Larry Bird's IQ was out of this world. Probably the highest ever. He saw the game 3 moves ahead and was able to predict where people would be. Hence the behind the back passes, the no look passes. If you want, there is a better video with his passing called "Larry Bird greatest passer of all time (re-edit)" For the record, He is the greatest passing forward of all time. He inspired his whole team to do the same and inspired forwards to pass more. He is the archetype of the position. This is why we are having this conversation about LeBron. We have seen the pioneer and the best, it is hard to reach that pinnacle where Bird stands.

Look at his stats, watch his clutch performances. Best trash talker who called his shot. The Greatest Clutch Performance of anyone who has ever played the game. Also played defense very well. 3 straight MVP of the league as well as the first 3 point shooting contest. Played whole career with broken finger on his shooting hand. He was a fighter who never flopped, cried to the refs and played injured. He never traveled because there was no euro step. College player of the year at a school who has no players around him. Rookie of the year in 1979 with Magic Johnson in second. Changed a Celtics team with the greatest turn around in history. Took that team to the eastern conference finals against Dr. J, I can go on and on because LeBron would not be able to compete with the physical play back then. He would not know how to play against that. Larry is the Legend for a reason. Fact is he made players better who were around him.

Bird's passing was 40 years before it's time. Just like Magic and Pistol Pete. Pete Maravich was more like 70 years before his time. Perhaps you can do a reaction on Pete Maravich Ultimate College Mix Tape. Bird is throwing dimes back in the '80's that point guards in todays league can't do. Great reaction, bro!! 💯💯👍🦾

Larry was well known for his amazing "court vision / I.Q." and awareness as its called - he seemed to know where everyone was at all the time and made good use of it. Larry wasnt fast & didnt jump to the moon like the more athletic players but he seemed to more than make up for it in his own ways that made hime the legend he is.

That sharp squeak you hear at 3:16 is The Bird putting spin on his bounce pass. Kevin McHale said he tried that once and threw the ball out of bounds, but The Bird did it all the time.

Nice reaction! There are some videos out there that show Larry making 15 to 20 full court football passes; he always looked up court first when he got his hands on the ball on D. That's simply fundamental, but everyone wants to take off dribbling. I wonder how the "athletes" of today would handle a pure passing team. His vision was something else!

That inbounding steal against the Pistions, he knew DJ (Dennis Johnson) was running toward the basket so he knew to throw to him instead of toward the 3 point line. There's a lot of discussion on the chemistry that existed between Larry and DJ, and how they many times instinctively knew what the other was going to do. DJ said he saw what was about to happen so he started breaking toward the bucket. If that chemistry didn't exist, that play wouldn't have happened. It would have been a steal for nothing. Larry even stated that DJ was the best player he ever played with.

Sometimes I feel that it's def the IQ not just because of d.j it's a fact a center will run toward the basket, as long as players do what their position Is soppose to do, I think you can predict where they might be

@@urbangearmanGood point about general IQ affecting the game. DJ was the point guard, though, not the center.

BOS v DET. Larry and DJ were almost telepathic. That number 12 guy has actually said that by the time he turned around it was done and that he was more shocked than anybody that the ball had been stolen. Should he have turned around more quickly? I don’t know

Assists don't seem to be counted the same now as they were back then. Nowadays, it seems more and more often the case that you can pass some one the ball and they can dribble, make a few moves, and if they score you STILL get an assist.

Larry averaged 6.3 assists per game for his career. compared to Lebron, who is currently at like 7.3 or so. BUT Lebron controls the ball like a pg does.. so essentially Lebron plays PG. Bird did not. he RARELY held on to the ball. I will say that Bird is the BEST passer out of ANY PLAYER that ISNT ball dominant (like pgs are)..

As for the inbound steal, you will see a narrative if you keep watching Larry Bird videos is that the two highest IQ players on the Celtics was Larry Bird and #3 Dennis Johnson (DJ). There are videos how the two could read each other's minds and made bullet passes to each other (well mostly DJ to Bird, but Bird threw them back to DJ. DJ was point guard). Larry has said that when he stole the inbounds, he saw white uniform streaking in and KNEW it was DJ. There was no question who he was throwing to.

It brings up the question to do you think he'd be able to pass like this if he played for anther team with diffrent players
@trekkiexb5

@@urbangearman Yes, Larry could be dropped into any team with any players and they would catch on real quickly that Larry was a leader, unselfish, and to be ready to catch the ball. THey practiced it and made the greatest passing team ever.

I would put Bird ahead of Magic, magic has some flashier passes, but Bird always draws the defenders so the shot is open. The best highlight of this is when Magic and Larry were playing on the same team for olympic tryouts and Magic throws a no look pass to Larry who is still covered by defence, then Bird draws three defenders and no look passes back to Magic who had the wide open shot

Bird is better at clutch, midrange, long range, free throws, passing, short range and defense. James is better at lowering his shoulder and plowing through defenders. In Bird's day that would have been offensive fouling. So, in what universe could James be goat, let alone best small forward?
