Love that they used a longtime stage theater tradition; the Dad and the villain played by the same actor. Representing what needs to be faced and overcome in order to separate from the parent and become your own person.
@NetanelWorthy Жыл бұрын
The actor that played his dad also plays the villain. This is actually something that goes back to stage plays like Peter Pan. Usually the actor that played Mr. Darling also played Captain Hook. When Alan enters the Jumanji board game as a child, he takes that fear of his father with him. Alan internalises it; it never goes away and remains with him for the next 26 years. So, when Alan is freed from the game as an adult, and Jumanji subsequently creates a villain for Alan to face, this villain becomes a representation of what he fears the most - his father. And the best way to link Alan’s father and Van Pelt together (for audiences), is by having the same actor play the two roles! When Alan flees from Van Pelt in the movie, he is metaphorically running away from the problems he had with his dad, all those years ago. Decades may have passed since they spoke, but Alan has still not got over the differences he had with his dad - and that’s what Van Pelt represents. It is only later, when Alan faces up to his fear and demonstrates he is not the little boy who was once afraid of his father, that he can complete the game. In doing this, Van Pelt returns to the Jumanji board game, time is reset, and Alan is able to make peace with his dad - who lives in the new timeline that is established at the end of the movie.

That hunter looked like his dad because Alan was afraid of his dad, that’s why he created Van Pelt with the image of his own dad and kept running away from him. When he gave up running, he has to face “his dad” like a man.

Van Pelt being played by Alan's dad is, as far as I know, a reference to the tradition of Peter Pan theater plays where Captain Hook is typically played by Mr. Darling's actor, which adds a whole thematic narrative to the whole thing by having the antagonist be the adult presence who the protagonist has a difficult relationship with.

Sometimes in games you can get something like, "Unable to move until someone roles a 6 or a 10" or some other number. If you are playing with just one other person, they continue to roll, until you get released from being frozen in place. So had Sarah continued playing, Allen would have been released from the game much earlier... However, there also would have been a lot of the game released as well.
@christopherb501 Жыл бұрын
I have to assume something similar if someone died, tho maybe in that case the game would allow a new player to take over. The REAL question is, what happens if _everyone_ dies?
@ChrissaTodd Жыл бұрын
Sarah was told by her therapist what she saw was in her head thats why despite being there she said he was murdered
@otakuwolf4ever985 Жыл бұрын
That and it was easier than sticking to her story since everyone thought she was a lunatic since she told them what actually happened to Alan.

If Sarah hadn't ran away and rolled again but didn't get a 5 or 8 she would have had unlimited turns until she rolled a 5 or 8.

Or she died. In which case, I HOPE the game would allow for new players to join.

"A hunter from the darkest wild / Makes you feel just like a child." "What is it?" "Van Pelt." Fun Fact: The film was made into a board game by MB Games in 1996 and it was re-released in 2018. Double Duty Fact: The dual casting of Jonathan Hyde as both Alan's father and the antagonistic hunter Van Pelt is similar to the theatrical custom of Peter Pan, with George Darling and Captain Hook being played by the same actor. Crocodile Hunter Fact: Robin Williams told a story about filming the scene where Alan wrestles a crocodile. He said that in one take he got a little carried away and thumped the crocodile with his elbow, forgetting that there was a man inside the suit. He heard a voice inside the crocodile yell "Hey!" in protest. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Van Pelt's (Jonathan Hyde) hunting rifle is a Winchester M1901 rifle, highly modified with an amended stock (complete with a custom checkered pattern and cheek cushion), a false box magazine, a rear sight, a large tube placed over the barrel with a foresight, and muzzle "bell" in order to make it appear to be an elephant gun. When it runs out of ammunition, which cannot be replenished since it's been discontinued since 1903, he ends up replacing it with a Daewoo USAS-12 CQ outfitted with an unusually large scope, a drum magazine, and a suppressor to make it look like a sniper rifle. Location Location Fact: Keene, NH substituted for the fictional town of Brantford. Frank's Barber Shop is a featured setting as well as the Parrish Shoe sign, which was painted for the film. Robin Williams was beloved by Keene townsfolk during filming. He was even presented with the keys to the city by Keene's mayor in 1994. After his death in 2014, Keene residents crafted a makeshift memorial of flowers and candles below the Parrish Shoes sign, and even organized a public screening of the film. The Sir-Save-A-Lot sequence was shot in Tsawwassen, BC, at what was then the open-air Delta Fair Mall. The store had been Liquidation World before it closed. At the time of filming, the store was vacant, and although the exterior was repaired after the movie was shot, the store never re-opened. The mall has since been redeveloped, with Safeway the anchor tenant until 2016, when Safeway closed and was replaced by Save-On Foods. The Liquidation World in the old mall was along the west perimeter of the new mall, which is now a parking lot.

Yeah, the rules of the game are kinda strange, and it's a shame we never got to see what happens if other events happen, to learn the quirks. Like if Sarah rolled anything but a 5 or 8, would the game be stuck forever, or would she have kept rolling until the end of the game? If a player dies playing the game, does the game recognise the player is dead and just skip their turn until the end or does it continue forever till everyone dies? If everyone playing the game dies, does the game reset, or is it permanent? Could someone join mid-game if there is an available piece? Like if Alan and Sarah had rolled a few times before, could Judy and Peter have joined? Can events in the game be cut short if someone rolls their turn? Are there any GOOD fates to land on (every roll spits animals out along with weather, plants and earth events)? Are the spaces the same or random, like if you played two games in a row and roll a three your first turn, does the same thing happen or not)? And what is the jungle like? Like could Alan have hiked out of it if he'd REALLY tried, is the jungle sealed off from the rest of the world (you walk and walk and hit an invisible wall), or is it like a loop where as soon as you walk as far north of the jungle as you can go, you suddenly appear at the farthest southern point instantaneously? I mean we do see Alan's house in Welcome to the Jungle, but was everything else in the later sequels actually there or did it all change between iterations of the game? It might be since Van Pelt between films looks vastly different.

When I was little, i was obsessed with this movie so my mom bought the board game and did everything in her power (including using her theatrical connections) to make the game as real as possible for me. She took it a step too far and refused to drop the act. Traumatized the living crap out of me! I still have nightmares to this day!
