I don't know how realistic the story is, given how upsetting it would have been to the other patients and guards to have this guy running around, but I liked it! At the end, I think he's done remembering. It's too much for him, and he doesn't want to live with the things he's done or the things that have happened to him. I think he's ready for the lobotomy and probably hopes that they take out the worst of his memories.

I had to watch this film in the theater twice to not only to get the full picture of the reveal but also pick up on things that I didn't pick up on the first time I saw it. I was so immersed subjectively as Leo's character that I felt what he felt when the revelation came. I felt as though the rug was pulled out from under me. "No one can erase all of man's memories." Was what Andrew said to the Rachel in the cave. My interpretation is that when he said "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" He was not delusional in that moment and conscious enough to know that he no longer wanted to live as the monster he felt he was who failed his children and put them in danger and also the monster who shot his wife dead for downing their children. The lobotomy I felt was the one thing that Would erase those memories. Yes physically he'd still be alive But he mentally he wouldn't have to live as that monster. He'd be gone. I believed the lobotomy was in fact his suicide. A way to stop that loop and put himself out of that misery of living in that loop of delusion from not being able to face the reality of his life. I know it was the lobotomy given that they showed an insert shot of the ice pick wrapped in the cloth that the orderly was carrying.

Remember that scene, at the gates of Ashcliffe? Laeddis and Sheehan are ordered to relinquish their "firearms." Sheehan struggles to undo his holster, while Laeddis (being a marshal) does it with no problem. If you rewatch this movie, try to look at Leo's face when this happens. For a brief moment, he seems lucid, like he knows he is out of place and the something is wrong. Great acting from DiCaprio. Also, in almost all prisons and mental hospitals, prisoners and mental patients are banned from carrying matches, so that's why Laeddis has to keep asking for a light and never seems to have matches on him.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon. It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again. As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”. No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world. An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

There are subtle hints throughout about the truth: #1: The opening scene where Teddy/Leadis is passing through the boat. You see the handcuffs and shackles in the boat. no normal fairy would have that. Meaning that this boat itself is preoperty of the prison most likely. #2: As soon as Teddy/Leadis gets on the island all guards have their guns at the ready and are paying extra attention to him. #3: During the interviews a few things. No one wants to talk about Andrew Leadis but it's clear they know who he is. The elderly woman, when asked about Dr. Shien(Sp?), smiles, looks at "Chuck" and he gives a warm smile back. #4: George Noyce alludes that Teddy/Leadis will have to let go of his wife if he ever wants to leave the island. He even tries to convince him she's not there, and pretty much brings up that Leadis is him in a sneaky way. #5: When the Warden and Teddy/Leadis are driving back to the main prison. The Warden says "oh I know you", the only the thing the audience doesn't know is that he means it literally. #6: When Dr. Naehring and Teddy/Leadis are fighting, the Dr. says that he is wounded. He would not know this unless he personally had past experience with Teddy/Leadis. #7: The PTSD segments all hint something terrible is going on. But the fragmented memories are not in place so we can fully grasp the picture. Much like in real life.

I really enjoyed the twist in this movie. I enjoyed it because they left hints, where some "mysteries" make it so the viewer would never suspect the twist, which is a bit cheap, like having it turn out that the perpetrator was a character that was never mentioned or seen etc. The two here did get close to the idea which was good but also the end made it so even if you were close there was still more to it, which is also a nice reward for those who are typically more perceptive in mysteries. Basically, the end represented that he couldn't live with himself anymore, so he lied because he knew his fate would free him of his past (and future in a sense).

Glad we can help get you through some rough times, Kat. Sorry for your losses. As for what you can call us, our go to is simply Mrs. Movies and Mr. Movies. You'll see the Mrs will sometimes comment with her Mrs. Movies account in that regard. 🤠

man, Leo in the lake getting his kids at the end. Just a perfect performance. Not even nominated for an Oscar for this.

Of anything, watch The Hateful Eight by Quentin Taratino. It uses the same ingredients as his debut 'Reservoir Dogs' by setting it on one location with a mystery plot. Top notch acting by a big cast.

epic acting by Leonardo. Sad that he is a rich hypocritical liberal in real life, who keeps talking about saving the planet, while flying around with his private jet, that pollutes more in one flight that a small town in an entire year..

The book this is based on is by the same author that wrote “Mystic River,” Dennis Lehane. If you haven’t seen that film, it’s worth a reaction!

This movie is mind blowing. Some says the Leo is actually a patient of the island and some says which I also believed he was subjected to the experiment the US government doing with the people in the island. And he wanted to spill the beans and he got caught now he was given like a stimulant (I think what they used was the cigars) that made him think of the stories that actually the Doctors created in his mind (about his wife and kids). But honestly you don't know if the things are truth or not.

LOL, that's what I said at the beginning of "Fallen"..."THAT'S Casey Jones!" Damn TMNT.

If you'd like to see Casey Jones in some other memorable movies Elias Koteas was in Crash(1997), Fallen (1998), and he was also the main characters father in Gattaca(1997).
