I can listen to Damnation album every day. A big fan of their mellow, acoustic, and melodic sound there.

There are several paths you can take now. * Some of the "big ones" from the mid-era you've been listening to that remains is "Blackwater Park" (from Blackwater Park, 2001) and The Moor (from Still Life 1999). You can also go for Harvest (Blackwater Park, 2001) which is a calm autumny-feel-song, with a more standard composition but still is perfection is itself, so to speak (and also "Burden" (Watershed, 2008). "A Fair Judgement" (Deliverance, 2002). Porcelain Heart (Watershed, 2008). * The album Deliverance (2002) was first meant to be released as a double disc called Deliverance and Damnation - but they weren't allowed for the record company and instead made an other album release called "Damnation" (2003). The double album "Deliverance and Damnation" was however released as a remix in 2015. They were meant to reflect the opposite emotions, or something along those lines. This means that Damnation is a very calm and clean, yet progressive album, with inspiration from bands like Pink Floyd. The whole album is superb, but I would start with "Windowpane" or "In My Time of Need". *You could explore their earlier stuff - It also has a die-hard-fan-base, which I respect. But most people don't go there. it's more leaning towards black metal. A few songs I could mention here is "When" and "Demon of the Fall" (My Arms, Your Hearse, 1998). Advent (Morningrise, 1996) * Their later albums with clean vocals that goes more towards prog. "The Devils Orchard" (Heritage, 2013) (One of the songs that I actually like better live). "Moon Below, Sun Above" and "River" (Pale Communion, 2014). Sorceress (Sorceress, 2016). But when it comes to their later written material I like their latest album the most: "In Cauda Venenum", released in both Swedish and English: All Things Will Pass/Allting Tar Slut, Universal Truth/Ingen Sanning Är Allas, Continuum/Kontinuerlig Drift - harder to digest for most, but it grows on you ^^

The 14:54 mark is maybe the best part of any Opeth song, and I was listening to these guys in the late 90's.

I think to get a more like broader view of their different styles and eras, you should do one song off each album, like (I am spoiling the vibes though, beware): - Under the Weeping Moon, from their first album, very raw but shows where they started. - Black Rose Immortal, from their second album. Still very raw. - Demon of the Fall or April Ethereal, from their third album. - Godhead's Lament or White Cluster. (I think Godhead's Lament is better). - Blackwater Park, the song if you have not done that yet. - Wreath if you want to revisit Deliverance. (Or A Fair Judgement as have been requested before). - Windowpane from the album Damnation. Beautiful album and a great song as an intro song to the band, to someone who haven't heard them before. - Isolation Years, the beautiful stand-out on Ghost Reveries if you'd wish to revisit. - The Lotus Eater if you'd like to revisit Watershed. - Häxprocess from Heritage. - Eternal Rains Will Come or Faith in Others from Pale Communion. - Sorceress (Live at Red Rocks) - Allting Tar Slut. Because their last album was released both in Swedish and in English, you can choose whatever version you want but I think the Swedish is the version you should listen to. Then you can see many of the styles they have incorporated and hopefully get an even broader view of the band's music. Though I would actually suggest going through all of their albums start to finish in chronological order, but I understand that's not the norm for many reaction channels. Thank you for your reactions! :)

Again,🤘🏼🔥🤘🏼Zitronenparty, a huge thank you, and a big thank you too Luke! Luke, a mellotron, played by their keyboardist is most likely playing all of the sounds other than the drums & guitars. I'm not knowledgeable on instruments, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another commenter pointed out there is a Hammond organ in here. I did a little digging and that's definitely what I mean when I say "jazz organ." The mellotron is super cool too though!! Learning more about instruments thanks to this incredible band. Thank you! By the way, it seems like you are quite well known in Opeth circles!

New subscriber very much enjoying the content. Ghost Reveries is possibly along with Blackwater Park their stand out albums though I do like Watershed too. After Watershed they dropped the growls which divided the fans. Their following albums had a more 70's retro feel but are still outstanding. From this collection, I recommend 'Moon Above, Sun Below' or 'Faith in Others' from the album, Pale Communion or some more classic live Opeth and 'A Fair Judgement' from London's Sheperd Bush Theatre. One little point, the music seems low in your mix, turn it up a bit please, apart from that great channel.

I don't think I ever got anything concrete out of Opeth's lyrics. I tend to think they're just there to fit the mood and a vehicle for the voice as an instrument. I never looked into it, so I'm probably wrong.

With lyrics...if the band wants you to get a concrete meaning out of it, I think there needs to be enough of a breadcrumb trail for me to follow. It doesn't have to be obvious, but there needs to be something. That's my thought.

All of the songs on this album are, as the title suggests, in relation to a ghost story. Not really metaphorical or anything. The general story I think is "roughly" something to do with like a guy who performs a dark ritual(The Grand Conjuration) to resurrect someone and they return as a horrifying nightmare(the Ghost of Perdition). The hounds in this song are supposed to be the hell hounds that spawned as a result of this ritual and they are presumably chasing after the protagonist because of him dealing with such evil affairs. Like I said, thats sort of a rough interpretation of it. Ghost Reveries is considered kind of like a soft concept album with a general theme and the songs referencing each other, but all presented out of order essentially. But the atmosphere of this album to me always felt like a southern gothic horror or something.
