There's actually a scene in Game of Thrones that spoils the ending to this show, you may have already watched it if no one let you know ahead of time. You probably won't remember it, but in case you don't want to be soiled, it happens in Episode 4 of season 3. Just as a heads up, in case you ever rewatch the show or anybody else's reactions of Game of Thrones. Also, history and lore for season 5 pretty much gives the story away.

There's also spoilers in season 5, one of the last episodes. Princess Shireen is reading "The Dance of the Dragons" and tells Ser Davos the basic plot of what happens here.

I can't remember if it was specified in the books but I'm guessing the prophecy never got passed down to Viserys. It seemed like it was told only to the current heir, but after Rhaegar died (who definitely did know about the prophecy) which is when Viserys became heir, Aerys was both probably the only living person that knew about it /and/ was already out of his mind. Viserys fled with his pregnant mother anyway so I'm not sure if there would have been time even if Aerys wanted to try and explain it to an 8 year old. It kind of sucks that this prophecy was a perfectly kept secret but managed to be passed down from Aegon the Conquerer all the way to Aerys, only to not quite make it the last couple of steps to the actual Targaryen claiming the throne at the time of the Long Night. *Disclaimer for all, it's been a hot minute since I've read the books (and I've only read the ASOIAF main series, not Fire and Blood) so if I've forgotten or misremembered anything I'm very sorry

A queen's purpose in this world is to produce heirs. And in Westeros, the heir to the Iron Throne is traditionally male. This is not an enlightened or modern culture. If noblewomen, or royal women, are lucky, their husbands at least respect and honor them. If they're very lucky, their husbands will allow them to exert some influence over their domains. And if the ladies are sharp and brave enough, they will find ways to take some power and hold it, even if their husbands are initially unwilling to share. Queen Aemma, Viserys' first cousin, is a traditional wife, sacrificing her health and ultimately her life to try to give her husband a son. Sadly, Viserys and Aemma love each other.

Odds are Rhaegar knew about the prophecy. That's part of why he chose Lyanna. Also, take a closer look at Viserys's dagger.
@gunkulator17 ай бұрын
I'm of the opinion that he probably did not know it. If you already know this story and then look at the histories of who succeeded who on the throne, there's a pretty obvious breaking point where the secret prophecy did not get passed down.
@havok62807 ай бұрын
@@gunkulator1 disagree. The prophecy did get lost at one point. However, Rhaeger was a bookish child but at one point he read something and immediately told the master at arms that he needed to be a warrior. Also, Dany had a vision at the house of the undying where Rhaegar said his son's song was the song of ice and fire.
@gunkulator17 ай бұрын
@@havok6280 The prophecy that Rhaeger read about was The Prince That Was Promised which may or not be related to the prophecy here. Mellisandre connects The Prince That Was Promised to the prophecy of Azor Ahai which is a much older prophecy. Maester Aemon believes that there's an error in the translation and it's really The Princess That Was Promised and that it refers to Daenerys. My personal opinion is that what Martin is doing us showing us how unreliable and uncertain prophecies are and how stories of the supernatural often get muddled and mixed together over time. In that light, I do not think the prophecy that Rhaeger read about is quite the same as the one Viserys relates here.

Yes, the long night was why Aegon conquered Westeros. One of their ancestors foresaw the doom of Valyria a century before, so the Targaryens fled Valyria. While on Dragonstone, Aegon dreamed of the long night. I think (personally) he was going to do it in peace mail. But after the thing with the stormlands, he saw a divided Westeros was never going to unite until it was "conquered" and made into on Kingdom, launching the war. Also, Jon's father, Rhaegar, was obsessed with the "prophecy," especially the part that has to do with "Ice," as well. Ppl speculate is the reason he pursued Lyanna. Yes, he prolly fell in love with her, but it was because of that prophecy he pursued her. It's just interesting to think about.
@gunkulator17 ай бұрын
Rhaegar was obsessed with The Prince That Was Promised prophecy and believed his son Aegon to be that prince. Whether that prophecy is the same as Aegon The Conqueror's prophecy is unclear. Melisandre equates The Prince That Was Promised to Azor Ahai whose prophecy about saving the world is thousands of years old. Maester Aemon believes the word "Prince" was a mistranslation and the right word is "Princess" and that the prophecy refers to Daenerys.

I'm so excited for your reactions to this. You were very fair with your viewing of the last GoT seasons, and still a lot of fun to watch. HotD is so damn good, and I don't think we have to worry about the things that GoT had to deal with in the later seasons. The writing this is based on is completed.
@gunkulator17 ай бұрын
Sort of. The book this series is base on is styled as a history of these times written down by a maester many years after the fact using three primary but often contradictory sources. The level of detail in the book is far less than the ASOIAF books. Indeed, the book is actually a history of the entire Targaryen dynasty and the story HOTD is telling is only a few chapters in it. So almost everything we see in this episode and will see in future episodes comes from the show writers, not from books. The general outline and events are there but almost none of the dialogue and characterizations.

Attention to detail is what this series and GOT is known for. Queen Aemma tells Rhaenyra early on that the child-birthing bed is the woman's battlefield. Later, the show intercuts between the tournament knights beating each other to a pulp and Aemma's bloody birthing bed. Pay attention to the overhead view of the tournament field. The shape of the field is not coincidental.

@@LauraGS564 I... don't entirely disagree. There were a number of scenes in GOT that seemed to go completely over her head. Two in particular come to mind. one is when Jaime said to Brienne "We don't get to choose who we love", and she said "You're one to talk." Like... yeah. That was his point - he didn't choose to love Cersei. The other is when Smalljon Umber says to Ramsay "Your father bent the knee to Robb Stark. Was Robb Stark right to trust him?" She said "But... he betrayed him. He didn't bend the knee." Again... that was his point. There were others, but those are the two that come to mind. To be fair though, I have seen worse. BRIDGECO in particular, I thought were way worse than Emmy in terms of knee-jerk reactions and things going over their heads.

GRRM has said that Daemon was one of the most polarizing characters in the lore. He was, at the same time, one of the most loved, and most hated people in King's Landing. We don't know in what tone of voice Daemon referred to the tragically brief-living baby as "Heir for a Day". He might have raised a somber and well-meant toast to the child. My problem with Daemon is not those words, but that so soon after his brother lost wife and child, Daemon was partying in a brothel rather than supporting his bereaved niece and her father.
@beautifulbluebell20377 ай бұрын
@@gailf1617 I'm really sorry. You neither understand Daemon nor the GOT world of House of the Dragon. Once someone alleged something about someone else, in a public setting no less, then that is the "truth" no matter what the actual truth is. There are no words you can use to change that "truth". Please rewatch the scene between Rhaenyra and Viserys about if Rhaenyra slept with Daemon. "The truth doesn't matter..." Futhermore even though they all are family they don't speak and inquire about things honestly, curriously. Only Daemon and Rhaenyra have honest talks. Just take Viserys choosing Alicent for wife and never telling Rhaenyra beforehand, him never speaking with her of her mothers death for more than 6 months. And countless other occasions. They all love each other but only ones truly communicating are Daemon and Rhaenyra.
