Gundam is a series spanning over 40 years. Think Star Wars. That's the kind of impact this long series with a lot of different stories, sometimes not in the same universe, has. A lot of voice actors got into voice acting due to Gundam, a lot of animators got into animating due to Gundam. There's people who quote characters from the series as if they were famous historic figures. It is MASSIVE.

I've really been loving Witch From Mercury, it's the show that finally got me into Gundam. Fun fact: the (lead?) writer for Gundam Witch is the *same one* as for Code Geasss! He also did the novelizations of Revolutionary Girl Utena, and there's a lot of DNA from that show in this story too.
@breanna_bee2 жыл бұрын
And since you asked near the end of the video: they've been slowly releasing kits from the new series, usually 1 or 2 new ones a month. These are all 1/144 scale ones, labeled as "High Grade" (HG), and they tend to be between $15-25. There's been a bit of a shortage in Gunpla over the last couple of years though (lower production + high demand + they need to be imported from Japan), and these new kits are absolutely flying off the shelves, so they might end up being a little pricier when all is said and done. There's also going to be bigger and more expensive kits of *some* of the Mobile Suits from the show too, but those release nowhere near as frequently. The HG line is pretty much the bread and butter one, and you can expect that most of the mechs in the show will get an HG kit at some point. All you really need to build them is a pair of clippers to snip the parts out of the plastic frames they come on, and maybe something to sand down any nub marks left behind. From there you can get into adding more detail if you want to, like by drawing darker accent/panel lines on. It's like doing makeup but on plastic robots.
@breanna_bee2 жыл бұрын
Did mention the scale compared to "how they're supposed to be" but not the actual size the model ends up being IRL: HG kits are usually about ~6 inches/~15 centimeters tall.

Main points to take away are that the franchise has been going since 1979, there is the main universe that the first Gundam began called the universal century. This means for some series you will need to have watched specific ones to view it in the correct order but that only applies to universal century shows. All other series like wing and witch from mercury take place in their own universe so don't require any knowledge of other series to understand them. Turn A comes from the mathematical term "for all X belonging to a particular universe" and then you add the parameters on a formula. 32:05 Mobile Fighter G Gundam took a break from the Universal Century timeline and set it into the Future Century alternate universe, and it swith the formula for Gundam from the real robot genre to the super robot genre, harkening back to the old Mazinger series (in fact, Yasuhiro Imagawa, who directed Shin Mazinger Z, directed G Gundam). See, original creator and director for the Gundam series, Yoshiyuki Tomino, had become burnt out after finishing Victory Gundam and took a 15-year hiatus from Gundan (he wouldn't return until he directed Reconguista in G, but he _did_ work on the story for Stardust Memory), but Sunrise wanted to keep the franchise going, so they started alternate timelines and got new directors for each one.

“The Origin" and the subsequent ones that start with "UC" can be counted as Gundam works in the UC timeline, as well as the true story of Gundam, they are more about politics and war and they are extremely profound and beautiful works, but because of the time they were created it is difficult to start from the beginning. But since the origin is a recently created work, it is also a good place to start "Seed" and "00" are also a good starting point. “Seed” is also my Gundam enlightenment. They both have their own timelines, so it's very easy to understand the story. They are not as profound as UC story, but more in pursuit of the emotional expression of the characters. If you prefer romance, there's nothing wrong with “Seed” as a starting point👍

1:01:25 this anime performed EXTREMELY well. The anime is about gunpla models, Gundam Plastic Models. Its not set in the gundam universe but sorta set in our world, cause you can buy gunpla kits in real life to build your favorite suit. In this series they have a system that allows them to move them and fight with them. This series did really well because it was a love letter to fans who both enjoyed gundam and building the model kits and really boosted it to another level, to a point where the gunpla series became its own thing aside from the gundam series. As you saw, Gundam Build Fighters started it all which was where they built their gunplas and played with them on these stages physically, then in Build Divers, it moved onto a digital setting where they upload their gunpla to a game, where they also have avatars and whatnot.

So at 23:26, that's Gundam ZZ ("Double Zeta"). It flies in two separate parts, the upper body, which I think is called the Wave Rider (the same as Zeta Gundam). The lower half is called a Nutter, if I remember right lol. Also, the "little ball thingy, with the ears!" is called a Haro. You can buy kits of them as well! There's even special edition ones. And your favorite (watching as I write) at 25:00 is Gundam Unicorn. That show gave us some of the nicest designs. Unicorn Gundam, Banshee Gundam, Phenex Gundam, Sinanju, Kshatriya... Some great choices. Even the Stark Jegan.

As a short spoilerless summary of the different universes/timelines: Everything from the start of the video until Victory: Main UC (Universal Century) Gundam timeline. There are even a couple things missing like War in the Pocket or F91, but that's because they were movies more than series. Mobile Fighter G Gundam: Gundam but genre shifted into a martial arts tournament anime. New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Famously the most recognized old Gundam west-side due to featuring in Toonami, as well as being well self-contained as a single series and a movie. Although the tone is serious, you can see some campiness in the concepts above UC Gundam norm. After War Gundam X: Considerably the underdog of early Gundam, run length cut down due to unpopularity at the time, but it was more a sign of trend shifting than actual issue with the series. ∀ Gundam: Yes, that's what the "Turn A" is. An oddball series, some may recommend watching it only after you're deep in the Gundam rabbithole, for reasons. It features an interesting setting clash between high-tech and 20th century times. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED/Destiny: Considerably the start of modern Gundam, specially marked for the use of digital coloring over traditional. Also considerably one of the most controversially received. Features many parallels with the first Gundam, and similarly does its sequel SEED Destiny with Zeta Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam 00: First Gundam to be animated in HD, to start its dub before the JP airing ended, and to have its run properly divided in seasons. Could be considered to follow a similar spirit to Wing, with its team of protagonists and the situation they're in. It even has a movie as well! Mobile Suit Gundam AGE: A series spanning a century, a lot is compressed to be told in a normal series runtime. It can be seen as a tribute to previous Gundam series in spirit. Gundam Build Fighters/Try/Divers/Re:RISE : A departure from the usual planetary conflict stories of the franchise, Build Fighters is more akin to a merch-based competition anime like Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Bakugan, etc. Alongside the new designs, it features many of the mobile suits from previous Gundam series, as well as new variations of them. Spot-on interpretations over the settings on these, btw. Gundam Reconguista in G: A return to more traditional Gundam storytelling, spiritually similar to Turn A Gundam. It is also the shortest 'real' Gundam series, discounting movies re-cut into series and the two Build series. Mobile Suit Gundam IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS: As noted, it is more aesthetically themed after medieval combat compared to other series' modern-to-space warfare. Competes for darkest themes with some of the UC Gundam entries. Of course, as mentioned before with UC there's still a good number of titles not represented here since they're in OVAs/movies/ONAs/etc. Along that, a good number of series also have compilation movies if you want shorter versions of the stories, though many tend to swear by just watching the original full series.

The little ball thing you were curious about is Haro, a robot that was invented by the protagonist of the 1979 anime when he was much younger. He later emds up getting quite a bit of royalty money when he lets the Haro get mass produced as a toy. The Haro robots (particularly ones owned by Universal Century Protagonists, that is, ones in the same coninuity as The Origin and the OG 1979 anime) start to have a habit of saving protagonists, sometimes unintentionally. Fron Zeta Gundam onwards, they also have the ability to upen up their "mouths" revealing that they double as a portable computer terminal.

So Gundam: The Origin was originally a modern manga retelling of the original series, but with some parts exploring the time before the start of the original 1979 anime thrown in. Then they made it into a movie series exploring the backstory of the main rival, Char Aznable. They then turned the movie series into a show. It's actually a great hopping-on point to get into the "main" timeline of the show, the Universal Century. And if you like series with political intrigue, Gundam is THE classic political anime. Ever since the very, very first one in 1979, there's so much political maneuvering, backstabbing, all sorts of crazy stuff. It was SOOOOO ahead of its time, and the story still holds up if you can get past the dated animation.
@astralman2 жыл бұрын
I'm struggling to understand what exactly you mean by "dated animation". There's been many shows that have come out since that don't look nearly as good. For context: The plot for the Mobile Suit Gundam series focuses on the war between either two or multiple factions. It started with the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime in 1979. It centers on the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, centered on the fictional era where humanity has reached space. To combat this war, they use piloted mechas called Mobile Suits that give them the edge on the battlefield, so not every mecha in the series is called Gundam. The titular Gundam mecha of the series, piloted by the protagonist, can be easily recognized with its humanoid appearance, its signature white, blue, and red coloring, and the V-shaped crest on the forehead. Typically, the antagonist forces use a one-eyed Cyclops mobile suit called Zakus. Since then every Mobile Suit Gundam anime throughout the years followed this center plot about conflict but with different concepts and storylines. There's even another Gundam spin-off series called The Gundam Build series where instead people use hobby model kits of any of the mechas in any Gundam anime called Gunpla, short for Gundam Plastic Models. They can build their own original Gunpla model, customize it and battle others or experience like how it is in the anime.

Yes, there's always relationships and romance in Gundam. For sure you will like the new Gundam Witch from Mercury as it's the easiest one to get into with no relation to the other series (other than it's themes). Also the series make the most money out of selling the plastic models.
@LostInfernoFireDragon24 күн бұрын
What's funny in the Gundam Build Fighters series is that there is a special particle that interacts with the plastic of the model kits, and they can pilot the kits that they built and the particles mimic the effects of thrusters, beam weapons and sabers, and other types of weapons along with movement.

That wasn't blood you saw. That was red paint cuz is was a mach battle to test the new orange mech called the Powered GM. The reason why Mikazuki (the kid) was over Orga's (dark dilf) shoulder is because pushing the Gundam Barbatos to it's limits took away his feeling in his right arm, leg, and eye. The only time he has full motor function is when he is hooked up to the Gundam again. The little ball is called a Haro, he appears in a lot of Gundam shows. He'a a mascot for the franchise.

G Gundam is fucking wild, it's so out of character for Gundam and yet it works flawlessly. It's like wacky, hammy, bombastic and basically anything from that show is a recurring meme in the community, but it's somehow executed so damn well. Also 08th MS Team is my personal favorite because the fact that it's all from the perspective of common soldiers and civilians makes the stakes feel much higher when there's danger. It's basically the vietnam war with mechs. And if you liked these I think you'd also love Macross. Much like Gundam, it's been around for many decades, has cool mecha, has romance in most of them, and is absolutely full of banger tunes. Difference is that while Gundam is (usually) more focused on politics and such, Macross always revolves around the music in one way or another, though the plot itself varies. It also basically made transforming robot planes two years before Transformers was made. Highly recommended.

What makes Gundams special is usually something that makes them "Alive" in one way or another. Sometimes it's literal like the WFM Gundams and numerous Newtype possessed suits. Other times it's figurative like the 72 devils of IBO- some of which make deals with their pilots. In a rare few cases, Gundams gain sentience like the RX-78-2 via A.I. learning. A lot of them are up to interpretation, but that is the general jist of it.

G Gundam is wild, you might actually like that one, it's one of the first alternate universe series they did, but it's completely off the rails in its premise which is essentially that the world's rich people all fucked off to space and left the poor people on earth. All the rich founded space colonies that are effectively just extensions of the original countries of earth. Every 10(?) years they hold a tournament, a martial arts tournament that incidentally wrecks everyone stuck on earth's shit, with Gundams. G Gundam was the first AU and they sure went all in on being an AU. A lot of people don't seem to like Gundam Age. I don't know what its popularity was like in Japan. I don't remember disliking it myself, and it has a multi-generational story (the green haired baby is in all four openings, at different stages of his life), which is something I really like in fiction! I have to rewatch it one of these days and see how it holds up. But anyway, that multiple generations aspect might be why it got so many openings, because the cast changed a lot.
@KingCasual198611 ай бұрын
My problem with AGE is that it never really committed to anything. Long story short, they should have honestly gone full on Victory with this show because as is, it’s passable at best. For the Flit arc, they should have leaned more into the devastation caused by the Vega when they were an unknown entity. For Asemu’s arc they should have done more with Asemu and Zeheart’s relationship, maybe have Zeheart defect and join Asemu when he became a pirate. As for Kio’s arc…Kio shouldn’t have had a full on arc. He should have been a secondary protagonist while the focus stayed on Flit and Asemu. It’s a moot point as this obviously didn’t happen but still, as is, AGE doesn’t know what it wants to be and I think it suffers because of it. It’s a shame that it came right after 00.

Okay, I know I'm commenting on an old video, but Gundam is a neat franchise with *a ton* going on under the hood, so here's some random notes as they pop into my head: Re: bleeding robots -- Gundam is a series, ultimately, about the atrocities of warfare, and uses the mobile suits to represent different aspects of that theme. Often, the mobile suits are representative of the pilots' bodies, and when that particular aspect is being pushed, you'll sometimes see red-brown oil or blood-red flames coming out of the suits when they sustain damage. In those cases, it isn't literally blood, it's just a visual representation. Other times, especially in later series, you'll see blood shooting out of the cockpit as a suit is crushed or stabbed. Those ones are just blood. The little ball thing is series mascot Haro. Re: little girl fighting in space -- the original 1979 series was very interested, thematically, in demonstrating that the old create wars and the young suffer in them. In fact... okay, look: Gundam's main canon is the Universal Century timeline, which started with the 1979 series depicting a bloody war between the Earth Federation and the space-colony-based Principality of Zeon. In first Gundam, Zeon is depicted as pretty blatantly villainous, starting the war by dropping a space colony on earth and killing something like half the population. Their uniforms and mech designs are heavily influenced by the Axis powers of WW2. Gundam's direct sequel, Zeta Gundam, has a lot more influences of the war in Vietnam, and the protagonists are a terrorist group fighting against the Earth Federation's tyrannical special division, The Titans. Gundam and Zeta have different main characters, but the big picture thing they have in common is that they are teenagers who wind up fighting against corrupt power systems driven by the Machiavellian power struggles of older generations (and in doing so, they suffer immense trauma and find themselves displaced by their experiences). Uhhh.... yeah, Victory Gundam is super happy. Don't watch it, just keep that ember of happiness alive in your heart. Re: 1992 and 1993 Gundam projects -- Victory Gundam was a mainline series taking place in the Universal Century, while G-Gundam was its own pro-wrestling fever dream taking place in its own unique timeline. Gundam Wing is singularly responsible for the spread of Gundam fandom into the west. It takes place in its own timeline, After Colony, and features a scene where two untrusting teenage terrorists establish trust in each other by playing classical instruments together. A note on Gundam Seed: Taking place in the Cosmic Era, Gundam Seed can be viewed as almost a remake of the original Gundam, but bringing more contemporary themes into the mix. Also, a lot of surprisingly gory deaths in this one -- they really cranked up the bodily harm for Seed. Gundam AGE: A pretty neat concept of "Hey look at this generational trauma" as the series documents different stages of the same war with arcs following three different pilots and taking place decades apart. Also, AGE resulted in some of the best and most consistent model kits Bandai ever turned out, at least until Witch from Mercury. Unfortunately, the show itself wasn't really that good. Re: You hate babies fighting -- Uhhhh don't watch IBO. I mean, don't watch any of them, but especially don't watch IBO. Gundam Build franchise: Yeah, it's a return to "blatant toy advertising" cartoons and it's weird as hell. There are two different Build timelines in which people build plastic model kits to accomplish their goals -- Build Fighters involves some weird technology where the actual plastic models animate and fight against one another, while Build Divers characters build models which they then scan and use in a giant video game. Bandai seems to be working on something like this in real life... Reconguista in G had some really unique mecha designs and that's all I can ever remember about it. Iron Blooded Orphans is, in my opinion, an incredible series in terms of both realizing its themes and in having really cool battles. Also, "the DILF" is like, an older teenager, but anime really do be that way sometimes. It takes place in its own timeline and has some genuinely rad mecha designs.
