Japan's economy crashed hard in the 90s. This movie is trying to capture the hopelessness people felt during that time. In fact, a lot of J-Horror was inspired by this hopelessness. That's why this genre exploded then, and they were each about as hopeless and depressing. This film reigning as king amongst them. This film actually works on many levels. It was the 90s and everything was falling apart, people included. Many people retreated into themselves and yet they've just been introduced to this new technology that's supposed to help connect us all. And yet they reject connection, or rather, what connection they can get from this online world is false and just makes them feel more alone. And they just keep retreating into themselves, until they can't take it anymore. A lot of people took their lives at that time. Sad that this movie is still topical to this day.

What I don't understand is why they apply that hopelessness to the youth, they have so much to live for, so little pressure, and don't give me crap excuses like peer pressure and loneliness, compare that to the middle-aged people who have to support a family.

Pulse is one of those movies I'll never forget. It's been about a decade since I first saw it, and I've still never thought "Hmm, I'm in the mood to watch Pulse today!" 🤣 But it's undeniably an absolutely amazing film.

Saw this movie when I was a kid and I will never get that scene of the ghost woman slowly walking out of my head. I remember being so terrified I couldn't even reach for the remote to turn it off. The way she walks is just so inhuman I can't even describe why it's so scary.

I like it when Jack tells Will that he must watch. "Watch it! You've got to watch it!', you are the cutest duo. This film has always confused me but they do talk about being lonely. I have found that the internet brings me so much more connection than I had growing up in the 60s/70s without it. You don't know what loneliness is till you have to go make friends by going to a disco or a church, I'm good with neither of those things.

I'm glad you guys got to watching this! Really this movie's basic premise is the philosophy of connection, and the way in which the more we're connected with technology and resting on technology to keep us connected, the more disconnected we actually become. Done through the forum of the supernatural it leaves a very chilled, empty feeling. The more you watch it the more you become reconciled with the latter half. I love how they managed to empty Tokyo without us even noticing. I believe the Japanese culture character you mention man is NEET. As an aside the moment when the guy was saying "help me" right in your ears as his friend stared into the camera.. I managed to land a copy of the film from Hong Kong, in 5.1.. and that sound is right up in the rear speakers, so dry that it sounds like he's behind the sofa!

If you wanna get back to J-Horror sometime without going down the path of the endless Ring/Ju-On sequels or spin-offs, I definitely recommend the original 'One Missed Call' (Chakushin Ari). It's back more towards the 'Ju-On' scale of things, where that and 'One Missed Call' are scare-heavy "popcorn horror" with deeper themes as opposed to 'Pulse' which is almost more of an arthouse horror flick. At the height of the J-Horror craze OMC was the third most popular horror series in Japan after Ring and Ju-On.

Love this film! So underrated. Give Uzumaki(there's also some animated shorts coming to Adult Swim soon which is based on the manga, rather than the film), Suicide Club and Tale of Two Sisters a go too! Oh, and Ichi the Killer. My friend who DJ'd at a club persuaded them to let him use their huge screen to put on Korean film nights and I saw so many good films over the space of one summer. I haven't heard this film mentioned in about 15 years so this is a proper blast from the past for me.

really interesting how cultural differences from different countries produce unique movies like this. like they have their own unique aspects of horror like the jumpscares, plot, cinematography, and so on. when it comes to american horror movies which i think majority of us are familiar with, it's always predictable but that's still part of the uniqueness. that's why j horror typically throw us off. reminds me of how the internet from china is different compared to rest of the world because internet there blocks access to rest of the globe. they have their own memes and etc. and i believe there was a study conducted regarding this.

Will you be posting the full reaction for patreon users? I'd love to see your entire reaction, I love this movie. It's one of the few horror movies I've seen that's really got to me (and I watch a LOT of horror movies). That scene with the girl walking towards the camera was so well-crafted it's crazy. The fake-out where you think she's gonna break out into a sudden sprint but goes slower instead just builds up a kinda tension that makes the scene so much more off-putting and freaky. Still gives me chills... If you want to watch something kind of silly there's actually a movie called Sadako vs. Kayako that you might be interested in. It's basically like Freddy vs. Jason but it's a fight between the girl from Ring and the girl from The Grudge. It's not exactly an amazing movie but it's pretty good for what it is lol The Wailing is also a good Korean movie you may want to check out sometime.

this movie is about dread and lost of connection. where people use the internet to connect.. technology to connect, we end up more disconnected. and the dread and epiphany is - we are nothing in this world.. but a stain on a wall.. thats all.. japan had a lot of movies about dread and being insignificant.

I just love J-Horror for the most part because they are generally more about a hidden message that is fun to figure out with your friends or others. Most horror movies nowdays is generally quick scare fests that don't garner much attention afterwords. I suppose movies like Kairo/Noroi are outdated in that sense since most people hate talking to each other and films like these pretty much need conversations outside of the initial experience. Thats where most of the true joy comes out of early 2000s j-horror.

The red tape room summons the ghost. In the American remake the red tape blocks the ghosts. The ghosts steal your will to live. For a good j horror movie -"Reincarnation"- probably one if the best j horrors of all time. And almost nobody knows about it.

No. The color red has significant spiritual meaning in Japanese folklore. It's used to ward off or expel negative spiritual influences. They're taping the doors and windows in red to ward off or trap the spirits. The difference in the remake is that red is supposedly a "frequency" they can't move through...which makes no sense at all.
