An explanation of the "Barney... Rubble... Trouble!" bit. Its called "cockney rhyming slang". It was developed by British prisoners so they could talk infront of the guards. Its usually 3 words and the 3rd rhymes with the real word and shorthand you can just say the first. Example, "Bees and Honey" is money. So instead of saying "give me the money", you could say "Give me the bees." Also, "apples and pears" is stairs, stuff like that.

And then there's Dimwell. Dimwell Arrhythmic Rhyming Slang (DARS) is the only rhyming slang, anywhere, that does not rhyme and in fact is very carefully devised to avoid creating any rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, internal or external assonance, or anything even remotely resembling or which might be mistaken for poetic structure. As with all rhyming slang, it has been speculated that this is mainly to annoy or confuse outsiders

Some Cockney slang has worked its way into common English idioms. For example, saying giving a "raspberry" to mean booing originated as Cockney slang (raspberry tart rhymed with fart).

My favorite bit of trivia: The ending scene at the fountain was partially improvised. Saul's actor, Carl Reiner, was instructed to leave last, but the the rest of them were told to leave whenever it felt natural.

"It kinda seems like maybe it was Ocean that did something wrong here and not her." Yes, the scene where he's released from prison and the scene where they talk about prison does imply that.

The reason the contrast is so high is the cinematographer was going for a black and white film look. They were trying to recreate the visual feel of the original movie but in color. This is also why they use 60's era transitions and multi-panel shots.

Nobody thought that this "Rat Pack" classic would be revamped into a franchise. I saw the 1960's original before the remake came out. Also it re-established the 'Heist Comedy' that the original had first introduced. Great cast. One of the best ensembles ever. They all had such a good time working together. Going by the 'behind the scenes' footage and interviews. The most recent installment was the spinoff, Ocean's 8 (2018) and it was unexpectedly good. But work your way through Ocean's 12 & 13 first. RIP to the legends, Bernie Mac (Frank Catton), Carl Reiner (Saul Bloom) and Jerry Weintraub (lead producer of the Ocean's Trilogy, 2001-2007).

10/10 One of my all-time favorites There is just something about this movie that makes it so great. There's nothing truly outstanding about any one aspect of the movie; nothing that will blow you away. However, everything is put together perfectly. Personally, I have a theory that any movie that absolutely blows you away the first time you see it, will lose its entertainment value very quickly. Not necessarily because the movie was not good, but because it just seems to get old too fast. This is NOT one of those movies. This is the kind of movie that will be enjoyed countless times. The dialogue is slick, and always to the point. There are few (if any) overdone scenes and/or lines that tend to become annoying over time. This movie flows exceptionally well. Personally, I couldn't quite figure out why until I watched the "behind the scenes" footage on the DVD. I didn't really notice all of the work they put into using as few shots as possible. The extra features on the DVD really explain it all. Almost every scene uses considerably less shots than you would think it takes to convey all of the activity going on. The music punctuates the flow of the movie and the shots extremely well. The cast is almost all big names. It's great to see actors like Pitt and Clooney and Damon come together in a movie and interact so well, without having to be the pretty boys or bad-ass heroes of the movie.

My husband and I are OBSESSED with the whole OCEAN’S Saga O.11, O.12 and O.13 !!! As far as we’re concerned this is an iconic movie, iconic cast and just an all around ICONIC movie/movies. And just a small fact that no one asked for lol…. Our 16 yr old son’s middle name is OCEAN! Yes after this movie. People ask us all the time if we gave him the middle name Ocean because we live on the Southern Oregon Coast 😂…. And we’re like “ Nah Beeesh, he’s named after Daniel Ocean “. And they’re like but his first name is Niko…. And again we only gave him Ocean as his middle name. We got his first name NIKO from MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING! And they’re you have my gorgeous son Niko Ocean !!! Our friends and family may argue that we’re a tad obsessed with TV and MOVIES… and ya know what I say to them, “ Mind ya BIZ NAZ”. And after 49 hours of labor, than an emergency C-section… 🥵😵‍💫. They’re actually lucky, ‘cause if the hubby had his way, he woulda been named MICHAEL CORLEONE! (The Godfather). Lmao. The reunion series for That 70s was probably one of the better ones - it understood some of the fans were already adults back when the show was on and we are the older folks now - and they gave us some great moments with Kitty and Red now that it's harder to identify with the teen plotlines.

high contrast was kind of the thing of that time. from Matrix in 1999 to CSI in 2001, to BSG in 2003, many productions were calibrated for dark environments, so their night shots (or, space, in BSG) were correctly lit, and anything brighter than a soft light would appear over-lit. BSG had their space shots evenly lit, even though it's supposed to be pitch-black out there, but they needed that extra light to make the ship noticeable (which itself is dark, as opposed to something like the Enterprise, or a Star Destroyer, which are white) so, they rose the whole scale of light and the interior shots are over-lit.

The "Pish Posh" he was speaking is "Cockney rhyming slang" spoken by working class Londoners, called 'Cockneys' (think Jason Statham). Traditionally, it was used as a code to fool the Police so they didn't know what they were saying. Each word means something else based on a word it rhymes with. For example... Barney (Rubble) = Trouble Apple and Pears = Stairs ("I'm just going to quickly run up the apple and pairs for a minute") Half inched = Pinched (meaning 'stolen') Box of toys = Noise Butcher's (hook) = Look ("I'm going to have a butchers at that casino", etc)

When he says "barney. Barney Rubble. Trouble!" He is using something called Cockney Rhyming Slang. It was common in a certain part of London around 1900 and has remained a part of English and Australian slang, although it is much less common now. It involves taking some well known thing and substituting its meaning for something it rhymes with. In this case Barney Rubble (a character from the Flinstones) means "trouble" as it rhymes. Another example. At dinner I might say "could you pass the dead horse" which actually means "Could you pass the sauce" because "dead horse" rhymes with "sauce." My personal favourite is instead of saying "let's hit the road," you would say "let's hit the frog and toad" or even just "frog." Just imagine it as a secret language developed so that other people have no idea what you're talking about, which is why it was created by criminals, yet it simultaneously became poetic and incredibly creative.

4:08 Oliver Stone saw an unfinished cut of Orson Wells's THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND in 1989 and ripped off his use of different film stocks to make JFK in 1991. Soon, just about every filmmaker in the 1990s was experimenting with mixed film grades to get different lighting & color effects. Most movies of the late 90s used weird lighting/film contrasts to make their stuff look interesting. Then digital color grading became a thing and people started shooting movies flat and then altering their entire color & contrast schemes in post. But Soderberg loved mixing film stocks and lighting effects around this time and just about all of his stuff from 1997-2007 looks like this. It WAS shot on film because the full-digital HD cameras didn't come out until 2002 and that was for George Lucas almost exclusively. Even then they maxed out at 2K. So people didn't really use HD cameras for feature-film shooting until about 2010. In the trailer there was a joke during the parole board where the board member asked him "What type of work would you consider pursuing upon your release?" and he says "I dunno. How much do you make in a year?" But the line was cut from the finished film because an advisor pointed out that a parolee would be immediately rejected for giving that answer.

This was definitely shot on film, not digital - it says right on the imdb page: Panavision Panaflex Millennium XL. To me the high contrast lighting looks fairly natural, perhaps thinking otherwise is a result of being raised with washed-out sepia or blue/orange dimmed digital movies.

What guy in prison would say he would commit a crime again and still expect to get out? Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. Side note, he didn't actually have any birds when he was at Alcatraz. He got the nickname Birdman for the birds he kept at he previous prison (Leavenworth, I think. ) His last parole hearing before he died, he stated that he needed to be paroled because there were people he needed to kill and he didn't think he had much time left. The man was brutally honest. He was arrested when he went into a police station and told the officers that he had just killed a man over a matter of $50. He neglected to mention that the man he killed was attacking a woman, and Stroud stepped in to protect her.

Well, this is a first. I chimed in to let you know that you mis-identified the African American actor (not Bernie Mac) as the guy who played the principal in Mean Girls. That was actually former SNL alumni Tim Meadows. Seriously, who else could play next epic former SNL comedian Tina Fey, but another good SNL actor. Anyway, I got it wrong too. I thought it was Al Johnson Jr. who played Bennie the Mars Taxicab Driver in 1990's Total Recall. Actually, it was Iron Man's Top Military Level Buddy, Don Cheadle. Surprised he did not get a screen credit for this movie. You are completely right about it being chocked full of familiar faces. Thanks to doing a deep dive in the entire actor list, I found that Charmed regular Holly Marie Combs is also in this movie. I will be damned if I know where she is, thinking Casino Blackjack Dealer. Guess I am going to have see this one again, because I missed so much.
