This is actually one of my favorite HP movies. I know people really like the third one, but for me this is the movie that is most loyal to it's source material, still have some of that "wonders of magic" feeling while getting a little bit grown up and talking about more serious subjects. The acting can be a bit rough still, but I really enjoy this movie :P

same but of course it's my favorite book too which is rare in the hp community but i don't care, i love the whole mystery killer concept and seeing the world through tom's eyes half-blood prince is my second favorite book but the movie wasn't as good (though i still like the movie don't et me wrong) i think the first three films are the most loyal to the books partly in half due to they are smaller in size so there is less to leave out
@sam_c953 жыл бұрын
I do really like this movie and I agree with most of what you say (although my favourite is the third one haha). It is loyal, but my one criticism is that they kind of went wild with the spells I think. It's been ages since I read the books but I'm fairly sure they just made up a bunch of non-book spells for this movie, but they also made almost every spell including ones from the book do the same thing - push you back and make you spin in the air. The dual scene I really dislike in the film.

Never met anyone who just like me, have the second book as one of the favorites. When I was a kid and I read this book, I was so immersed in this mystery killer concept, so creative. My favorite is the Half-Blood Prince and Chamber of Secrets next, the same for the movies, just as said above, I think these two were more loyal to the source material.

The street names are a play on words. Diagon Alley = diagonally. Knockturn Alley = nocturnally. Harry pronounced it more like diagonally, which is off kilter. It sent him slightly off. And of course Knockturn alley is dark and sinister. Diagon alley also describes something that is there but sometimes hard to see except by those that know where to look. Think word puzzle where diagonal words are harder to see than those that run vertically and horizontally.

No spoilers ahead. "What sort of insult is scarhead?" They're 12, so a reasonably good one. Especially since the scar is linked to the worst trauma of Harry's life. Actually, their age answers a few of your questions. They're young and dumb. Also, going forward, just assume Dumbledore knows almost everything(he's the greatest wizard alive after all) and they make it quite clear when he doesn't know something. The series really gets good after this one and I look forward to your reactions.

When Ron says "it's not much but it's home" he's not being sarcastic. Compared to other families in the Wizarding world Ron is quite poor. Now that you've seen the rest of the movies you might have noticed that Ron and his siblings usually get a homemade sweater or scarf for chirtsmas because his family is poor. So that line was kind of showing Ron's maturity that he recognizes that he's poor, but still appreciates it cause Harry's life have taught him to appreciate having a home period. the movies get darker and more mature as they go on. the first one is good because it sets a certain tone of everything kind of being innocent and shiny, setting up the magic and sparkle of hogwarts - the feasts, the fun bits of magic we see, etc. but as each film goes on, the themes get darker and darker and more mature as the characters mature as well. there's a reason the first one is always aired at christmas time as a christmas special along with christmas themed movies, there's a certain tone that it has. while it's not necessarily 'worse' than the other films, there is a signficant change in tone and theme. things will get darker. you'll begin to see more side characters and back story. and i have a feeling with each movie, you'll have a similar feeling of them just improving with each one you watch

But now I'd say it's one of my favourites because of how everything ties back in to be relevant so neatly - Moaning Myrtle, the diary at the beginning, the spiders, the mandrakes, Dobby, the phoenix, Parseltongue, the history of the Chamber, Tom Riddle, etc. I do like it more than Philosopher's Stone for sure. And the next one, Prisoner of Azkaban, is my absolute favourite!

The weird thing with these films is that you can judge them in different ways... If you judge on the films alone, you might not judge the same as if you're comparing to the books... I know the books, so I personally have more issues with films 4, 6 and 7+8, but even though I'm not keen on the adaptations, arguably they could be better as films compared to others... I think I'd say 6 is my least favourite, but that's not to say it can't be enjoyable.

29:37 I agree. I liked the plot better....though like all of the Harry Potter films, it didn't do justice to the spirit of the source book for me. Chamber of Secrets was easily my favorite book of the first 3. The core mystery is compelling, and the sense of danger once the Chamber is opened is immense. The entire school is at constant risk of fatal or near-fatal attack from a completely unknown threat for months on end. The amount of fear and panic this caused in the school was (sadly) understated in the film. From an artistic perspective, the VFX alone were significantly improved (some of the creature shots were actually practical, rather than CGI). Fawkes looked amazing and the Basilisk looked pretty great too. I was a bit meh on the hydraulic Aragog but I appreciate the attempt. People like to apologize for some of the goofy CGI in the early Harry Potter films by claiming ''product of their time''...but the mere fact of the Lord of the Rings trilogy being in production at the same time refutes that argument. Most of the issues with the first film carried on to the second...particularly the way every spell is executed much too slowly with an overabundance of fanfare. Fortunately that issue goes away in the third film, and largely stays away.

Actually the ending is very lazy. Harry is literally given everything in the ending. Nothing was earned. It’s the weakest ending in any of the books/films. Compare it to the first film where all 3 heroes had to use their skills to overcome obstacles and here Harry is literally just given everything he needs to succeed. It’s deus Ex machina overload. And I say this as a huge Harry Potter fan but this the weakest story of all of them.

I agree. Also, how thick are the walls if the basilisk travels inside them? And how didn't any of the painting see anything? And how did Slytherin hide a huge chamber in the castle if Rowena Ravenclaw was the one who built it? Aaaand why is Lockhart in this movie?
@janetuss64963 жыл бұрын
I agree that there’s a bit more deus ex machina than the other books, but I wouldn’t say harry had an easier time in this one either. He still had to use an incredible amount of bravery and wit to save himself, he could have easily died at certain points. I mean if I had to face off with a basilisk at age 12, I would have faltered for sure (but then again, I’m not a Gryffindor). And he could have easily just ignored the Sorting Hat because it seemed useless in a fight, but he trusted his loyalty to Dumbledore. And he displayed wit by thinking to use the basilisk fang to stab the diary …it might seem obvious to readers now, but I probably couldn’t have thought of that, especially under duress and threat of imminent death. I don’t think the ending was lazy writing at all, this is the ending that sets up a ton of future plot points.
@ChewyPineapple3 жыл бұрын
@@erikperhs_ - Very thick. The castle is gigantic, the walls of Hogwarts are full of all sorts of hidden things...secret passageways, an entire room whose door only appears at certain times...and some basilisk-sized pipes. - Did you see any portraits in the corridors where Mrs Norris, Justin & Nearly-Headless Nick were found? - The Chamber isn't so much *in* the castle as excavated out of the bedrock underneath it, with a tunnel connecting it to the existing drainage system from the bathroom Myrtle now haunts. Slytherin would have done all that in secret before leaving the school, but well after it opened to students. -Lockhart is in the movie because he's the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for Harry's second year, in the book on which this film is based.

If you thought this was too much Deus ex machina I'd give the rest of the series a miss. Harry's plot armor only gets thicker from here.
