I’m old enough to have seen it in the theaters but honestly don’t remember if I did or not. I would have been like a freshman in HS. But maybe it’s because I’ve watched it so many times since then all my memories of it are blurred together. If I may be so bold, I would HIGHLY recommend watching it with the director commentary on. McTiernan did to action movie directing what Wells did to directing as a whole. For instance he describes how he went against the norm in one scene and kept the camera moving from one scene angle to the next to create a continuous sense of motion which was considered bad form for fear of making the audience sick. But he felt if done right it could create an intensity that would make it worthwhile. One of my fav commentaries of all time.

This was Alan Rickman's cinematic debut, and he crushed it. Fun fact, at the end, when he fell off the building, that face he made was genuine. He was in a harness of course, but the director told him they'd count to three, then drop him, instead, they dropped him on 1, so he made that face because he wasn't expecting it.

Also, the scene shot at a set platform and stood about 20 to 70 ft (reports were inconsistent about the actual number) and had a blue screen airbag. So while at least Rickman wasn't hurt, I'd still be swearing at John McTiernan for having me fall too early. They even made Rickman reshoot the scene again, as a backup, in case the studio didn't like the first take.

Ange... You did not realize that Alan Rickman was adorable!!! Okay, here's the skinny on it... This was Alan's first Hollywood movie. He had done some British TV, but this was his first film. He got it after being nominated for a Tony Award for a play called Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Alan was in his forties at the time, and his role was so impactful in this film that the character of Hans Gruber is probably among the top five all-time best screen villains. He commands the screen when he's on camera, and you think about him when he isn't. As for Bruce Willis...One of the greatest action heroes in film history started his superstar status with Die Hard and did several sequels. He was mainly known for a comedy-drama TV series in the 1980s called Moonlighting when he made Die Hard. Moonlighting was a HUGE hit and made him a star, but Die Hard made him a superstar. The Nakatomi building was still being built as the corporate headquarters for 20th Century Fox, so while it was still unfinished...they used it as the location for the movie, including many interiors. The studio was saved on a location (paying itself for the use of the area), and all damages were paid for by the box office returns on the movie, which were enormous ($140 million in initial release and number 10 for 1988's top box office hits). William Atherton, who played the asshat reporter Richard Thornberg, made a career of playing asshats...like the "dickless" Walter Peck in Ghostbusters. Alexander Godunov played Karl, aka "Goldilocks," who fights McClain hand to hand. Godunov was a Russian-born ballet dancer who was incredibly talented and popular. During the Cold War, he defected to the United States from the USSR. He only made three films, all of which received reactions, including The Money Pit with Tom Hanks and Witness with Harrison Ford. He never made it big in movies. Merry Christmas...It's officially the season because Hans has fallen from Nakatomi Plaza! One of my favorite Christams movies, and I was 16 when I saw this in the theater in 1988 (FOUR TIMES)! It was AWESOME!!!

21:20 - Also buildings can stand a pretty good blast, most of the damage isn't really the heat but the force of the explosion, the support beams that make up the structure of the building can withstand it. Remember on 9/11 it took quite a while for the building to come down even after a plane flew right through it at low altitude cruising speed. In the end it was the intense heat fueled by jet fuel and the material in the building that caused the structural beams to fail. However it can be said a lot of support beams are near the center of the building which is also where a lot of architects often put the elevator shafts, so it does stand to reason some structural damage occurred.

Die Hard changed the action movie game. Before this movie, action movies typically involved musclebound macho guys mindlessly shooting infinite ammo at an endless stream of henchmen. But Die Hard doesn't do that. John McClane is an everyman who has to outmaneuver the bad guys, keep count of how many of them there are, and scavenge for any weapons and ammo he can from the henchmen he takes out. It was such a fresh approach that it became the new template for Hollywood action movies - "Die Hard on a plane/bus/train/etc."
@NThurkettle
@NThurkettle Ай бұрын
This movie absolutely never misses, iconic moments every other minute. I used to work in that building IRL, when it was called Fox Plaza - the police dispatchers in the movie even give the correct address - 2121 Avenue of the Stars in Century City, right by the Fox Studio Lot. "Die Hard" set the tone for a bajillion copycats - so many movie villains were trying to be Hans Gruber, there were a string of action movies in the 90's about one outnumbered hero in a confined area. It was literally shorthand: "Die Hard on a train. Die Hard on a boat." But one of the biggest reasons the original endures is that there's nothing about violence or hostage-taking in the first 15 minutes, it's all about the damaged marriage and the hope for a Christmas reunion with the kids if Mom and Dad can just get over their ish.

I still remember seeing this with my Dad when it came out. Last year the original Die Hard screenwriter Steven E. de Souza reaffirmed that Die Hard is indeed a Christmas movie, comparing it with the 1954 musical comedy White Christmas. The fact is Die Hard takes place entirely during a Christmas party and only a small portion of White Christmas is actually during Christmas, Also White Christmas shockingly only has 2 Christmas songs. "White Christmas" and one called "Snow" However Die Hard has 4 Christmas songs: "Let it Snow, "Winter Wonderland, "Christmas in Hollis, and "Jingle Bells" There are various references to Christmas throughout the movie. For example: John put a Santa hat on a dead bad guy and added a very festive Ho! Ho! Ho! to his message on the sweater. Very Christmassy 🎄 😂

The building used to film this was the Fox headquarters building in L.A. it was under construction at the time, the explosions were done with models though Elis is an A Hole but the actor who plays the role does a masterful job Same for the actor Wiliam Atherton who plays the annoying reporter who is also in Die Hard 2, Ghost Busters and Oscar I was 11 when this came out, I saw it a few years later on VHS at home

You actually had a very similar reaction to people in the 80's recognizing Bruce Willis in this film from a TV show because at the time he was only really known for being in the TV Show Moonlighting. Lol, a lot of people were iffy on him especially because all action movie stars were these muscled up guys and Bruce Willis is very average by comparison, but he definitely changed people's perspective on what "Action Stars" looked like.

This is what Bruce Willis is best known for, but when the movie was being promoted people weren't sold on him as an action star because he was known for being a tv actor for a comedy series at the time, the tv actor/film actor stigma was still quite prominent but he proved them all wrong, and he did his own stunts. It was also Alan Rickman's movie debut, having only previously done tv and theater - his expression when he fell was legitimate too, since he was let go a second earlier than he was told he would.

Bruce Willis came to fame playing a detective on the romantic/comedy/mystery show "Moonlighting." The first couple of seasons are perfection before it goes off the rails. Because "Moonlighting" was so light hearted and comedy intense, people were skeptical that Bruce Willis could be an action star. He then became arguably the 3rd biggest action star of his time, after Arnold and Sly Stallone.

In 1988 it did not occur to any of us- not the writers, not the producers, not the director, not the actors, the audience, or the damn lawyers, the accountants, the caterers, the makeup artists or the key grips-that a skyscraper could just collapse into a pile because bombs went off in it. It’s not a thing we imagined was within the realm of the possible.

To a fair extent, it shouldn't be. To bring down a building with a single explosion, you have to severly compromise its structural integrity (and that mostly has to be done by destroying support columns). As long as you don't do that, and the building is well built in every other concept (so floors don't cave in), it can take quite some punishment and still stand. Of course, the other half of the concept is that the movie will never give an exact recipie to demolish a building.

Hi Ange! I hope you had a blast watching Die Hard. This isn’t just a Christmas classic, it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest action films ever made. It’s had such a huge cultural influence even to this day, even in ways you didn’t know before. It also helped launch the careers of its two leading actors. Your realization that Hans Gruber was played by Alan Rickman was so hilarious. It’s amazing to think that this was actually his first major studio role. Before this he was a veteran London stage actor who was unknown to American audiences, and he gives an absolutely iconic performance as Hans Gruber, who is still considered one of the greatest villains in cinema. While it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing that role, Sam Neill who is best remembered for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films was initially considered for the role of Hans Gruber. Die Hard not only redefined the action hero with Bruce Willis as John McClane, it revitalized the genre. The 1980s was defined by muscle-bound action heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Willis on the other hand portrayed a blue-collar everyday man who was vulnerable and fallible at times. Before this, he was best remembered for comedies and dramas such as Blind Date and ABC’s Moonlighting. Willis truly made John McClane an iconic anti-hero. Other actors who were initially considered for the role were Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Burt Reynolds, and Richard Gere. For Hans Gruber’s climatic death scene, Alan Rickman was rigged to be dropped backwards onto a blue crash mat on the count of three. The stunt coordinator instead devised a plan to have Rickman dropped on the one count in order to provoke the genuine reaction of shock you see his face in the film. While directing Die Hard, John McTiernan used extra loud blanks that gave the guns a more realistic sound and feel when fired, but there was no protection for the actors' ears. During the filming of the “No more table” scene, Bruce Willis was firing the gun so close to his head he ended up suffering permanent hearing loss in his left ear. Thank you for your hilarious and lovable reactions Ange. If you haven’t seen them I would definitely recommend Predator, Robocop, First Blood, Commando, Escape from New York, Bloodsport, The Warriors, The Abyss (special edition), Total Recall, Speed, Demolition Man, The Fugitive, Air Force One, Starship Troopers, Blade, Gladiator, and Dredd. Take care!

Literally the best action movie experience I've ever had, to this day. The 80s were truly the golden age of action movies.
