I think it’s an age thing. Joaquin has really grown into a fantastic actor. When this came out, he was pretty young and took a lot of flack for perhaps overplaying the part. In retrospect, it’s quite a performance in a film with such powerhouse costars.

"Pirate's of the Caribbean drew inspiration from this soundtrack" - was the same composer (yes, it was Hans Zimmer lol) Also, in the opening scene, they were given permission to destroy a forest in Southern England (the trees were rotting and a new one needed to be planted), so that opening battle is 100% practical effects, no CGI. This was the first film I ever saw at the cinema with just me and my Mum. My Dad took me to see Hans Zimmer live just before she died and I actually met Hans the following year - but just before I did, my father died too. We played "Honor Him" (the theme at the end of the film) at his funeral. Though it was always my favourite film, it will always hold more meaning for me

"He's just trying to bait you Maximus." It was hard to ignore those taunts, but it is worth noting that he managed to dis the Emperor yet again at 18:32. In royalty etiquette, the king, queen, or emperor is addressed as "your majesty" (or in this case, Ceasar). Princes & princesses are adressed as "your highness." By addressing him with the latter, he basically refuses to acknowledge him as emperor. Am new to your channel, & love your emotive reactions btw. ❣

You think, just because you agree with tolkien, you can act like you achieved stuff he did? Yeah, hipocrisy. If you truly would be smart, you would see, that the only person you are insulting with such reponses is yourself, as you show your level of ego with nothing to back it up and yet still insult others, without carefully reading and understanding their comments.

The big roman fighting pits were designed so the sound of someone speaking in the middle would be heard at the seats in the top row. The architects already knew the concept of soundwaves. When the movie goes from Maximus mourning his family, then being found in a desert. He is a Spaniard. The Iberian coast was a massive trade route to Africa at that time. I'm guessing he was shipped over to Africa and being sent along the Med coast of Africa until finding his was back to Rome.

The writers felt that early versions of the script lost momentum after the first act; it became just a simple revenge movie. So they introduced the theme of an afterlife. This means the character's central motivation throughout the film is _A soldier trying to get back to his family_ This is also how Maximus can die at the end and it still feels like a victory to the audience. The last line spoken to Maximus is _"Go to them!"_ Truly excellent screenplay writing.

You are correct sir. The character of Maximus has elements of a real life Roman hero named Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus. He was a Roman noble in the early days of the Republic of Rome way before the time of the Emperors. He was given the title of Dictator to deal with an invasion and after winning the war, instead of staying Dictator and basically having the power of a king or emperor, he gave up his power voluntarily and went back to life as a farmer. He was considered a paragon of Roman virtue.

@@kharilane1340 Well, the role of "dictator" at the time WAS only given for the duration of a specific task or crisis or a maximum of six months. In the end, however, that concept proved not to work - because the more Rome had to rely on singular characters to get through crises, the less these people were willing to step back into the shadows after the problem was over - if Rome owed them its continued existence, the expansion of its sphere of influence and the wealth coming in from newly conquered territories, why should they be condemned to obscurity? The inability to solve that problem was why in the end, the assassination of Caesar changed very little - the ship had already sailed. It was merely a matter of who would be the first to seize all power permanently.

Marcus Aurelius is my all-time favorite person from history. He is remembered in history as a philosopher king which, according to Plato, is a ruler who possesses intelligence, reliability, and a willingness to live a simple life. He was a stoic philosopher and constantly reflected on his failings and how he could improve himself. He is the last ruler of the Five Good Emperors that presided over the golden age of the Roman Empire. I highly recommend buying Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, it is a compilation of his musings of stoic philosophy and his thoughts on good living and is far better than any mass peddled self-help crap that you see nowadays.

@@robbmiller8459 There is some interesting thoughts on that. It is unclear if he ever was directly responsible for the persecution of Christians at Lyons. As a matter of fact, the guy who wrote about those persecutions finished 150 years after it was supposed to have happened, and no Christian sources from the time even wrote about these events which is odd. I am thinking if this persecution did in fact take place (plenty of these events took place so its very reasonable to assume it did) that Aurelius had no direct contact with the event itself. This doesn't excuse the treatment of Christians during this time, but with everything we know of Marcus I can't imagine him approving the mass torture of people in his empire just for being a different religion. Discipline for the provinces was more regional than religious or cultural, if a city fell out of line it was the city who was punished, not a particular religion. But the martyrdom narrative is much more effective, so once Christianity became the dominant religion in Europe it makes sense that the history would be skewed.

For all his supposed wisdom and intelligence he made one of the worst decisions in History, which started the downward spiral that would eventually lead to Rome's collapse. He was the last of the five good emperors because for the previous four they had changed the tradition and chosen the next emperor based on merit and accomplishment and having lots of experience instead of being a blood relation. For some reason Marcus decided his own young, stupid, horrible son was the best candidate so he went back to blood lineage (yes he wanted Commodus to rule) with disastrous results immediately and down the line and Rome never recovered.

historic notes Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 26 April 121 - 17 March 180 was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers known, but later, as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather. After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius. Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. After Antoninus died in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne alongside his adoptive brother, who reigned under the name Lucius Verus. Under his rule the Roman Empire witnessed heavy military conflict. In the East, the Romans fought successfully with a revitalized Parthian Empire and the rebel Kingdom of Armenia. Marcus defeated the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatian Iazyges in the Marcomannic Wars; however, these and other Germanic peoples began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. He modified the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. The persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire appears to have increased during his reign, but his involvement in this is unlikely since there is no record of early Christians in the 2nd century calling him a persecutor, and Tertullian even called Marcus a "protector of Christians".The Antonine Plague broke out in 165 or 166 and devastated the population of the Roman Empire, causing the deaths of five to ten million people. Lucius Verus may have died from the plague in 169.Unlike some of his predecessors, Marcus chose not to adopt an heir. His children included Lucilla, who married Lucius, and Commodus, whose succession after Marcus has been a subject of debate among both contemporary and modern historians. The Column and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius still stand in Rome, where they were erected in celebration of his military victories. Meditations, the writings of "the philosopher" - as contemporary biographers called Marcus - are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. These writings have been praised by fellow writers, philosophers, monarchs, and politicians centuries after his death. Commodus 31 August 161 - 31 December 192 was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 to 192. He served jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until the latter's death in 180, and thereafter he reigned alone until his assassination. His reign is commonly thought as marking the end of a golden age of peace and prosperity in the history of the Roman Empire the Pax Romana. Commodus accompanied his father during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176. The following year he became the youngest emperor and consul up to that point, at the age of 16. During his solo reign, the Roman Empire enjoyed reduced military conflict compared with the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Intrigues and conspiracies abounded, leading Commodus to revert to an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, culminating in his creating a deific personality cult, including his performing as a gladiator in the Colosseum. Throughout his reign, Commodus entrusted the management of affairs to his palace chamberlain and praetorian prefects, namely Saoterus, Perennis and Cleander. Commodus' assassination in 192, by a wrestler in the bath who held him underwater, marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. He was succeeded by Pertinax, the first emperor in the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors. Show less

In real history, the part where commodus was killed by a gladiator was true but his name was Narcissus not Maximus and was in his bath. The movie had changed some of the storylines to make it feel more epic, but the brutality the extent to which a person need to go to to survive during the Roman era was portrayed well. Also Augustus Ceasar was not killed but died of natural causes. Nonetheless, the time of the roman empire life was hard and brutal with people living life from each day to day. Beautiful acting from Joaquin's and Russel's character and love how they stitched emotions and the sequences together. Love Ridley Scott movies.

Joaquin Phoenix also deserved an academy award for his performance in Gladiator. If I may, watch Dead Poets Society with Robin Williams. A fantastic movie. Be sure to have your tissues nearby.

He was also fantastic in the dramas Moscow on the Hudson and One Hour Photo. He finally got an Oscar for Good Will Hunting, but he was great in other dramatic movies before that one. DPS is one of his all time greats too.

Unfortunately, this was the movie that didn't get the best movie award for the year it came out in. It's also the famous moment where Russell Crowe stormed out of the awards, which I would say was justified, considering it WAS the best movie of that year. :/ Edit: I'm not sure if it was snubbed for Best Movie or Best Actor, but I knew it was Gladiator that was the movie that made Russell Crowe walk out. :/

Hans Zimmer, yes, one of the very best cinematic composer in the history of movies. And I don't mean that sarcastically. The guy's a genius. The only soundtrack I can think of that's even close is James Horner's Willow. These two bring me to tears every time.

@Paul WT kingdom of heaven is a fine movie. Its not accurate in some details but pretty accurate in the general scope. In crusades times, most crusaders commanders were murderous assholes, and for most christians was ok to kill heathens for no further reason. If you cant accept that there is wrong in your 'side' of history you are just willfully blind. Plus, did you even see the movie? It depicts Saladin as a righteous man, wich he was, but it doesnt forgets the wrongdoings from other muslims

21:37 - Joaquin improvised that scream in her face and her reaction is genuine! Joaquin doesn't get enough plaudits! The guy's been KILLING IT for about 24+ years! And 22:39 - it wouldn't surprise me if Ridley Scott came up with that as he directed Russel Crowe to watch the path of the Robin's flight in the opening scene...

A few things about Gladiators and their arenas. First, gladiators were basically athlete celebrities, and quite a bit of money was invested in them to train them at gladiator schools and keep them fit and healthy (good and healthy food, massages, the whole shebang). Of course, that means that there’s quite the investment behind each fighter, and their patron would not take kindly to suddenly losing all that. As a result, gladiators didn’t die nearly as much as modern pop culture would have us believe, in fact fights were rarely to the death. Gladiators were often outfitted with either matching or contrasting (like the heavily armored murmillo versus the almost naked but trident-and-net-armed retiarius) outfits to make the fights fair yet entertaining. Of course, fights such as the one we see with the chariots where one side is clearly outmatched still occurred, and were popular among the crowd, but the poor saps on the receiving end were rarely professional gladiators, that would be a horrid waste of money and talent(s). Often those were slaves or prisoners sent off to be torn apart by beasts for the pleasure of the masses. Also, the acoustics in a place such as the Colosseum meant that sound carried easily, so someone talking in the bottom rows or even the pit itself could be heard all the way to the top rows if there wasn’t noise from the crowd, without even needing to shout that much. The Greeks had perfected this system and built their initial amphitheaters in places with great natural acoustics, and the Romans (literally) built on that by copying their style and creating their own structures with good acoustics (though I’m sure that the Greeks had also managed to build their own “artificial” amphitheater’s without having to rely on natural spots).

When I watched this film for the first time, it skyrocket to my top 3 favorite movies of all times. I loved all the actors and their performances but Joaquin Phoenix stole the show by a landslide...his performance was absolutely magnificent, whenever I think of a vile and horrible villain, I think of Joaquin's Commodus.
