After losing a match in the early '90s, instead of rioting and setting the streets on fire, Sheffield Wednesday FC soccer fans sang "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and it has since become the unofficial anthem of losing soccer teams in England.

We can thank George Harrison of the Beatles for this one, as he paid for the majority of it. As he really wanted to see it, as one of of the Pythons said “he paid for the biggest movie ticket in history.” As for the controversy, the Pythons knew it was going to happen, but they didn’t quite understand it. They weren’t making fun of Jesus. Or even attacking what he said. They were making fun of the people who follow blindly and take everything out of context, the type of his followers who hear what they want to hear.

Weirdly, the only group that was actually offended by the movie for actual reasons were Orthodox Jews who were merely upset that in the stoning scene John Cleese lets the prayer shawl he wears touch the ground. That was the only real religious offense and they did apologize for that one thing.

@@shoujahatsumetsu Yes, the C of E were publicly offended but they had no legitimate complaints about the satire presented in the film because it isn't about Jesus or the organizing principles behind the C of E.. The Pythons actually apologized about the prayer shawl because they were making fun of the logic involved in blindly trusting faith. They were not intending to insult or mock any given religion. There's a short documentary about it on the special edition DVD that your local library may have availible.

I knew George Harrison financed L of B, and he's in the scene where the crowd is looking for a healing. But, I didn't know until recently that several rock stars ... members of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson financed Holy Grail.

When Monty Python worked for BBC they had a contract that said they absolutely couldn't show "full frontal nudity" on their show. They found this wording so funny, it became an inside joke, and I think there is even an episode of flying cicus that revolves around not showing nudity. Anyway, when they did their movies they weren't bound by that contract, so they made sure to include one shot of full frontal nudity just for the hell of it.

This is my favorite Monty Python movie. I took a religion class years ago and it became even funnier when I knew some of the more subtle or inside jokes. Also, I think the part with the space ship is a nod toward the common idea that at least Ezekiel (and probably Elijah and Enoch) saw and/or were taken up in space ship(s).

One thing about this movie: You could put twenty Classicists or Classical Historians into a room, and ask them all what their favorite part of this movie is. Based on that one answer, you can tell almost everything about their personalities immediately based on modern historian archetypes. And if any one of them say they didn't like the movie, kindly but firmly ask them to leave.

Not sure if it's true, but I read somewhere that they put the UFO bit in because, at the time they were making this, sci-fi films like Star Wars were really popular. Incidentally, Terry Jones (who played Brian's mother) was a well-respected historian of early English history (maybe I should have added this under the Holy Grail reaction). A little known fact - because at the time, Britain was a hopeless backwater (and certainly isn't now, oh no, not in the least) this film was banned in a number of places, including the Welsh town of Aberystwyth until '09. It was lifted in that year because, of all reasons, the actor who played Judith became mayor, and she decided to stop the ban.

This was banned from some movie theaters here in the UK. John Cleese and Micheal Palin went on a discussion show to argue the case that it is not blasphemous. 2 religious guys were trying to trap them with words but failed miserably. The movie highlights just how easy it is to start a religion, even by mistake, and how sheep-like people can be especially if they're born into a religion. Calling Jesus a "bloody do gooder" shows how the Jews rejected Jesus, and when john Cleese said "I should know, I've followed a few" is taken from the bible which says that many had came before claiming to be the Messiah. At the end of the day, it's not about Jesus, it's about some poor sod who didn't ask for all the attention. You'll find many Brits quoting lines from this movie. It's a classic. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Okay, but what IS so funny about Biggus Dickus?! Watching that scene without laughing is like trying to eat a sugared donut without licking your lips - it’s not possible! 😁 Holy Grail was almost a stream-of-consciousness thing, a series of sketches strung together on a very thin plot, whereas Life of Brian is more narrative and certainly more satirical, but both are absolutely hilarious and uniquely British. I mean, how much more British can you get that singing “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” while on the cross? Life’s a piece of shit, but what can you do but have a laugh? And yes, it did get a lot of criticism from religious circles, but mostly because of its reputation rather than anything specific. Most of the stuff in the film is actually quite respectful because the Pythons realised that there wasn’t much about Jesus that could be lampooned - his teachings were pretty morally sound. The structure of organised religion that was built up around such teachings, though… THAT was a worthy target and the film absolutely skewers it!

I remember Christians (I am one mind you) being offended by this. But after paying attention and reading what Monty Python said about the movie, it changed my view on it. They said they read about Jesus and found him to be a good person and thus could not make fun of him. So instead the concept was simply Brian was being followed instead of Jesus do to a mix up. I mean my beliefs aside, I can see how some people can easily think some random person is someone they are not. Not to get political, but the fact so many essentially worshipped a certain blond haired president as being "sent by God" just disgusted me. Why would God send someone that is the opposite of Jesus, to be president? Think people!
