The incorrectly loaded film had a cool vibe to it, still. Could be used for filmic overlays in a sample pack or footage for a more avant guard video/music video/etc

Definitely agree, would be an absolute waste to throw them away.

I had a K3 back in the day when they were first being imported. It was like most Soviet items, built like a tank, almost indestructible, but not very precise, as you noted with film speed and there was a lot of gate weave. I used it on some corporate shoots exactly as you suggested, for random b-roll and textural elements, as we shot the actual project on video. They are interesting cameras but definitely with a lot of technical limitations. At the same time, I also owned an Arri SR2 HS modded camera that was the opposite of the K3, It had crystal sync, was quiet and precise, German engineered. But back in the day, really expensive, I think I paid $30k for the SR2 package. K3 is fun if you just want to doodle around and experiment with film. Too bad shooting film today costs a bloody fortune, I used to buy short ends, which were leftovers from high end productions that they would sell off. A good way to save money, but today, I doubt there are enough people shooting film on a regular basis for there to be much of short ends market?

At the pro level the budget fits the camera. At a non commercial level, where you shoot with intention, it's not that expensive. I have a Bolex H16, Sr2 (s16mm) and a K3 all in my bag. For 35mm motion picture I rent the cameras only when required (BL, LT etc). All the 16mm ones work in unique ways and don't break the budget. Just gotta shoot what you need. Rent when you can't afford to own imo

Also short ends are plentiful in 35mm. Rare and Not worth it in 16mm these days

Great video and results! Wondering what side handle grip you have on the k3?
@joshherumdp5 ай бұрын
So it just a Smallrig Rosette Handle. But the key is to find a base plate with 1/4 20 holes on the sides since there isn’t any mounting points on the camera. There isn’t that many that have that

Try k4 with hd tap and sync motor.

Very cool, thanks for sharing the experience. I got k3 through a friend in Thialand, as Im in Asia and he got it converted to super16, but not like your version where you can actually see, so I haven't yet shot with it. I will probably shoot centered subjects first on a test roll to see which side Im missing in the view finder, to better compose on actual shoots. I'm not pro or anything, just for fun. And I haven't yet used the light meter, so I'm still in the "scared" phase, I have black and white svema as test rolls. I do agree, K3 is known to cause loop issues, although you got loop formers removed, I got mine removed too, sounds like i'm talking about getting balls removed, but, no, it's like getting a surgery for the better, or film gets scratched. But I also do have Arri 16S, so send me some confidence to kill my fear and test the K3 with a light meter, so I can get the hurdle away, its been two years already. The mount I have is m42, so I dont mind it, since I might just use the old glass, especially Helios and other m42 photography lenses I have, but with softer glass, i'll have to nail the focus, or it will be shit. I don't mind not having crystal sync, as I like the fluctuated speed for short scenes and especially if im going to dub audio or at least, if I get a live recording, I can edit footage to sync. Speaking of sound, I would like to experiment recording sound on tape, as Digital for me just clashes with film, if not EQ'd properly. I mean, for digital to sound "correct" on film, I might have to lower the extreme high and low bars, so I have most of the middle section on the EQ, so its not too sharp and bassy, but I figured, tape sound would fit film better. Just more hassle, but it pays off. Lastly, the on screen text (Logos, Credits). I'm interested in shooting on film. There are filmstocks made for special effects and shooting cards with credits and I feel that shooting credits on film blends them to the world, they belong there and on screen digital text is like a sticker on a box, instead of the print.
