Comedy exists to mirror back to ourselves the truth about just how ridiculous we are. What makes comedy funny is that it relates to us the needless shame and embarrassment we hide from the rest of the world. As a species, we are the most entertaining creatures on the planet. Comedy, helps us to point the finger back at ourselves and laugh about it. Comedy is the penicillin of a sick soul, and reminds us are all in this together.

Don Rickles could roast audience members because at every show he spent 15-30 min talking about why humor is so important to us all. We could laugh at each other & no one is offended. & Those roasted found their dinner & hotel paid by Mr Rickles. (In other cultures: Italian/French & more, men being close/kissing, is common & not sexual.)

It's hard for young people to get his jokes because he made fun of major stars who were popular in the 60's , 70's and 80's . He made fun of the most popular actors and politicians. So that's why if you are young you might not get some of his jokes. He was one of a kind with the kind of comedy / insults he threw out there. But make no mistake he loved every single person he made fun of and they loved him because he made a point of being human at the end of his act and said publicly how much he cared for that person or persons.

The guy he was kissing is Frank Sinatra. One of the greatest singers of his time. It's widely believed Frank had very high connections to the mob, so if you looked back at some of his jokes, they contained fear from the mob. Maybe that's why some of the kisses? Or the fact that Italians greet each other with kisses on the cheek. Don went straight for the lips. 🤣🤣

I think the Mafia had a practice called the Kiss of Death, which they got from the Bible. Judas kissed Jesus and that was the signal for the Romans to take him away. I think to the Mafia, that's a signal of assassination. Sinatra went to Europe with Rickles with their wives, and Rickles kept making kissing sounds while Sinatra speedwalked.

You know how to pick the greats Silas! Yeah, Don was from another place and time, but he always preached that we have to be able to laugh at ourselves. He was right. All we're doing today is suppressing things that should be said openly and discussed. It just builds more resentment not doing it. The thing with Don is you have to know a lot about his era to understand much of it. He was hilarious and ironically, it was common knowledge that he was actually a very sweet man family man.

Just so you better understand the context, people, and references in this... -- The little kid who introduced Don Rickles was Webster, a pint-size child actor who had his own TV sitcom ("Webster"). -- The Rev. Billy Graham was a pre-eminent Christian leader and evangelist. Don mentioning that his hand was bothering him alluded to Billy being known as a monumental prayer warrior, even at times calling on God to miraculously heal people's infirmities. -- Actor Charlton Heston starred as Moses in the movie "The Ten Commandments," a blockbuster film for its time. -- Late night talk show host Johnny Carson was married three times, I believe all to women named Joanna... so that made Don's burn about "a couple of warmups" all the more perfect. -- Frank Sinatra was a smooth, popular singer who was part of what was known as "The Rat Pack," which included a number of singers and actors such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. (both on the dias that night) and others. Frank was reputed to have mob connections, so if you crossed him, you might be risking retribution. Only Don could get away with roasting Frank and everybody else. It wasn't that Rickles had no filter. His burns were purposeful for the comedy and even-handedly applied across a spectrum that might include hilarious cracks about such things as a person's purported skills, intelligence, or fame; their behavior; looks; race; religion... you name it. No one was safe from his jokes. It didn't matter if you were President or held other public office; a popular and extremely talented singer; a fellow comedian; a host; a star of stage, screen, or television; young or old; of particular physical appearance; a friend; someone's wife or husband; or a member of the audience. It was always rapid-fire and in front of that person or the one directly related to that person... and was always for his comedy shtick, not an attack ever intended personally or maliciously. Don didn't have a malicious bone in his body.

@2:06 -- Webster. He had a hit television series. @2:44 -- Secretary Shultz. -- Secretary of Labor, in the Nixon administration. -- Secretary of State, in the Reagan administration. @3:02 -- Billy Graham. Famous minister. Hence, Rickles' "heal my hand" joke. @3:16 -- Charlton Heston. Stared in numerous top rated movies. Many rate his performance in "The Ten Commandments" to be his best performance of all time, where he played Moses. Also, "The Ten Commandments" is ranked as one of the best movies of all time. It was released in 1956, and is aired annually during the Jewish "Passover" holiday. Hence, the "Moses" joke. His jokes lose their meaning, when you do not know the person that he is insulting. That compilation of Rickles covers, perhaps, 1% of his greatest insults. What made Rickles such a hit, was not only his hilarious lines, but also his timing. His timing was impeccable, and his timing was lightning fast. You got a taste of it @16:43, when it took him zero seconds to slap Julia Roberts. When you spoke up to Rickles, you got destroyed. Rickles also knew exactly when it was best to wait. Rickles was at his best when someone took a shot back at him. Alas, few people did, because they knew that they would be destroyed. But always in fun. As to Rickles not having a filter... he absolutely did. He was always clean. He never used foul language. He never made it personal in a mean way. To folks that were born in the last 20 years, it might seem like he has no filter. That is because in the last 5 to 10 years, the "everything offends me" woke folks have been trying to censor everything and cancel everyone, for even a hint of a taboo word -- and the words keep changing, to cancel more people. Cancel culture is their bible. So today, the world is being deprived of such amazing talent, from people we will never know, because they were never allowed to become popular. Comedians back then were not condemned and canceled for such jokes. And as you can see, people were free to laugh at each other back then.

2:03 CONTEXT: Emmanuel Lewis, star of Webster, was funniest single digit aged kin between 1983 & 1987 so funny kid telling insult comedian "be funny" insinuates he USUALLY ISN'T FUNNY... Be sure, it was scripted. Likely Don Rickles wrote it. And even if he hadn't, he at least agreed to the insult because he would have been justified to walk off stage leaving a 10-15 minute hole in live show

If you were a celebrity and Don Rickles roasted you, or made you the butt of his joke.. YOU MADE IT! You were in the big time. There was ONLY one celebrity that ever intimidated Don Rickles... and that was Howard Stern. The first time Rickles was on the Stern Show, he didn't roast Howard or anyone else. Howard was upset about that and found out that Rickles was afraid of how Howard's audience would react to it. (This was around the time Howard''s fans were making Chevy Chase's life a living hell)... The next time Don was on the Stern Show, he ripped Howard apart!

Silas Bailey - I am so glad you watched this and enjoyed it. I saw Don Rickles three years to the day before he died. I was sitting in my chair next to two gentlemen originally from Australia. They turned out to be a gay married couple, and seeing Don was on their bucket list. When some of the audience seemed a little more uptight about some jokes, these two guys were laughing the loudest. I'm glad I got to see Mr. Rickles in person. The one thing he asked his fellow younger performers was, "keep my name alive". When younger people like yourself watch these and enjoy these videos as much as you did and you understand he wasn't out to hurt anyone, you're doing exactly what Mr. Rickles wanted - keeping his name alive.

Don Rickles instituted a brand new era of public awareness. He taught us how to identify the free-roaming hockey pucks that screw things up. "My hand is bothering me," to Billy Graham: Graham was a famous TV evangelist & Don implied that he wanted some faith healing. "If you were Moses then I was a mau-mau pilot,: to Charlton Heston, the actor that *did* play the role of Moses in a movie. He was also in quite a few movies & even more in TV shows. If you want to see Don Rickles become a Jewish vampire, Innocent Blood is a good one; yes, it's meant to be a comedy.

I'll answer some things you need to know by watching this video, and ignorance is okay. This stuff is way before your time anyhow, but he's a funny ass motherfucker. 2:13 You were probably laughing because his look was "Who does he think he is??" 3:02 Billy Graham was a famous evangelist. Rickles was asking him on national television to heal his hand cuz he's fucking nuts. XD 3:16 Charlton Heston was a famous Hollywood actor. He played Moses in The Ten Commandments in 1956. "If you was Moses, I was a Mao Mao fighter pilot!" Its the same as the expression, "If _________, then I'm a monkey's uncle!" It just means If this happened, then the impossible is true. Mao Mao references Chairman Mao's rule over China. He was a "communist" dictator. Mao Mao fighter pilot to him either sounded funny or he was saying communism doesn't work. Mao Mao fighter pilot sounding funny is basically like saying, "If John's a senator, I'm a purple teletubby marine colonel!" 7:50 Unfortunately this is badly put together. This whole video is a compilation from the One Night Only tribute they made to Don Rickles and his career, so I guess in these videos, they had a formula that you need something crazy in at least some of them. This was the Dean Martin Roast where they roasted Telly Savalas as Man of the Week, and I am guessing this clip here was out of context. 9:57 Idk if you got this but I suspect something happened backstage or in studio where Carson turned his real self on because there were no cameras, and started getting moody. Johnny Carson was probably the most famous television personality back then, but he was also a narcissist, but he portrayed himself as a very charming likeable gentleman. So Don Rickles, being friends with him before he took this show for 40 years, was able to rib him that way, and he could get away with it cuz he was Don Rickles. Carson had immense respect for Mr. Rickles. 12:14 This starts the Frank Sinatra compilation, and this is important to know, that Sinatra was a man who had the Italian Mafia help him go up the ladder of fame in his career. He was around them all his life. He admired them where you can even see the respect he had for them by his gangster poses in movies. He fought these allegations all his life, but there's too much evidence now. He also had Mafia cronies as bodyguards wherever he went. He was also a man with an enormous temper, was bipolar, and had a big ego. People were afraid of him. Example of a story: early in his career, he had to work with another man of similar arrogance, Buddy Rich. The two did not get along. Sinatra ended up throwing a pitcher of water at him but he was able to dodge it. Buddy Rich ends up on the newspapers beaten to a bloody pulp by a mysterious man he never got the identity of. Don Rickles was great friends with Sinatra, where Rickles had liberty to wipe the floor with him. This is what made everyone laugh it up so hard, cuz he made everyone nervous and was crazy as hell. 13:50 Frank Sinatra was afraid of what was called The Kiss of Death. The Mafia got that from Judas from the Bible when he kissed Jesus which was to signal the Roman soldiers to take him away. Don Rickles went on a trip to Europe with Sinatra and their wives. When they would go out shopping, Sinatra would speedwalk away from Rickles making the kissy noises lol. 17:10 All this is out of context. Letterman brought this to the tribute, as Don Rickles coining phrases. A lot of it would make sense if we saw what some of the phrases meant. The "I think I can get to that tree!" was him making fun of Rupert Murdoch being Australian, who Letterman brought up.

Man... You missed a bunch. Some good jokes were lost in their historical context. Wait till you get old and someone asks you... Arnold? Who's Arnold Schwarzenegger? Some famous actors were trampled in these videos Hehehe .. For example Frank Sinatra (oh my God if you don't know who he is we need to talk). 😅 He is Italian and Italian men kiss. Frank had the bad rap of being a don in the Mafia. Ask about the kiss of death. If you are a don and you were being targeted for an execution that person was as good as dead by that kiss. Anyway.. that is just a little example. Try to dig into the names of the people he insulted. They were legends in their time. Get to know them. Is our culture. 😊 By the way. You look and act a lot like me when i was your age. 😅

12:40 Frank Sinatra, the famous singer on the right, was often accused of having ties to the Mafia. Even though he denied it, the belief that he was tied to the Mafia endures to this day. In this bit, Don Rickles is making fun of this by pretending to give Frank an "update" on which of his friends has been "hurt" and which of his friends has been "killed." He does this by making up nonsense names that sound Italian but also sound silly -- like "Marco Marcananzo". It is amazing that Sinatra was able to laugh through this because he really hated the fact that people thought he had ties to the Mafia. The repeated kisses ties into this as well -- mimicking the kiss between Michael and Fredo in the Godfather Part II -- a kiss of death.
