The breathiness is an artistic choice. Billie said in an interview that the song is meant to be breathy and intimate, like she's just been crying and this is all she has left.

in the beginning she starts singing while moving towards the mic, so maybe the sound of her vocalizing not so clear but as she is settled with the mic we hear every sound and intention and the feels... she always make me feel! love her! congrats Billie and Finneas!
