In the beginning of the original movie script Cady actually mentions they'd been living in Namibia before going back to the US (it's a longer intro scene and she mentions they'd move around a lot cuz of her parents jobs) not sure why that didn't make the final version of the movie but alas. love this movie tho, it's a classic

“You’re only young for a short period of time.” That is so true, it feels only yesterday I was in high school having the time of my life with my friends, and I remember all those crazy times so vividly. That was over 20 years ago now, we all moved on to different places and followed different paths. When we all meet to catch up (which is rare), it’s like we all never left and we are still those crazy high school kids. It’s funny and so heartwarming how life can do that.

Because of my dad's job, I lived in Japan, Korea, Philippines, Okinawa, and Guam growing up. I moved to the US at around the same age as Cady. When asked "Where are you from?" I typically say "I grew up in Asia" instead of listing each off. Given Cady's parents are zoologist, they were likely studying animals in their habitats and may have lived In many regions of the continent over the course of Cady's life. If that's the case, it may make sense to say "Africa". It's also possible the movie may have deliberately used the continent instead of a nation because people in the US are not exactly the most geographically literate. I totally get where you're coming from though. I'm just offering a different perspective to consider for that context.
@caseyleo7299

Bingo. It's making fun of American ignorance by pointing it out. We are sadly one of the most illiterate nations when it comes to geography and culture.

She greets the Black hotties with "Jambo", which is Swahili for "Hello." In the flashback to her first crush the language is Afrikaans. I doubt this is lazy writing, but may be commentary on the lack of awareness of African cultures or to contested boundaries of countries in the 1990's.
@kejow.
@kejow. 6 ай бұрын
@@VS-re1srthose two different languages being shown makes it possible that Cady lived in at least two different African countries, so the comment hypothesis could be right then, right?! either way it's not a flaw from the writer, i think she's shown how good she was at pointing out these kind of things.

I'm not sure if this helps in any way (and seeing how the film is horribly vague on this information 😅), but the Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls places Cady's family as having previously lived in Kenya, rather than just generally Africa. Tina Fey, who was responsible for most of the screenplay of the film, also helped work on the stage adaptation. So, I guess this fact is somewhat canon to the lore of Mean Girls, albeit softly or loosely 😅.

@VS-re1sr
@VS-re1sr 7 ай бұрын
I do not think Cady was really blamed for all of the burn book, given that the teacher and love interest imply they know she was not the only author, she was in the principle's office when all of the photocopies were distributed, she would not have a yearbook from the last year, does not have 4 distinct styles of handwritting, would not know rumors about every girl in her grade already, some of the rumors had been updated before she started at the school...

I think they just said "Africa" because it seemed like her parents did something with animals and the natural life there, so she probably traveled a lot - hence why she was home schooled.

Ah times, as plots could have humour even of the (nowadays) iffy-kind. I sometimes feel my age when I think "Mean Girls", "Legally Blonde" and some others I'm lacking on, couldn't even be INTRODUCED like this in THESE DAYS! For better or worse, who knows? But there will always be a certain nostalgia to that with what one grows (up), right? 🤭 🤭

If you wanted to, you could probably make up a reason for her being "from Africa" instead of from any specific place--maybe her research zoologist parents tracked animals all over the continent and she went with them--but of course it was just a ridiculous thing to say and the writers didn't think twice about it, because it was just a device for Cady to be unfamiliar with American high schools. But it would have drawn less attention to itself if a person who grew up in a place had, you know, known the name of it. (Checking Google on the Ndebele vase, I guess SA or Zimbabwe.) But other than that, the dialogue is so snappy and cool... it really pops.

The characters saying Africa is a satirical joke about how insular Americans are so you're not wrong. We often buy into American exceptionalism and think we know more than we do despite our very obvious ignorance of the world outside our borders. Cady is treated like she's ignorant for not knowing the shallow culture of the high school world even though teacher and students demonstrate their own greater ignorance of the world at large. In other words, we dumb.

Janice is also just as bad as Regina she had Cady skip a class & made her go undercover because of falling out between her & Regina. those two are two sides of the same coin. the sad thing is though, this mentality doesnt stop in high school i have seen adult women with this same behavior

Lol, that is the hill I decided I was going to die on really recently!. Africa is too non-specific. I mean I do understand, people do say things like "she moved here from Europe" or "she moved here from asia", but not as often as people just are non-specific about Africa. Particularly in this case, I feel like her mom was a researcher so they moved around a lot and is there for "Africa" might be the most basic thing you can tell people without literally listing all the countries and places. But yes. It bothers me too. I looked up, and I think all of North America and all of Africa actually have about the same amount of square mileage. And people do say North american. Again that's just not as often!

Okay, I'm sorry but you can ABSOLUTELY just say "I grew up in Africa." if you, in fact, grew up in Africa. It's EXACTLY the same as me (a person who was born and raised in the USA) saying "I grew up in the USA." There's no need for anyone to pinpoint EXACTLY where they grew up if they don't want to. And she's not being racist by saying hello to them in that way when she saw black students in school, it was just what she was accustomed to seeing where she grew up in Africa and was trying to be friendly, not realizing she's in the US and they most likely wouldn't understand her. You get VERY judgemental lately and jump to so many conclusions before even knowing or hearing all the facts! You didn't use to be this way, I do hope you'll go back to watching things with a more open mind and heart like you used to, and not get so up in arms and offended over trivial things like this matter.

Sweetie, the United States is a country. Africa is a continent. I've never heard anyone say in a movie, 'I'm from North America." It's not that hard to name a specific country in Africa.

@killingloneliness88 - It is so important to listen to people when they speak about things - especially when we do not know. The ignorance filled in your rant by comparing a CONTINENT to a country - just weakens me. YOU LITERALLY SAMPLED MY CRITIQUE of that sentence. You ended helping me buttress and not the line in that movie. If only you had taken the time to think. What is sad is that you think comparing me to my early times would give me reason to pause. Then you go off on a tangent with insults - saddled with advice that you did not have the patience or fortitude to take. Hypocrisy at its finest. Thank you @TBwth for buttressing the point I was trying to make. It is people like you 'who listen and think' that make what I do enjoyable.

Just wanted to add that there's also over a thousand languages spoken across the continent of Africa, around 75 of which are spoken by significant numbers of people, so to assume someone speaks Swahili in particular (by saying Jambo) based on nothing other than their skin colour is pretty offensive, and a mistake that makes no sense for someone who's spent their whole life in "Africa", and would know better. Great movie but these bits have always bothered me, ignorance on the part of the script writers.

The only reason you say that is because americans think America and the USA are the same thing. I'm from Brazil, which is also in America. How do YOU feel about Brazilians, Mexicans, Cubans, etc saying we were born and grew up in America too? Also, you're comparing different things. The problem with saying "I grew up in Africa" is that it feeds into that misconception that African countries are all the same. Of course you, as someone from the USA, won't see a problem in that because you do the same with other people. You call us all "latin", even though I'm from Brazil and speak a totally different language from the one spoken by other Latin-American countries.

@@PB-nc9sbWhat? How is that ignorance? They showed Cady being ignorant and the other students reacting badly. They obviously know it's offensive, the joke is that the characters don't.
