Mean Girls Movie Description:
Teenage Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) was educated in Africa by her scientist parents. When her family moves to the suburbs of Illinois, Cady finally gets to experience public school and gets a quick primer on the cruel, tacit laws of popularity that divide her fellow students into tightly knit cliques. She unwittingly finds herself in the good graces of an elite group of cool students dubbed "the Plastics," but Cady soon realizes how her shallow group of new friends earned this nickname.
Mean Girls is a 2004 American teen comedy film directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey. The film stars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, and Fey. It is based in part on Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 non-fiction self-help book, Queen Bees and Wannabes, which describes female high school social cliques, school bullying, and the damaging effects they can have on students. Fey also drew from her own experience at Upper Darby High School as an inspiration for some of the concepts in the film. The plot centers on a naïve teenage girl navigating her way through the social hierarchy of a modern American high school after years of her parents homeschooling her while conducting research in Africa.
Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels produced the film. Tina Fey, screenwriter and co-star of the film, was a long-term cast member and writer for SNL. Although set in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, the film was mostly shot in Toronto. Filming took place from September to November 2003. The film marks Lohan's second collaboration with director Waters, the first being Freaky Friday, released a year earlier.
Released on April 30, 2004, the film grossed $130 million worldwide and developed a cult following. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised its direction, screenplay, humor, and performances; especially lauded was Lohan's acting, who earned several accolades including three Teen Choice Awards and three MTV Movie & TV Awards, and in 2021, was listed as the 11th-best performance of the 21st century by The New Yorker. The made-for-television sequel Mean Girls 2 premiered on ABC Family on January 23, 2011. A musical adaptation premiered on Broadway in March 2018.

Fun Fact originally Lindsay Lohan wanted to be Regina George because she didn't want to be typecast as always being the "good girl" and Rachel McAdams auditioned to be Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan's part) XD Also, it's really funny because at the beginning the one character says I heard Regina George's hair is insured for $10,000 dollars which is actually TRUE! Rachel McAdams wore a wig for Regina George because she didn't want to damage her own hair. The wig Rachel wore for Mean Girls was actually $10,000 XD

Being homeschooled really put me behind socially. I was bullied horribly when I went back to school to finish middle school and up. Many high school are like this. Even if you do manage to "not care what people think" in high school - you're still stuck with whatever kids are there for years. You can't just switch schools when you want as a minor. So the toxicity is very real because the kids have no choice but to coexist.

Rachael McAdams did this movie AND The Notebook in THE SAME YEAR. Still killin' it as Christine in Doctor Strange. ❤❤ To add, i had a really good time in HS, but i was lucky and i knew it then, academically, socially, etc. I was the goth chick who clique-hopped in the lunch room, with no shame. Our cliques were fairly casual, anyway, we're such a small city. I had friends all over the place, and i never had the bad teachers. 😆 even i didn't escape unscathed, though. Glad to have graduated and got the EFF out. We dealt with a "burn book" situation senior year. It was actually a rate book, and no one got in a physical fight, but it did cause major drama.

To answer your question, this movie was based on the non-fiction book "Queen Bees and Wannabees" on toxic femininity. Most of the events in the movie are based on real incidents recorded in the book, involving different people. Tina Fey gathered all the stories and put them in a movie. If I remember correctly, the whole "on Wednesdays we wear pink" was a rule taken verbatim from the book.

What I never used to realise is that Janis is actually one of the mean girls. She's just as bad as Regina or maybe even worse because she manipulates and uses Cady for her own gain and then blames her when it doesn’t work out.

One of the things I like about this movie which even with all the craziness keeps it realistic Regina never said sorry, never apologized or admitted to what she did or that it was wrong and in reality, bullies never do apologize, the best you get is that they stop and you move on with your lives. Movies now never keeps it real like that anymore which we know bcs in the recent remake of this movie Regina does admit she was wrong

So I’m regards to school dress code my mother told me when she moved to Cali from NYC as a teen she was stunned because the girls in her highschool would wear crop tops and boys boxers and sandals to school. It was so normalized that they literally would ask my mom all the time if it was her birthday because she was “dressed up” to their standard lol

I was convinced that HS was like this before I actually went. I feel like the clique mentality from pre 2000s high school has kind of fizzled out, but shows and movies still use it as a story device. Sure, people had their group of friends, but it was a lot more diverse than just being a nerd or being a jock or being a stoner. Everyone kind of just hung with everyone. The burn book though actually did happen at my school. Someone made it and dropped it in the girls bathroom and it was 100x worse than anything said in this movie lol. And the principal also allowed everyone who was in it to read their parts to try and figure out who wrote it, which they never did.

I graduated in 06 and our highschool was very cliquey, though people weren't generally antagonistic. But us band nerds didn't intermingle with the choir crowd, for instance. (Funny enough, we had more crossover with the jocks and cheerleaders because of the band being at all football events)

@@MFBloosh Yeah, our school was very small and one of the big social divides was between people who lived in the city limits and could probably see each other's houses from the front yard, and everyone else
