My mom and I would watch this movie every Christmas. She would cry every time the bell would ring giving Clarence his wings. Mom died from Cancer in 2011. On the way home I heard the bell rang. Mom got her wings.

50:02 this actress has an amazing talent....... earlier in the film she was such a sweet, kind loving mother and she played the role to perfection and now at this timestamp in the film she is a bitter, angry woman, worn down by life and you can see it in her face and hear it in her voice. Such a great talent.

Beulah Bondi as Mrs. Bailey She played supporting roles in several films during the 1930s, and was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played the mother of James Stewart in four films: Of Human Hearts, Vivacious Lady, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Although at her height in Hollywood from the 1930s until the 1950s, Bondi never retired, and she continued acting well into her later years, at the age of 87 winning an Emmy Award for her guest-star role on The Waltons in 1976.

Another great classic with the same director and same star, Jimmy Stewart, is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. By the way, this was Jimmy Stewart’s first movie after the war, in which he was an Army Air Force pilot who flew dozens of combat missions in Europe. Some of the scenes in which he is crying are real-he tapped into his PTSD. Also, forgetful people used to tie strings around their fingers to remind them of important things.

The last James Stewart biography I read noted that he'd told Clark Gable and a few other friends how difficult it was living with the knowledge that he'd killed innocent civilians on the ground during his bombing runs in WWII. And then later, when his oldest son volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam and was killed there while still in his teens, Mr. Stewart suffered survivors' guilt.

It’s A Wonderful Life is the greatest movie I’ve ever seen. It never fails to choke me up. I enjoyed your reaction. You laughed so often only to then be saddened when poor George hit another snag in his life. He gave up his dreams, but his real destiny was to help other people reach their dreams.

This movie came out in 1946. "Do you have any idea how long it takes a working man to save $5000." Somehow that line hasn't aged a bit. That shouldn't be possible, but here we are.

Jimmy Stewart was a real life war hero. And he became one AFTER he was already a Hollywood STAR. He had already won an Academy Award! When he joined he didn't take a cushy celebrity military job, he flew a B-17! A true hero.

Jimmy Stewart did more than that. He rose from private to colonel during WWII and flew 20 combat missions as the leader of a B-24 bomber squadron, and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, so he was a genuine military hero. He stayed in the Air Force Reserve and rose to Brigadier General. President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Freedom, the highest award that can be given to a civilian. Look up his biography which is online. Like George Bailey, Jimmy Stewart really did have a wonderful life.

Jimmy Stewart (George) was a real life hero of WWII. He flew 20 combat missions over Germany as a B-24 Liberator Bomber pilot. He eventually became Wing Commander of an entire Division of bombers. He was awarded the Distinguished Flyers Cross (just one medal below the Congressional Medal of Honor). This was his first movie back after returning from the war.

Emma, your reaction to "It's A Wonderful Life" was touching and eloquent. It is my personal Christmas favorite and now yours! Some notes & other points of interest: -The lighter that George always lights hoping to win a million dollars was a complmentary cigar lighter. They also had a way to cut the end off the cigar."Hotdog!" -Uncle Billy, being a forgetful type, tied string to his fingers to help remember. They're called 'Forget-Me-Knots", but they didn't seem to help him much. -Mr. Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore, Drew Barrymore's great-uncle. -My personal favourite moment was the dinner scene. It seemed so real and heartfelt . It includes a moment that many overlook. George tells his Dad that he's a great guy. lt would be the LAST thing he would say to his father since he died that night of a stroke. -Not only did George save Mr. Gower the misery of 20 years in prison, but he also saved the life of sick child. -Another example of George's meaning to Bedford Falls is how, when talking to Sam Wainwright made an off the cuff remark that Sam could set up his factory there in Bedford Falls, using the mill that closed down and get lots of labour due to it's closing. The ending always makes me cry, especially when his brother makes the toast, "To my brother, George, the richest man in town! " 😭😭😭♥ 😭😭😭

Stunning movie, tear up all the way through, whether watching the full movie or the reactions to it (of which I continually scour KZbin to find). But another wonderful aspect of this film often overlooked it that is an encapsulation of American history during the pivotal years from 1918 to 1946, from the viewpoint of the person on the street. And by the people behind the scenes who also lived through this. There is the 1918 flu epidemic, the roaring twenties, the fall-out from the Great Depression and then the War years. This movie should be shown in every class on 20th century American history, instead of just dry listing of dusty dates.

Great idea! Students would respond more enthusiastically and be interested in digging into each topic (I think.) The characters in the film who went to war represent different “theaters” of the war, as well as George with being in charge of blackouts on the home front and “recycling” drives. Could be an innovative educational tool!

Jimmy Stewart was an [Army] Air Force pilot from the Second World War to Vietnam. It's been suggested this movie was PTSD therapy for him. Because of bank crises like these the US now has Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC which guarantees ordinary bank customers can always withdraw from their bank deposits. Other deposit insurance companies can cover richer depositors.

Like you, a lot of reactors have difficulty sorting out the scene where it appears George and Mary are loading up their car with all their own children, not realizing yet that they're the Martini children and the Baileys are just helping them move to their new house in Bailey Park. It is a little unclear at the beginning.

A great movie any time of the year. It was a Christmas classic for years. Another Jimmy Stewart film you should view is "Harvey". Stewart said in an interview that Harvey was his favorite film. The message is very sweet and the humor was on point for the time before "wokeness". Good reaction to this one.

Since you asked of all the movies he made this is director Frank Capra's favorite. For lead actor Jimmy Stewart this is only his second favorite. Of the movies he was in the one he liked the most was called HARVEY from 1950. And like this one it is timeless.

When the banks closed it was 1933 when the banks closed. A "run" on the vank was first come first served. If people got there too late there would be no money. Now bank deposits are insured by the federal government. This was during the Great Depression which was world wide.

Loved this movie when I watched it for the first time back in the late 70's. My father & mother had mentioned it to me a couple years earlier that I should watch it, especially around Christmas time. They were right!! Since then it has been my favorite Christmas time movie. Loved your reaction, because you reacted to it the same way I did the first time I saw it. Every time I watch this movie I sit back with a carmel frappacino, and for me, they both go hand in hand. Thanks again, and keep them coming!! 👍

The Best Years Of Our Lives is about various veterans returning from war, and packs a huge emotional wallop. IMO, the best American film of all time. Frank Capra (the director of It's A Wonderful Life) also directed Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, that has to do with corruption in government.
