Desperado is the middle part of the “Mariachi Trilogy”. The first movie is “El Mariachi”, then “Desperado”, which is a sequel/reboot/remake of “El Mariachi”, and the last part is “Once Upon A Time in Mexico”. The original actor who played Mariachi first is in the movie playing as one of his “crazy” friends. He’s the one with the machine gun guitar cases.

I had just started playing guitar when I first seen this movie. I learned everything I could from this movie and the mariachi guitar style! I HAD to learn the lick he taught to the boy. Then later, more guitar goodness in Once Upon A Time In Mexico 👍

The music was done by Tito & Tarantula. The singer is the other henchman in the bar (the one that shoots at Tarantino), the whole band also appear in From Dusk Till Dawn, they are the band that plays at the Titty Twisters during the scene with Salma Hayek. ;)

Robert Rodriguez's directing of The Mandalorian episode shows when you watch this movie. The explosions, people flying around, the backwards jump while shooting... it's glorious.

The "Prequel" to this movie is "El Mariachi" (the two guys with the guitar cases that appear here to help the hero are a cameo from that one) - also pretty damned good and shot on a ridiculously low budget (it was, if I'm not mistaken, the movie that got Rodruigez noticed world wide). And there's a "making of" in which Mr. Rodruigez (I hope I spelled that right) explains to you in much detail how it was made and little tricks to make a low budget movie look more expensive. :) It's kinda like "Film hacks" and I came across film makers who recommend watching it a few times. Sounds like it's right up your alley. ;)

The soundtrack is so damn good. The band who sings many of the songs is Los Lobos who is also the band playing at Titty Twister in From Dusk till Dawn, the lead singer is also in this film as the guy working with Cheech in the bar.

The Codpiece Revolver, which is it's real name, started as a gag for Rodriguez. According to the story, he loved it so much, that he swore he would find a way to use it in a film. This movie, Desperado, is the first time it is seen onscreen. It would later show up in Machete Kills and the Dusk Till Dawn TV show where it was used by Jake Busey.

I'd recommend the little known early Robert Rodriguez film _Roadroacers_ It ticks every 50s bad boy b movie cliche, but is done with such incredible style you can forgive the plot you've seen many times before. Plus it has a young actress by the name of Salma Hayek. I could watch the scene of Salma playing with her hair in the mirror on repeat all day.

Awesome movie and such a big influence on my childhood and life in general. This and "El Mariachi" were a big part of my introduction into the art of filmmaking which lead to me reading "Rebel Without a Crew" by Rodriguez, a great book for any aspiring filmmaker or lover of film in general

I'm late to the party but this movie was totally awesome then and still is. I always tell the bar joke to friends at BBQs. One of the best part is after the shoot out at the bar, Antonio is getting chased by the dude with two handguns, that is the lead singer of Tito and Tarantula which song "Strange Face of Love" which is playing. The dude gets axed to his own song and are the same band in Dusk Til Dawn. That's epic. You should give a listen.

And this is why Antonio Banderas was the ultimate sex symbol of the 90s. The musical scene in the beginning is iconic. As for another spicy Antonio Banderas movie with a gorgeous, talented co-star, I'd suggest the Mask of Zorro. It was huge when it came out but has sadly mostly been forgotten since then.
