Totally agree & the thing I didnt like either is that those that actually felt remorse & had little or nothing to do with it died while the cop & Foxx's character who is the most to blame & least remorseful get to live. I'd much rather see both them die more than some other characters. Or if they had to have Clyde die have him kill himself after he killed everybody else except the wife & daughter so he has to live with all those deaths on his conscience. Then he receives a package of all the times clyde couldve taken out his family just to show him how easily it wouldve been to take them out.

The original ending, Foxx’s character did not win. He didn’t want to be seen as the bad guy, so he forced the studio to rewrite the ending so that he lives and movie goers would see him as the hero. The new ending has him alive, but almost nobody thinks him the hero or cheers him. Studio should have stuck with the original ending.

In the beginning Nick think that system works, and while you always work by the rules no matter how much damage you cause it's justice, and it's the best you can get, no matter how unfair it seems. Clyde showed him that you have to break the rules sometimes to do what's right and system is not foolproof. But Clyde is not right too, because if you take completely upon yourself to determine justice, it would maybe just for you and harmful for those you deem guilty but who actually innocent, like Nick's assistant lady (forgot her name)

Jamie Fox's character didn't learn anything about right and wrong until he was pushed into it by his enemy. That was the lesson Gerrard Butler was trying to teach him. Fox's character was more interested in a high prosecution rate at the expense of doing what was right. Our judicial systems are created for the judges and lawyers to make deals while the people they claim to represent, suffer. That's the flaw of the "Legal" system which see people as a commodity, and not a living man or woman.

Yes Jamie foxs character cared about his prosecution rate. But he was also right in that he might have not gotten a conviction on either person if he had t made a deal. Clyde expected perfect justice and such things don’t often exist in a court system that allows for due process. It doesn’t give Clyde the right to kill everyone in the system just because he feels aggrieved. Clyde was actually a worse villain than the people who killed his family. He just justified his villainy by saying he was taking on a corrupt system. But he was a sadistic murderer who treated people who were doing their jobs like they were enemy comabatants. And he learned something in the end too. He could have stopped trying to seek vengeance and he could live, but he brought his own death by going through with his vengeance. And what did it get him? Did he bring down the system? Or did he just show thst he was a terrorist?

But he also cut deals because he was trying to get the best possible outcome for his client where he could still win. He got one of the people to be put on death row and executed remember. That’s not nothing.Clyde refused to accept that lawyers have ti work inside a system that constrains them ti some degree. They didn’t create the system they just do their jobs and follow the law. Clyde punished people who simply did their jobs and followed the law because he didn’t like the system. Even thiugh one guy was already about to be executed fir the crime (which was because nick was able to get him sentenced) that still wasn’t good enough for Clyde. He had to add punishment on top of the punishment the guy was already receiving (a death sentence) simply because he felt like the law wasn’t good enough. Not good enough? The guy was about to be executed for crying out. Clyde should have faced jail time for torturing and killing the guy who got off even though I understand why he did it. But he didn’t stop there. He started treating people who simply did their jobs like enemies in a war. He used people to simply as a means to an end simply because he could. The woman he blew up in a car. WhT was her crime? The guy he shanked in prison. What did he do that warranted being shanked? Clyde didn’t care. He just killed people who hew viewed as pawns to be sacrificed to achieve his goal of tearing the system down. Only he didn’t. All he did was murder a bunch of people because he’s a self righteous megalomaniac military tactician who killed people for a living (some law abiding citizen) and decided to kill ppl who he didn’t think did their jobs good enough for his liking. He’s a victim who becomes the villain. Rather he was always a villain. But the guys who attacked him picked the wrong person to fuck with. And because nick was unlucky enough to be assigned the case he and his entire team also became victims. Nick was right to want justice for his daughter and right to fight a Corrupt system or at least a broken system. But not by acting like an executioner.

@@nwj03a The Nuremburg Trials show that blindly following orders is not an excuse. The blonde, the old man, and foxx cared more about conviction percentage rates than actual justice. Does that excuse his actions? No. What it does do is show commentary on how most current DA offices function, caring more about personal rates than the people that are swept under the rug by their actions. This is why vigilante stories like this are such hits because we all know that the system is broken to an extent, and the first conclusion we all come to is the most primitive one, to use violence to distribute justice.

No, Clyde was the bad guy. He took bill reynplds whos on;y crime was that he was part of the prosecution amd buried him alive. Then he stabbed a prisoner in the neck for no reason. Then he blew up a prosecutor who did nothing wrong. Then he got another prosecutor murdered. And killed a judge. How is he the good guy? Why bedside the system did him wrong and only one of the people who killed them got the death penalty? You could justify him taking his revenge on the people who killed his family. But that’s it. But then he went further and decided to inflict mass terror on people who didn’t kill his family. They were just not perfect at their jobs. Sorry, but you don’t always get your way in court. It doesn’t give you the right to bury someone alive or blow someone up in a car. He was the villain. You’re a moron for thinking he was the good guy. And he got what he deserved. He should have suffered a bit more before he went out, frankly.

After the first couple of murders, you are supposed to feel dirty because you want this guy to keep on killing. super late comment, but the reason he stripped naked when the cops were coming was for his own safety. if he was clothed, the swat team could've shot him and claimed he was reaching for something in his pocket or his waistband for a potential weapon. but since he was naked, he couldnt have reached for anything, so they had no excuse for shooting him and had to take him alive.

I prefer that ending as well, or that Clyde kills everyone, including Foxx's family. Not out of hatred or malice, but out of karma. Lawyers are the epitome of manipulation of a system that is terribly flawed to begin with. Clyde killing everyone would demonstrate that you in that position (an attorney that literally deals and makes compromises in life and death decisions for a "conviction record" instead of justice) has consequences, dire and severe ones if you misuse your office. That's how it should be to be honest. That would never fly on a movie like this, but that would have been the best ending in my opinion, with everyone dying except Jamie Foxx's character. That way he'd be the tortured person that wondered "what if I'd done the right thing." Hell, it is one reason that Seven is such a great movie. The "good guy" shouldn't always win, because in real life they don't always win. Just my 2 cents. This is still a great film though.

19:56 Didn’t think of this until now: I think another reason he waited ten years before acting upon his plan was to let Nick grow with his child, can’t expect someone to learn if they don’t understand (in this case being a family man , “You even think of touching my family?”, the irony of who Nick is talking to). Maybe that’s why Clyde doesn’t take revenge on Nick and was probably never going to, because Clyde knows best what can happen if you take family away from someone.

Yes, I agree 1000%. I'd have much preferred Butler's character (Clyde) kill everyone, including Foxx's family. Not out of spite or malice, but to show there should be true consequences to hold the power of office and attorney and manipulate the system for "conviction rates". I mean, hell there is a good 20 minutes near the end where they are talking about "fuck his civil rights" and "bend whatever laws you have to", etc., etc.,.... I want to say to people.... Hey folks, this guy is a VICTIM, and got no justice. The criminal in the beginning (who was the one that killed Clyde's family) manipulated the system and blamed his accomplice, and pretty much got of for nothing. I'm not an anarchist or a psychopath or anything like that, but Clyde was really the hero (or antihero) of this film and the ending should have been completely different. I'd have had Jamie Foxx's character end up being the one in perpetual suffering for not fulfilling his obligation and duty of his oath/office as an attorney.

Neat facts Gerard was supposed to originally play Nick while Jamie Fox would play Clyde however Gerard thought it would be interesting to play Clyde and asked Jamie Fox if it was okay to switch last minute Jamie loved Gerard in 300 so they switch their roles and ironically Josh Stewart starred in another movie called the collector ironically like this movie he breaks into a house and ends up having to save the family from something much worst.

wrong watch the movie again. nick made a plea deal with clarence, who was guilty as sin. nick knew this but because it was mostly circumstantial evidence(which is actually more then enough to get a conviction) he decided to ensure his high conviction rate and made a plea with clarence. in reality that is illogical there would be even less evidence that rupert did it, so it would have been more logical to offer rupert a plea deal and have Clyde also testify, therebye security a conviction of clarence. but no he had to do thing s the dumbass way. clyde's entire point was that nick should have just went to trial and if clarence got off then he got off because it was the RIGHT thing to do. clyde's entire point was that don't make deals just go for it the right way but that all went out the window when nick found out where the bomb was an then transported it(illegally mind you) to the prison and then ensured clyde's death. thats not doing the right thing and goes against what clyde was trying to teach him. the correct thing would have been for him to have the bomb disposal unit "dispose of the bomb" then catch Clyde sneaking back into the prison saying"we cought you red handed" we found your bomb and safely disposed of it. we have two options you admit to your actions and we take the death penalty of the table or 2 we go for the death penalty and you get executed" but nope nick actually commited murder by killing clyde and actually did not learn anything

tbh only moment he crosses the line was when he traumatized that kid with the dvd, that was uncessary. Every other person he kills have either assisted the murderer or take part of the corrupt system. Not to mention that they were all given a chance to live if they acted decently instead of challenging him when he makes threats.

People seem to tiptoe around saying it but jamie foxx character was a dirty cop, clyde was trying to fix a broken justice system and the dirty cop killed him for it

His goal wasn't to get revenge on some people and then flee the country and live out his days. His goal was to get Nick to realize why what he did was wrong and to change and that's exactly what happened. So he did "win" he just didn't survive

"You can't fight faith!" Butler came a long way since supporting in Reign Of Fire! Glad someone reacted to this, one of his best. I remember watching this in cinema. A man bawled, "JAH!" after the cellphone scene. That period was a good time for movies. Another was Fracture (Ryan Gosling), Drive (also Gosling) and Edge Of Darkness (Mel Gibson).

excellent recommends: Fracture (anthony hopkins): best court movie of all time, absolutely brilliant, even better than Clyde in this movie, lol Drive (ryan gosling): absolutely epic movie, truly amazing, makes the "Baby Driver" movie, look like a baby, laughs, highly highly highly recommend, if haven't seen it Edge of Darkness (Mel Gibson): great justice/vigilantism/vengeance movie

Stop it! He wasn't no criminal mastermind. He was a man depending on justice, But got Jamie as a ADA who only was concerned with winning. Didn't consult Butler before making a deal, didn't tell him that he took the deal with Ames. He was a law abiding citizen taking to a point of no return. And he didn't care if he lived or died.

This movie is underrated for sure slept on. I think jaime fox’s character should have died tho because he was part of the system that failed him. He tells Jaime fox’s character he would have been okay with the out come if they went to trial at least they tried. The assassination of the judge was pure savagery

My uncle did the lighting for this movie. He said it was a really tough movie to do. I love it but he never enjoys talking about his time doing this one! He told me that Gerard Butler and Jaime Foxx are two of the nicest people you could ever want to work with

What actually happened was that Clyde survived the explosion - changed his name, got a new career and family and saved them from a world ending comet impact years later

i had read that, Clyde killed his cellmate so brutally becuz in the book, that cellmate murdered his wife and molested and killed his kids, so he served them justice. and then also to be transferred to isolation for obvious reasons :P

this is one of the most underrated movies ever. And what is funny originally Clyde was suppose to be played by Jamie Foxx. But before he signed on he asked if he could take the role of the DA and asked Gerald if he would play Clyde. No other changes, just switch those roles. Gerald Butler said ok, and they were off to the races. "Its going to be biblical." that is the coldest line ever IMO.
