was unusual; I suspect that part of that was to hide make up work they'd done to hide the vitiligo, though maybe I'm imagining that. Anyhow, these two songs both reflect this situation. Diana tweaked the lyrics of Wicked Game to that effect. In the original the line "I don't want to fall in love" is repeated, with one repeat being followed by "with you". That last aspect is dropped in Diana's version to dramatically amplify the damage her mother was doing; as a 14 year old she had suddenly been transformed from a beautiful 14 year old girl to one with a profoundly disfigured face, arms, and legs. What hope could she have for a boyfriend? With Rechenka she turns the dial up a thousand fold. Rechenka is a Russian folk song about a daughter who is supposed to find someone to marry but has a broken relationship with their parents. Diana must have been feeling that! Think about that when you react to her performing it! Catch ya later.
