"That guy is not as dead as I was previously led to believe" had me laughing so much. Really enjoyed your reaction, well done. Respect to you for watching Alien 3 and resurrection, I know a lot of people don't like them. I quite liked resurrection but was disappointed with the final creature. I thought Prometheus was ok, but thought the story (Engineers and them killing everything) wasn't the best. But I was impressed with the visuals although the tech in comparison to Alien seemed more advanced. I enjoyed the film as being separate from Alien myself, it didn't feel like an Alien film except for the large scenes like in the ships hold in Alien when Kane abseils in. Looking forward to your Covenant reaction. (Tremors as well.)

For me it's the sheer stupidity of some of the characters that lets it down.. Idris Elba with "sleep tight boys.." they are your crew and they're lost outside! The geologist guy who "likes rocks" and would rather not be a team player or a general astronaut/scientist.. The guy slowly getting closer to something that looks CLEARLY like a cobra and ends up getting killed by it.. The fact they get "lost" inside the thing in the first place when they have a perfect 3D scan of it!? It's an OK film but most of the characters are just fodder that do stupid/unbelievable things. Dr Shaw being "pregnant" is a pretty awesome horror moment though
@andrewforbes14332 жыл бұрын
I don't merely dislike this film and its sequel. I despise them. There are the standard criticisms - that the characters act irrationally and inconsistently only to move the plot ahead; that the motivations of certain characters are nonsensical; that the plots are half-baked - and I wholeheartedly agree with those criticisms. My primary objection to the films, however, is that they are conceptually misguided. The Alien franchise, at least through Alien3, is founded on the unknown. The universe of Alien felt vast, and old, and dark. Ridley Scott, for reasons I still fail to comprehend, chose to make two films that are designed to shine a floodlight into all the dark corners of that universe, and provide answers to questions that existed to be left unanswered. I think that these are very poor films but, more than that, I resent their makers' intentions. EDIT: And, oh crap, you're doing Shadow Of A Doubt?! I Cannot wait!

I have described this as "The best looking, most beautiful 1950s scifi B movie ever made." Every scientist in this movie is dumb as a rock. But honestly, what we did we expect from it? The LEAD scientists of this movie are literally creation scientists, so portraying them as dumb as rocks makes sense. So, I LOVE watching this movie, how it looks, and Fassbender's performance as David, but otherwise, it's just so very, very dumb with a bunch of beautiful set pieces.
@broadsword66502 жыл бұрын
@@jobbo_ The original story made it clear that Theron's character deliberately hired some of these "stupid" scientists in an attempt to sabotage her father's scheme, which she regarded as a vanity project and a massive waste of money (and his attempt to cheat death denied her inheritance of the company). This detail was totally lost in the rewrites, and it makes the film ridiculous. As a viewer I found it insulting to my intelligence that supposedly top scientists characters would be so utterly dumb and incompetent because it was never explained that they were, in fact, a bunch of Z-list hacks hired on the cheap. That's bad filmmaking from Ridley Scott, who is excellent at visuals but often falls down on the plot.

The scene when David contaminates that drink always struck me as a question people really should consider more. I love the way it is shot with that Christmas tree sitting in the background, as though it is saying, "You want an answer? There's a possible one right here." Made me wonder what it would take. Many look for that answer, but if they won't except the possibilities already there, what would it take for them to accept the next one?

This movie was Ridley Scott idea of a pre-quel to Alien. The dead Engineer in Alien was an Engineer, like the one in the Captian Chair here. It's too bad you didnt get the Director's cut version where they played like a 10 min long conversation between David and the Engineer. That answers a lot of questions. Scott chose to cut it from the final version, but you can find it here. This was LV..something but next to LV426 in Alien so the same system. The Engineers did match our DNA, that what Shawn found out doing the DNA sample from the Engineers head in the helmet. Scott was supposed to be making another Alien movie this past year but arguments with Disney ended up in getting it cut. Too bad my favorite movie series.

Really funny thing about this movie is that when it was first released, pretty much everyone assumed that all the bad stuff in it was Damon Lindeloff's fault due to Lost having just aired its extremely controversial finale, while Ridley Scott is of course a legend that we were all ecstatic to see come back to the franchise after a lifetime. Except in the years since, Lindeloff has greatly improved his reputation with The Leftovers and Watchmen while Scott has...not, let's just say, and word has also come out that a lot of complaints people had weren't present in Lindeloff's original script which Scott forced a bunch of changes on. Add in his even worse work in Alien: Covenant and these days the blame is apportioned completely the other way.

At one point it was a intended as a prequel to "Alien", then senile old Ridders changed his mind - despite the fact the Engineers have a full bodied relief art work figure of the classic xenomorph in their ship - something which apparently doesn't even exist yet. We went in hoping for a prequel about the xenomporh and what we got was some garbled nonsense about black goo, snakes and dolphin aliens. Prometheus is where it all started to go wrong and where every studio exec just accepted that Ridley "Where's my pudding?" Scott was the man in charge of the Aliens Universe. Opinion certainly is divided on this one! I am on the side that says it's bad, due to, among other things, the stupidity and unlikability of the characters, the inanity of the 'ancient aliens' plot element, and the needless rewrite of Alien lore. The sequel is perhaps worse in some respects, but I enjoyed it more because it was just a straightforward horror movie (and a couple of the bad moments are downright hilarious). BTW, there was a trailer for Covenant called "She won't go quietly", which I recommend you watch -- it looks like a totally different movie! I don't know if you have seen Alien vs Predator yet? At the beginning of the film, there are lots of references to Christmas. One major plot point was supposed to be that the Engineers created humanity, loved humanity, sent an Engineer to educate humans and humans crucified and killed the teacher Engineer, causing the Engineers to view humanity as a failed violent experiment that needed to be destroyed. Yep, Christ was an alien Engineer. The alien Engineer civilization collapsed before they could destroy humanity. This would have been interesting, especially the heartbreak of finding “god” only to discover that god wants to destroy you. However, the studio nixed the idea of declaring Jesus as an alien.

The main points I don't like about this film are: 1) The two scientists with the snake alien, the one who reaches out to touch it. Scientist should know better than that. In the first film "Alien", at least the guy reached out to touch the egg and bent over to look inside it, wasn't a scientist. 2) Shaw has an abdomen operation then she is running and jumping around. 3) As in many movies, people are running to get out of the way of something narrow falling toward them, yet they run in the direction the narrow thing is falling instead of running 90 degrees away from it. What I like is that the special effects in this film are spectacular and the final alien is terrifying.

My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship is shipping ore.Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years,when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs. One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen,and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then a war breaks out.All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship.Then they nuke the planet from orbit. Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins.They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship.But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing.Then Weyland-Yutani get's a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there.They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born. Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life. They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life.After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs,they drops them on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die.Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives prolongued life.But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the population out,pursue them and manages to get the elixir back,but gets trapped on the planet where both parties crash.Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life for thousands of years,but they are now trapped on the planet,with no means to get anywhere.But then they see a light aproaching,but is the spaceship friends or foes ?

I think you really missed the importance of the title sequence. By consuming the black goo, it essentially broke down the engineers DNA and replicated it based off the characteristics of that planet. You can see this in the title sequence as the DNA breaks down and reforms in the flow of the river. They essentially were terraforming, but instead of designing the planet to fit, they designed the life to fit instead. It probably wouldn't have changed your opinion on the movie overall, but the movie did directly show that the engineers seeded the planet earth with DNA

Ok, so now that you have watched all the films in the series that I have watched, I'll give you a few of my insights after 25+ years of being a fan, and multiple re-watchings. Broadly speaking, in my opinion the films are a commentary on evolution. Starting with Human Evolution in the first film. Instead of an "Alien" movie where the Alien comes down from space to invade earth, and us having to fight it off to prove our evolutionary superiority... Instead, this time WE are the Alien, coming down in our spaceship, to disturb things and screw with the "native wildlife" (in our own human way). And... it turns out it's actually something that can challenge us. And this allows it to explore the darkest impulses of human instinct, in a super subtle, but really deep and insightful way. If you just look on the surface it's a monster movie. But if WE are the Alien... It allows us to see us contend with our own dark hidden intentions and motivations, the will to survive, the "monster"... that exists within all of us. Secondly, the men in the ship are shown as being old, stubborn, outdated in their thinking, and despite having made an artificial robot "man"... When confronted with this new threat, they are no longer able to adapt to the new situation. Ripley is the only one on the ship who is able to think rationally and clearly about the situation, and I think the subtext is one about women being the ones who are evolved enough, or evolving to be able to do things that the men could not. And so the most dangerous of all the "Aliens" on the ship, was the woman... Which is kind of a badass stamp of approval for Ripley. So if the first film is commentary on human evolution.... The second is about the begining ideas of motherhood, The idea of having a child (newts character), and the "monstrous" societal pressure that puts on you as a woman, living in a world where war is a reality. And kicking that psychological demon to the curb (and then some). The third film is about Woman's relationship with Man. Having to come to grips with the "monsters" you both are, so that you can work towards a common goal. And one that isn't just solely centered around "procreating". The Fourth film is about motherhood and Abortion. I won't get much deeper into it than that, but it completely changes the subtext of a few scenes once you realize it. And then Prometheus, which kind of takes us back for a second go at human evolution. This time showing us the folly of hubris, rather than of naive innocence. And does a pretty spectacular job of it. People at the time didn't really like Prometheus, but I think it stands up. I actually liked all of them for their own reasons. Are they perfect? No, but entertaining nonetheless. More movies in this genre? Alien vs Predator Pitch Black Event Horizon And Thank You for the great reaction!

Interesting thoughts. I don't agree with you, but interesting nevertheless.

@@broadsword6650 It's probably because I'm looking at it from a more philosophical perspective than most people do. What does everything mean? Why were certain creative, artistic or directional decisions made? Or Why did we even need to tell ourselves this story to begin with? Etc. Of course I also have an appreciation for it as a blockbuster monster flick, right up there with The Thing, Or The Mist, etc. Things just tend to stand out more every time I rewatch it. Or when I try to view it through the historical perspective of why we (as a species), needed to tell ourselves this story, when we did, and how we did. Like, in the context of what was going on in the world at the time? What other movies came out around this time, what we're people thinking, how did the movie change things etc. Ripley is held up as one of the all time female badass movie roles of all time. I just think she deserves the credit. I think they did a good job. You should hear what I think about, The Terminator, The Exorcist, or V for Vendetta lol! (Stockholm Syndrome) (Catholic Propaganda) (Lesbian Power Fantasy) LoL 🤣 I've got plenty of other interesting takes that will make you think! If I had time or knew how I'd probably write essays or make videos. Maybe someday. Thanks for checking out my crazy theories!

I love sci-fi, and always have so don't take this the wrong way, but I have one simple question for these scientists about their theory on the origin of life. Who engineered the engineers?
@changsangma19152 жыл бұрын
There are certain theory and alternative lore regarding who is the original Space Jockey- apparently called the Mala'kak giants....a very ancient race that mastered superior organic manipulation to bio-mechanical manifestation. And are believed to be the creators of Engineers...who later in their own evolutionary line of techno supremacy wanted to mirror the tech of their creators, hence the design similarity of their space ships.
@captaincell2 жыл бұрын
@@changsangma1915 I understand that there are fictional theories, but I was referring to real life. It's easy to believe that an alien race could have put us here, if we don't have any real world understanding about the discoveries scientists have made over the last 60 or 70 years. Especially when those discoveries aren't understood for what they actually revealed. For example, most people think the Big Bang Theory is science's way of removing God from the equation, when in fact The Big Bang Theory, or a single point of origin, is proof that God exists. It doesn't prove that the god of the Bible exist, which is why scientists chose the term intelligent design. In a different comment I reference the book, that actually explains how we got here. Written by a scientist, not a theologian.
@changsangma19152 жыл бұрын
@@captaincell .....my response was aptly put in the context of your question "who engineered the engineers?" Meaning you asked about the narrative of the movie's story. But what you intended for your actual context doesn't align into the narrative of your question. If you want to argue about real world context for the question of creationism your question need to be straight forward not in a contextual loop. TBS your question doesnt really relate to the said topic and is best kept in forums of ancient alien conspiracies.
@captaincell2 жыл бұрын
@@changsangma1915 I'm not sure how to respond to that, other than I think the question is relative, when millions of people see this movie and think, yeah that sounds plausible, and besides real science hasn't come up with anything more plausible, when in fact, it has.

I saw an interview with Guy Pearce and he said he was cast instead of an older actor because the screenplay originally had flashback scenes of a younger Weyland. Those scenes got cut so Pearce only appears in aging makeup that took hours to apply.

I saw this in theaters as an Alien fan and walked away pretty underwhelmed. As the years went on, also while remembering it's set before the first film tho not much of a direct Alien prequel, I began to love it. I've re watched it more than most films I ever have, I just love all of the messages that the story has when it comes to discovery, creation, mortality and at times God. I do think it could've been better, my expectations were insanely high and there were so many possibilties that coulda been explored that were just not touched enough. Prometheus: Paradise would've expanded upon it. Unfortunately, we got Covenant instead.

This movie has some great atmosphere and creature effects. From a purely technical standpoint, it’s a marvel of filmmaking. The negatives, though… You almost expect scientists in Hollywood films to not know how scientists should behave, and ignoring quarantine procedure is a trope in Alien films, but this pushes that to extremes. Taking off their helmets, getting up close with alien lifeforms without any protections. Every one of them is beyond stupid. You have to kind of connect the dots (or just read comments made by Ridley Scott about it), but the engineers wanted to kill humans because they created us, then sent us a teacher 2000 years ago and we killed him. That’s right, they are mad at us because we killed space Jesus. The alien abortion scene is pretty intense, but then the machine just closes the incisions with a few giant staples. In the next scenes she is running, jumping, climbing, etc. Girl, your abdominal muscles were just cut in half!

Yes, the plot is thin and somewhat ridiculous, but I think the main problem with Prometheus is there's no emotional connection. There are all these characters and I didn't care about any of them. There's also a feeling of inevitability about it. You know just about everyone is going to die. The only question is how gross is it going to be! There are some interesting ideas, but not enough to carry a whole film on their own. For me to like a film, it either needs a great plot or characters I connect with, preferably both. Prometheus had neither. Loved your reaction though!

They called them face huggers. I liked this movie simply because I love the Sci fi-ness of it. But there were certainly a lot that could be ridiculed. Such as a bunch of scientists removing their helmets in an alien environment without any containment or quarantine process and not worrying about picking up alien pathogens or bacteria. And med pods that are gender locked is so bizarre and defies logic.

It has such great concepts, yet lacks sooo much understanding of basic science that it makes the film almost unwatchable for me.
