This is why Iron Golems are my favorite mob in Minecraft as they slowly toddle back and forth on the same routes around a village protecting everyone.

There's nothing wrong with watching the dubs of any of Miyazaki's movies. All of them are top notch. This is no exception. In fact, it's a fave of mine. I DID see the subbed version once, and though I liked it then, I prefer the dub, mainly because of the performances, but the rescored music by Joe Hisaishi himself (approved by Miyazaki) really adds to the picture.
@rabid_si
@rabid_si 8 ай бұрын
The rescore isn't bad, but I'm not a fan when put beside the original score. It loses a lot of the moments where silence is used to build tension or loneliness or a piece of orchestration highlights something else where the rescore just loses the musical cue in a sea of other cues.. The rescore is approved but is still very much a compromise as this was something requested by Disney to match "there should almost always be orchestration happening" Disney sensibilities. It's telling that outside of a few very early Disney releases of Ghibli works, changes are basically non-existent.

I must have had a different version when i was a kid cus there is dialogue missing i remember 8.40 the close up of the pirates shirt exploding i remember someone saying “ now ladies and gentlemen keep your eyes on the buttons” or when the car is on the railroad track after he says “id like to be in the car now mother” he then say “scary ride” or the ending “its a big stone” in my version after that someone says “ yes i can see that num skull but whats it doing thats my question” then dola says “that tree is getting away with our treasure”

Small note. The floating island of Laputa is actually one of the journeys of Gulliver, from Jonathan Swift's book. Pop culture mostly focuses on his journey to Lulliput, the land of the tiny people, but there are four journeys in all. Laputa was inhabited by people so engrossed in their own thoughts that they barely sensed the outside.

The film's unsung protagonist is Captain Dora, an all-around female pirate. According to Hayao Miyazaki, she is the future version of Sheeta. The proof is the young portrait of Dora on the left at around 27:50 in your video. In terms of character development, Dora can be said to be the person after Nausicaa grows up to become Kushana.

I had to get my eldest Nephew the original 1986 English dub on DVD for Christmas a few years back as Sheeta's constantly changing accent in the Disney dub drove him up the wall. Also on a flight, I saw a cloud formation that looked like the one Laputa was hiding in. I looked at my mum as we were both like "Laputa's over there!" It was not the best thing to say when on a plane full of Spanish people. We had a few looks over our way after that XD Also, It might not be classed as a "Ghibli" movie, but you need to see Miyazaki's first ever movie Castle of Cagliostro

I feel like they did a good job of using Joe Hisaishi to re-compose the score though. I remember the original dub of Kiki didn't even use some Hisaishi themes. I personally don't mind the added music because it allows me to enjoy more of the talented Hisaishi since so many of the other Ghibli films have drawn out scores. Sometimes I feel like the silence in the original was a bit too much. But I do think they needed to be more cautious with the casting lol.
@rabid_si
@rabid_si 8 ай бұрын
@@WesMinhOmura It isn't just added music, the entire score is redone. However, here's the rub. Aside from the fact that silence is used well in the original score (not everything needs to be scored constantly) and the fact that I personally don't think the rescored music is "bad" perse... it is very bland. The melodies remain (for the most part) intact but a lot of the interesting orchestration loses the score a lot of character. This is particularly obvious in the span that runs from the final descent through the dragon's nest to Laputa to the finale. The dragon's nest theme is pretty iconic and is completely gutted and replaced by a really generic orchestrated piece with no relation to the original piece. A lot of the Laputa specific pieces are heavy on the synth in the original score, which really adds to the character of Laputa as an alien and otherworldly place which gets contrasted by being pared right back to very simple piano and vocal choruses when dealing with its ruin and fall. In the rescore it's all just sweeping orchestral compositions, no real texture or character at all. There are several moments where the soundtrack (and at one point in the cloud entry sequence, pretty much ALL sound) just gets dropped out completely because Hisashi (and the sound designers) know how to use silence to enhance eeriness, or the loneliness of a dead city etc. One of my favourite parts of the original score is literally the fact that when they finally land, and the clouds roll back to reveal Laputa, the score is going from literal silence, to slowly building tension on lonely strings, to the swelling of the orchestra. It's a beautiful and emotional moment hamstrung by the rescores inability to just... not be there for more than a minute or two. Anyway, yeah. A lot of people will decry criticism of the rescore as nostalgia and purist contrarianism, but there's a lot of really good points to the criticism if you actually put the two side by side, even if YMMV. I can completely understand why people who (like me) grew up with the original iteration feel kinda tilted by the way the new score takes liberties with the tone of the movie.

this movie is amazing, it was my first experience of anime or just Japanese media.. but this is the first time I hear the english dub and sadly enough they didn't do it justice edit: the reason the pirate guys like her is because they are prakticly chileren, they've probs never interacted with a woman appart from their mom (also in the japanese version it's more just that they find her cute, but it doesn't come over in a pedo way as much xD)

I watch dub because I’m dyslexic and reading subtitles is difficult because they’re too fast. I have to focus really hard on the subs, but then it takes me out of the film. Even then, I will still miss much of the subs and have to constantly rewind or pause a ton. I wish more people would acknowledge that dub can make anime more accessible. I prefer the dub before they cut dialogue. I get why they did it, but I feel like it took away, mainly from Dola, character. This is absolutely one of my favorite Ghibli films, and so when I saw it in our cinema a few years ago, I was gutted. I know nearly every line in this film so I definitely noticed. Same thing goes with Kiki.

@@ravenm6443wait I am confused why were things taken out and what things were taken out?
@Turnajon
@Turnajon 9 ай бұрын
@@mrsfahrenheit Most of these were mostly throwaway lines, like Dola and her pirates having a bit more back-and-forth, Sheeta practicing to talk like a pirate ("Arrgh! Shiver me timbers" to which Dola replies, "Keep practicing.") I personally thought all these were hilarious and added to their characters. But many, many purists didn't feel the same way. They saw it as a case of "disrespecting Miyazaki's use of silence." I don't really agree with that, as I felt they added to the joy of the films, but probably because of this they were dialed out. Only lines I agree with being taken out are the ones in which Pazu and Sheeta comment on the obvious, but otherwise I loved a lot of those extra lines and I'd gladly have them back. The rerecorded score by Joe Hisaishi (which at least survived) is a bonus as well. I've always considered CASTLE IN THE SKY an excellent and frankly, underrated dub and I still do. It doesn't have to be a 1:1 copy to be enjoyable in its own right, and it still does tell the same story. Plus Miyazaki and Ghibli signed off on it, so as far as I'm concerned, claims that the dub is "unlistenable" or "insulting Miyazaki" just fall flat. Now if it were like WARRIORS OF THE WIND, on the other hand, the criticisms may be understandable, especially if it involved cutting footage, but Disney never did that.

'Studio Ghibli' in Japanese, is pronounced with a soft 'g', like in 'giraffe' - jib-lee. They got the arabic pronunciation wrong when they wrote the phonetics out in Japanese so the company name has never changed. FYI - as a bilingual, Laputa is one of the few Ghibli films which is dubbed very badly - they change some of the script regularly and even mash up the music score in the english version, giving a very different tone and atmosphere to key scenes of the original. They didn't do the film any justice with most of the voice actors either - it sounds so amateur and badly written that I can't sit through the whole english version. I highly recommend watching the subbed version for this Ghibli one (FYI subbed versions generally tend to respect the original better with any film).

Both versions of CASTLE IN THE SKY are enjoyable in their own right. Yes, the leads do sound a bit older in the Disney dub and the script a bit more liberal, but it's still far better made than the 80s dub from JAL. Also, sorry guys, but neither Miyazaki nor Ghibli think the currently existing dub is awful by any means. They had to approve of it. Otherwise it wouldn't get released. Now if you prefer the sub, fine. But that doesn't mean the dub is bad in any way. On the contrary.
