Masterfully made tv, no denying it. The characters, dialogue, and delivery are at master craftsmen level. I can imagine that this episode in particular is one of the favourites for the cast and crew. It goes from the crew bonding and having a genuinely good time to shock and growing dread over their situation, to the mixed emotions of survival and almost certain death, and back to an even deeper love for each other at the end (Jayne is probably the only one who didn’t go too deep into his feels, maybe River, too). All along with Mal being what everyone needed; a paternal, supportive but firm figure for Kaylee, a wake-up call for Wash, a calm and decisive leader for the crew and passengers, he also had his own mortality to face on the ship alone, then back to hope, and then back to despair at being shot. Through it all he grit his teeth and gained a step at a time. It was even great that they incapacitated Zoe; that was extremely clever, as she would never have agreed to leaving Mal’s side. It meant that they could show Mal’s struggle was so great that he could do everything required but the callback button was just too far to be reachable. It would have been too easy for him to just hit that button and call everyone back. The realisation we get that he’d been saved through the luck of Zoe coming out of her coma is a great ‘ohhh’ moment. And yes, Mal’s groggy “Y’all gonna be here when I wake up?” (he could easily have thought he was delusional in his blood loss), responded to by Shepherd’s rich basso “We’ll be here.” along with that reassuring firm touch and warm smile. Just brilliantly done.

I am here early enough to be the first person to say it! After the show was canceled, Whedon promised the crew he would do everything he could to get them back up and running again if they would be willing to come back. On the last day, Alan Tudyk went to the prop room and got the big red button to hold on to. When Whedon let them all know there was a SLIM possibility that they might get to do a movie and wanted to know if they would be interested in signing on, Tudyk sent him the Big Red Button along with a note that said, "When your miracle gets here, just press this and it will call us all back home." 💓💓💓

"Y'all gonna be here when I wake up?" is such a darkly haunting and beautiful line. He fears he never made it to the button, no one came back, and he's simply imagining a 'happy ending' while he continues to bleed and suffocate unconsciously.

Something that gets overlooked is how everyone's "goodbye" scene reflects their personality as a character. Inara pleads with him to reconsider his decision. Walsh wants to say something thoughtful but doesn't know what to say. Jayne doesn't show any emotion. Zoe refuses to say goodbye. Even in her condition she made them go back for Mal.

The part that broke down was the same part that Kaylee has mentioned needing to be replaced before, once all the way back in the pilot episode. The spot where Zoe noticed something "disgusting" on the floor in the flashback is the exact spot where the bleeding Mal is lying in the present.

There are no not-great episodes of Firefly. This episode is perfectly placed within the other episodes, where we know the characters just well enough at this point that the extra bits of info given here really build upon the models of the characters in our minds. Each character gets emphasized in just the most perfect ways - this episode is just so well crafted.

It's really easy to use the non-liner story telling badly but in this case it was perfect. The reason was driven by the story. It's about a guy who is pretty sure he's going to die and as he passes through the ship, Serenity is reminding him why he should just take one more step. They keep coming back to this theme. (((Possible mild spoiler below))) Tracey : When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl - when you can't do that... Zoë : You find someone to carry you.

Masterclass of writing, editing and acting. Hands down one of the best episodes of any TV show! I love the ending; after taking you through all the crew (that we've not seen join) turns on a dime to being Serenity's origin story. The episode name it's self is amazing 'gas' is the one thing that ship and crew need to be alive... Without it it's just the cold blue void that exists and where this episode starts. This show was truly alive with the simple thing of a humming ship and her crew round a table.

This is the single best episode of a series I have ever seen. The blending of the three timelines was genius. Each story alone might have been a bit slow, but by feeding you the CliffNotes version of each, Whedon was able to focus on the highest points from beginning to end. The transitions from one timeline to the next were flawless, and I never felt confused about which one I was experiencing.

"We all die alone.." That lines breaks me every time. For a character that is so 'on the surface' for most of his time in the show, it's those odd moments of introspection that really hit home. That line right there, is why I feel Mal's character is so distant to the Shepherd's.. I imagine Book's insight would be rather opposite.
@Skye_Writer

Btw, the reason the progression seems/feels slow is because Whedon had a 7 year plan for the show. Episodic television was very different from the way a streaming/limited series is constructed these days. Back then, it was very "story of the week" with just little bits revealed from show to show. What's going on with River, why the government wants her, who the Reavers are and how they got that way--even seeing more of the Reavers to make them a bigger threat--that was all going to be teased out over 5 to 7 seasons. In the end, Joss had to put it all in the movie. Other things he planned to explore, like the pasts of some of the characters, had to be shelved altogether and explored through things like the graphic novels, sadly.

Yeah, Whedon more or less invented the "Big Bad" of a Season and Buffy is even credited for that word. All these years later, the 'genius' at Fox - Gail Berman - who cancelled "Firefly," has to wonder from time to time, not only about how many Brown Coats she permanently pissed off, but also how much $$$ she cost Fox. If the show had been properly promoted, with the episodes airing in the right order, and not given the "death" slot of Friday nights, and not being preempted three times, it would have found it's audience and it would have lasted a minimum of 5 seasons. It would also have netted the network millions of $$$ in sponsorship and merchandising. This has to be one of the worst decisions that any network executive ever made. Fox let it die, but none of the fans ever will !!!!!!!!

Makes me wonder how the person that cancelled it ever got a job in the industry in the first place? I don't care who you are, there isn't a bad episode in the bunch. Even if they only saw one ep, you might not understand the 'verse, but the stories are engaging and the people are likeable. More than practically any other first show I've ever seen. Personally, I suspect it was a combo of a mixed race couple, a promiscuous female mechanic, AND the most "respected" person was a prostitute, was too much for some prudish person in the process. :)

@@CanadianAmerican About the only explanation that makes sense to me is some Fox suit(s) just took a dislike to it. They obviously did all they could to wreck it from the start. All the scheduling changes and out of sequence episodes. For me, I think the only thing that makes sense is they thought a mixed race couple, the most respectable person onboard is a hooker, and the "sweetest" person is promiscuous, was just too much. Hard to understand from the studio that built their rep on Married with Children. But it's the closest explanation that makes sense to me, as I haven't heard anyone even dislike an episode. Maybe there is a hint in the two eps they never aired? Heart of Gold and Objects in Space. Shooting the "dad" at the end was pretty hard core, and "Jubal Early" casually threatening to r%$e Kaylee if she doesn't behave is also pretty hardcore for tv.

I don't want to anger any "Buffy" or "Angel" fans, but "Firefly" is the show that should have remained on-air the longest. "Buffy" seems to be geared more towards a younger audience - teens and 20 somethings. "Firefly," on the other hand, is clearly geared towards a much wider age demographic. There has never been a show like "Firefly" and there probably never will be. I suppose we all just have to accept the reality that the 14 episodes and "Serenity" movie will have to be enough.

@@CanadianAmerican Dont think Buffy Fans would mind that opinion. Cause its true. The overarching theme of Buffy is growing up and all the difficulties that come with it. The overarching theme of Angel is being an adult and dealing with the consequences you made in your live. Sadly Firefly never got the chance to really show what the theme here wouldve been. As far as I can say, its Family and what we are willing to do for them... And yeah, if FOX had done it right, who knows. Maybe we wouldve seen 10+ seasons... But still. I watched Buffy when I was "coming of age" and watch it every year since then. So if you are nearly 40 and watch it for the 1st time... yeah, probably not the show for you. But if you are a teen or early 20's and watch it... even today it might change your live! And dont forget all the Milestones this show gave us, that changed the way TV Shows operate today. Here are just a view from the top of my head. 1st Season long main villan (Big Bad) 1st Gay kiss in US TV history (Season 5) 1st Musical episode (Season 6) I am sure I miss a lot. When Mal sent the shuttles off, he had the duties split. It also allowed the air supply on Serenity to accommodate him longer before he reached critical thresholds in respiration. The salvagers did not engage in gun play because they could literally sit back until the scanners confirmed Mal had died of asphyxiation, hypothermia, or blood loss. Then they could legally come back and claim salvage rights.

It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity. According to some, every crew member is said to represent an aspect of Mal. Some fans feel Serenity is the tenth member of the crew (inability to settle under Alliance rule. Desire to wander). Aspects of Mal: Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case) Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew) Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime. River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war) Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking.

This one is my favorite of all the episodes. Not only was it masterfully and suspensefully written, but we get the back stories of all the people on the crew that we hadn't learned before. When they took on passengers in the first episode, we got backstories on them, to a degree. And Mal talked a bit about his past growing up on a farm, being raised by his mother and a bunch of cowboys, back when Safron was introduced (Our Mrs. Reynolds). But the existing crew, we hadn't learned their backstories before this. I just found this to be a masterful use of back flashes woven in with a gripping tale of struggle. We learned so much about everyone in this one.

I do love a good firefly reaction, seeing people become browncoats in real time is a real treat. Enjoying your reactions a great deal. This episode is my fav as it encapsulates what I love most about the show and you hit upon it as well in your review. You don't need every episode to follow a linear story, episodes like this add another layer to each character just by showing how they came to be in the crew....add that to what we have seen to loved/learned about them so far and you connect with them even deeper. Other series take 30+ episodes to develop the sort of connection you have with this crew within 3 or 4 and it only gets deeper the more you learn. Just always a shame that it was cut short due to Fox treating it so badly but the Movie is amazing. I'm really on the fence about Firefly remake.....on the one hand absolutely will watch it but I'm getting Disney star wars vibes and walked away disappointed with those but not so much that they sullied what I loved about the originals.....might be best I can hope for.

The characters all get their own episodes focusing on them. This episode makes Serenity itself the main character. Kind of showing that the environment is as important as any one character.

2:16 I love how Josh did this episode, dropping us directly into an unknown situation and right into the action. 4:26 Remember Malcolm Reynolds was a Sargent in the Military. He knows how to remain calm and how to get people to remain calm. 7:11 Ladies and Gentlemen; River Tam. 9:11 See how he just pulls her into replacing the other mechanic so easily. 11:28 And THAT is the root of the issue between them. Mal Hates the Alliance with all his being. She supported Unification but his 'likes' her even then. 14:31 Sweet Sweet Oxygen. Had Mal NOT shut all the doors in the ship that would had filled Serenity with fresh Air all the way. Few days worth at least.

It kinda bothered me - the "couple of hours" worth of oxygen they had. The ship is pretty big, I'd expect the air they have left would last them for days at least. Two hours would mean they are stuck in a Winnebago or something like that.

This is my fav episode of the show. The lovebetween the caracters and also between them and the ship, especially Mal, gets me everytime. I also love how the flashbacks are wove in and shown and how each timeline is a different colour saturation. Just tjos whole story and the way its told here was beautiful but my fav moment is the end where the salesman is takking about a different ship but all mal can see is serenity. Love at first sight.

My absolute favorite. All the other episodes have wonderful qualities (great humor, or intensity, or story progression, etc.) and I have favorites among those, but this one just feels to me like it has it ALL. It starts off with great alarm and tension because we don't know where anyone is, we don't know what happened to Mal, and we keep wondering because they give us only bits and pieces until we're finally caught up. But there's also fantastic humor, from River telling Shepherd that they'll freeze to death first (lol, oh so comforting), or Mal and Wash fighting (tense AND funny), or Zoe and Mal meeting Jayne and bringing him to their side, or meeting Wash (and how Zoe says he bothers her, lol - I want to see more of the evolution of that love story!), or how Kaylee gets the job (hilarious and unexpected). I loved seeing how the crew came together. I loved Mal taking charge and being such an amazing captain and taking care of his crew. There's beautiful sentiment in this episode. And the overall episode is structured so fascinatingly, with the back and forth of the timeline, flashbacks to way in the past, flash forwards to Mal's present time, and different types of shorter timeline flashbacks to the events that brought Mal to where he is in present time, and rounds out back to a such an endearing flashback with Mal seeing Serenity for the first time. It's so clever, and tense, and fun, and I love the music, and the tonal shifts in the story, and the color shifts to denote different parts of the timeline... it's all just so, so good. There's a reason why Out of Gas is a huge fan favorite. So glad you two liked it as well! Thank you for the reaction! ❤️

Plus there's all the little details that make it even more well-rounded and beautiful. Like they barely make anything of it, but Wash is clearly giving Mal some of his blood in that last scene in the infirmary. I love that. And though we didn't get to see it, you can only imagine how mad Zoe was when she woke up in a shuttle and insisted they go back for Mal. "Won't happen again, sir." And Mal's look of wonder and curiosity and dare I say it even love as he looks upon Serenity for the first time (while ignoring that sales guy). Oh my heart... ALL SO GOOD. Out of Gas is the best.

More great reactions from you two! It's great foreshadowing that the exact part that caused the problem is the one Kayley has been talking about since the Pilot episode. The absolute saddest part for me is when the shuttles are all loaded, and then that mournful music starts, and seeing the shuttles launch with Mal making his way back to the bridge and shutting off the rest of the ship as he goes. The music just cuts the feelings even deeper. Mal asking if they'll be there when he wakes up goes back to his, "Everybody dies alone". If they are there, he knows he won't die. A lot of reactors can't, or don't, understand why the group don't just rush Mal and kill him. That group represents the evil Serenity crew. Mal has his gun trained on the leader and the leader knows that if they rush him, Mal will shoot him first. Discretion being the better part of valor, he elects to stand down and survive. If the show had gone on longer, I could see the two crews running into each other again in the future.

Well maybe. But in any case, at least one of the intruders will probably wind up injured or dead if there's a fight. Maybe more than one. The "hunk of junk" ship isn't worth that to them - they were looking for an easy score.

Congrats on your discovery of one of the best shows that ever aired. I became a "Brown Coat" myself back in 2012, when the Science Channel aired a "Firefly" marathon; unlike the nitwits at Fox, the Science Channel aired the episodes in the proper order and aired all 14. Like you, I can't imagine any other actor portraying Cpt Reynolds the way that Nathan did (with humor and charm and of course leadership). Did you know that Nathan patterned Mal after Han Solo? Oh, and the episode "Out of Gas" is a favorite among most fans. It's my absolute favorite as well. Even Nathan has said that it is his personal favorite. You're gonna love the remaining episodes, especially 9, 10 and 11. So, welcome to the fan base that continues to grow and grow, year after year. Ya know, there's a list of shows that never should have been cancelled, that comes out every year or so. Can you guess which series is always at the top of the list ???? - It's unfortunate that a single nitwit at Fox let this series die, but none of "Brown coats" ever will. ENJOY !!!!!!

You mentioned BBT and firefly references. While there are several two spring to mind for me. While negotiating the roommate agreement, top priority went to settling setting aside Friday nights because Firefly would be on so long, and while Sheldon was fighting with Leonard and referring to the "worst people", he stated Darth Vader, Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox that cancelled Firefly, and Leonard. :)

To hell with this!’ Great reaction guys - it makes me so happy to see you loving this show and appreciating the characters the way the rest of us do.
