Just to answer how the Fantastic Beats relate, Fantastic Beasts was a textbook that was used in Harry Potter's classes. A literal encyclopedia of all the beasts in the magical world. Newt Scamander is the author. 😊

"Non main character, main character" is the PERFECT way to describe Newt in this
@leandrojimenez106 ай бұрын
Newt is an unconventional main character. It was a delight to watch, especially since most main character share the same personality/characteristics to some degree. It was refreshing to see this take on a main character; one that is peculiar in all the best possible ways. He is good example of characters that get overlooked because they don't fit the mold of the traditional "leading man". He is an eccentric character, who believes in doing the right thing, he is honest to a fault, extremely loyal to his friends and very passionate about his craft. A Hufflepuff through and through.

@@RoadieDoh I think most people would agree that side characters carry films. They help move the story along and they often help the main characters evolve. Newt is kind of like, a Hagrid from 100 years ago. He sees the beauty in all beasts, no matter what they look like or what they do. He protects them because they are animals, and their actions hold no positive or negative intent - they are innocent creatures. He connects more easily with animals because he understands them - humans are the bigger mystery to him. When you would find a Graphorn disgusting (19:10), Newt knows they are gentle and sweet creatures that happen to look slightly scary to people.

Fun Fact: Eddie Redmayne has said in interviews that he specifically played Newt Scamander as someone on the Autism spectrum. Newt is at this time (1926) traveling to Arizona to take Frank (the large eagle-like creature, which is actually a thunderbird) back to its native habitat. Newt has on his own become the world's authority on magical beasts, which at this time are not appreciated even by the Wizarding World (it's possible wizards and witches the world over see magical creatures as potentially revealing the existence of magic and wizards/witches, and so are a threat to magical communities). Newt has just finished his manuscript for his first book, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", which will go on to change the minds of magical communities and magical governments. The book will also become a standard textbook in schools of magic, such as Hogwarts. The goblin speakeasy owner, Gnarlack, is played by Ron Perlman, who also played Hellboy. Mary Lou Barebones is played by Samantha Morton, who also played Agatha (the 'most talented' precog) in "Minority Report" and Alpha in "The Walking Dead". When he was Mr Graves, he was played by Colin Farrell (the FBI agent in 2002's "Minority Report", the starring role in 2012's "Total Recall", and the Penguin in 2022's "The Batman"). When he is revealed as Mr Grindelwald, he's played by Johnny Depp. Yes, the little scrap escaping the subway IS Credence. Deeper into the Fantastic Beasts trilogy, you'll find out who Credence really is. And, again, Frank is a thunderbird. Native Americans have been speaking of them for thousands of years. Thunderbirds live in the arid areas of the US Southwest; they cause violent thunderstorms which bring much needed rain to those desert places. Leta Lestrange is an ancestor of Rodolpho Lestrange, who marries Bellatrix Black. Leta and Bellatrix are more closely related by marriage than by blood. I see Credence as vulnerable while also being powerful. He grew up, like Harry Potter, as being unloved, being resented, and treated as an aberration. His instincts were to use magic, which for him was a natural expression of his abilities. But Barebones beat him for that; she beat him to correct his 'sinful' nature. Barebones KNEW Credence's birth mother was a witch, and she thought she could beat the 'sin' out of him. By beating him into suppressing his magical ability, he developed an obscurus. People who are forced to suppress their true nature will suffer for it. The suppressed natural feelings and actions in a way rots in them; it's psychologically unhealthy. They aren't 'evil', just damaged as people. Credence wasn't 'evil', he was just young, desperate for love and approval, suffering, and easy prey for exploitation. Newt is on the autism spectrum. He expresses a lot of the characteristics of many (not all) people on the spectrum. He has a sharp focus (almost obsession) on his primary interest (magical creatures), he has difficulty looking directly into people's eyes, he doesn't seem to like physical touch or affection, he's very intelligent, and he has difficulty telling lies. A lot of people on the spectrum have difficulty navigating social cues and customs, and they enjoy the company of animals more than people. I think Eddie Redmayne did an excellent job portraying this character. The Fantastic Beasts franchise goes downhill for two reasons: -Johnny Depp gets kicked off the production by the end of the second film because of bad press from his woman filing a lawsuit on him (turns out she was a 'little' crazy, and he lost a LOT of work). -Between the writing and the production, the story got hard to follow. It's still worth watching for the history; it bears on Harry Potter in several ways. The first film is worth watching, and once watched you need to watch the other two films, just to answer certain questions.

As an autistic person I loved how Eddie Redmayne portrayed Newt. It’s not often that a non autistic actor can do this both accurately and respectfully, and doesn’t centre the entire character around having autism.

My biggest hot take about those movies is that Mads Mikkelsen was a better Grindelwald than Johnny Depp. I'm not saying that Johnny Depp deserved to be fired (especially considering that WB kept Amber Heard in the DCEU). What I'm saying is that Mads Mikkelsen should have been Grindelwald from the beginning, because he fits the character more. Also let's not forget about another one of WB's biggest headaches, named Ezra Miller.

Adison not being out-done in the humour stakes! This is one of the few films that places an introvert as its main character *and* its antagonist (secondary antagonist anyway). Many people struggled connecting with Newt, but for introverts - if I may presume to speak for us - he is a delightful, heartwarming character. I was really glad to hear Adison say he wants to get to know him further. He even got a Big Daddy rating! xD I'm only saying this so you can brace yourselves, but it takes a proper dip from here and I was very disappointed for it. Anyway, I think this is my favourite reaction of yours!

I always found Newt to be sweet and charming. And after reading an interview where Eddie Redmayne said he played Newt as 'on the [autism] spectrum', I am especially impressed with the nuanced performance. In spite of the seeming standoffishness, there were several instances where Redmayne showed Newt's warmth and affection while maintaining the character's need for space.

And I love the economy of having a 'thing' inside a 'thing'. Newt's suitcase has a small room in it; in the Potter films you got larger volumes in the tents and even in Hermione's purse. But THEN, the various habitats are set into canvases hung from the crown molding; they're like the living portraits at Hogwarts except that there is free passage in and out of them. All the other 'Tardos'-like hidden volumes are single additions; Newt's suitcase has the option of add-ons to expand the volume as needed.

@chris...94977 ай бұрын
Just to be clear, they probably have some minimal DNA in common. Purebloods tend to restrict their sexual partners, in or outside marriage, to other purebloods. Magical communities worldwide are a very small minority, and there have always been purists trying to keep magic in wizarding hands. This has led to cousins marrying cousins, uncles and aunts marrying nieces and nephews, and the like. Many pureblood parents are related by more than one near relative. Estimation is that actual purebloods make up only 25% of the Wizarding World population; at least 50% are half-blood and another 25% are muggle-born who display 'spontaneous' magic ability (of which at least some may be the result of wizards/witches who hid their magical ancestry or abilities). Keep in mind that some in that 25% who claim to be pureblood lie about actually being half-blood or having muggle ancestry. Umbrage is half-blood (muggle mother) but claims to be pureblood. The biggest problem for the Wizarding World is that the mania about pureblood status leads to inbreeding problems; mental aberration is more prominent in pureblood families, which is further compounded by magical power.

You clearly have no idea that many women would be attracted to Jacob. Queenie is not seeing Jacob as superficially as you are. She sees the attractively awesome man he truly is. This story takes place in the wizarding world but it is before Harry Potter's time. HP is a kind of "coming of age" story. Fantastic Beasts is aimed at a more mature audience (which may be why many HP fans didn't care for this series). Harry is a complex character but Newt is a much more complex character than Harry. They both move their stories, are at the center of what happens. Maybe it's because I came to HP as an adult and did not grow up with that series. Jo Rowling's writing is rich and she was more involved with the making of this series than she was with the HP movies, making these movies richer and more developed for me -- like the HP books but not in the HP movies (which took out the depth the books offered). For whatever reason, I find Fantastic Beasts a better movie series and more adult. It might help your appreciation to have read the HP books and paid attention to the minor characters referenced therein. We're seeing development of Dumbledore's back story -- as well as Grindewald's and Alberforth's and others -- which is introduced in the HP books but barely hinted at in the movies. Perhaps that's why I love all three FB movies thus far and hope they continue with more. We also get to see the wizarding world outside of England. We have only the movies because. although one of Harry's textbooks has this title, the stories of this series were never books. If they don't continue the movies, I hope Jo Rowling writes the books. She told us she was finished with Harry Potter's story but I don't think she said she would not visit the wizarding world again in her writing.
