Growing up in the 80s watching these games in real time was a great time

God I miss the nhl, nba, nfl when men had to be courageous and physical just to compete. Today the athletes are more like entertainers than gladiators. Bird played through pain and injuries and was definitely one of the best. Love and respect brothers, from hog fam Canada 🇨🇦

as a Knicks fan of the late 80s and ALL of the 90s and early 2000s, what I miss most is the intensity.. it wasnt always pretty basketball but they fought for every point and it was fun to watch. sometimes it was pretty.. sometimes it was a slugfest. some teams were big and posted up. some teams were small and ran. some teams shot a lot of perimeter shots. some teams were rugged and physical. variety is the 2nd thing i miss the most.

My favorite of all time was Wilt Chamberlain, when his games were televised my dad would let me watch after homework and chores were done. We lived in the stix had a dirt court and hoop on a telephone pole. Played with my two older brothers .love the sport then, physical team orientated power on the court .for me it was Chamberlain's physical ease playing and his effortless game made me try harder in mine...thank you GOD I got to watch it live ....I'll remember those days fondly. Glad you both enjoy real basketball. Enjoyed your reactions. Called it right.

Bird had called his teammates sissies because of the game they lost. Kevin taking out Kirt Rambis got into the heads of the Lakers and stopped them from wanting to try layups all night. Lakers stopped playing and started fighting and the Celtics had got into their heads.

What you miss about ML Carr's celebration after that steal was that the coach of the Lakers, Pat Riley, had dissed him earlier in the week as a towel waving bench player with a big mouth. To get the steal in that position right in front of Riley and put the game away was a direct reply to Riley without using his mouth or a towel.

That was game 4 of the 1984 NBA finals. The Lakers were up 2-1 and the Celtics won the game, tied the series and went on to win in 7 games. In this game Kareem led all scorers with 32 points and Bird had 29 points and 21 rebounds.

The previous game (game 3) at the forum the Lakers blew the Celtics apart by 33 points with their showtime offence. Larry made some comments after that game calling himself and his teammates sissys for letting the Lakers run them off the floor so that’s why the Celtics decided to up the physicality in this game 4. That’s also why they were so hyped after winning in OT, no one expected the Celtics to win that game in the Forum and they eventually won the series in 7!

Mchale accidentally hit kareem in the face, and kareem retaliated with an elbow that got bird.

I thought it “almost landed.” Years later Bird said that If that had landed, then [Bird] would still be unconscious.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

Larry Bird said that he would never back down, because if you did, people would look at you differently. In that game against the Lakers, once that disagreement between Bird and Kareem happened, the Lakers mindset was messed up. The Celtics did end up winning the series.

Not for nothing, but Larry absolutely threw his share of elbows. And punches. Larry was involved in more than one fistfight, several of which he started. Dude was always ready for some fisticuffs.

Real team basketball, not a slam dunk contest or a 3pt contest that today's game has devolved to. No one knows how to play anymore and it has made the NBA completely unwatchable for old school fans. Any one of the championship teams of the 80s would totally destroy the NBA teams of the league today.
