Because they didn't have home video widely available, films were often held in theater for quite some time. Today, getting more than 10 weeks is something impressive. Star Wars was in theaters for OVER a year. There are actually movie posters celebrating their one year anniversary in theater. This was such a hit. It was truly a phenomenon.

In 1977 I was 15 and already an "experienced sci-fi fan." But Star Wars catapulted the entire genre extremely forward. New technology and the realization that “old” stories also had their place in sci-fi. And then there is the hit Alec Guinness, a master class actor. By the way, what absolutely delights me is her partner's almost childlike enthusiasm. This is exactly what many people looked like in 1977 and they remain fans to this day.

As an extra emphasis on how big this was, and the mythology became, people who saw this didn't know about any sequels, and kept going back to see it again and again. I was 9 when it came out, and I saw it four times. I had friends who saw it over 20 times. Then the toys came out, and they all told more of the story and background, plus a novelization, and comic books. It was re-released in theaters several times, so it was at least 5 years later before it premiered on television. It was rarely even on HBO, and wasn't released onto video until 1986 as a 3-pack with the whole trilogy of the time. My family got it for Christmas and watched all three back-to-back-to-back in one day.

Excellent! On Point! We can tell Stef's loving it! That is one thing many of us love to see! I was 14 and had $50 and I wanted to see a movie. I waited like 3 weeks... Then I saw: "Star Wars" No info at all!!! NOTHING! Just the words: "Star Wars" coming soon. So I thought: "I wanna see a war in the stars!" It was more than I way beyond anything I ever dreamed of, way beyond what expected. That first Saturday I went alone. That Sunday I went alone! Both times there was only about 20 people. That first Tuesday is when the local movie critics put their review and described the movie. I was finally able to convince my friends to go and I told them we need to get to the first showing. We were like the 14 to 19th to enter! By the time they allowed us into the theater (about 9:45AM) the Line Had Grown to 2 blocks! For myself at that first viewing... There was 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968 for quite sometime. It IS a great movie in its own right, but Star Wars (1977) and I go by "Star Wars" because that's what was on the Bill Boards at the Theater! Anyway 2001 was fine, but slow and too cerebral... Star Wars was light years beyond! It had the story, the characters, the action, the space ships, battles, Good vs Evil, the entire package not to forget thee epic music nor the Special Effects! It was thee first movie to have all of this and soo much more. From the mid/late 1960's to the late 80's is "Thee Golden Age of Cinema." In the Late 60's there was a show called: "Star Trek." Yes I started watching in 1968 (OG Trekkie). As a country in 1969 we landed a man on the moon for our Beloved Fallen President Kennedy. Then in 1976 we celebrated our 200th Anniversary as a country! In 1977 the Space Shuttle "Enterprise" had her 'training missions' if I remember correctly. We all where looking up to the stars! Then this movie "Thee Greatest Adventure of All Time" landed at the theaters! As soon as I left the theater I asked a usher if they had Light Sabers, he turned to I presume his manager and then said: "I don't think they make them." If they did I would have bought one on the spot! There was only one scene at the theaters that I detected artifacting around one single scene with a Star Destroyer that lasted maybe 2 seconds or so. Other than that you couldn't tell the difference between SFX and 'real action.' These films have been 'updated' 5 or 6 times, one is not listed. It was right after "The Empire Strikes Back." I call that ear 'Thee Golden Age of Cinema' because there are SOO many movies that are soo great they have stood the test of time, but not only that they also 'effect' the viewers in ways that can not be accounted for. Soo many people attribute this movie for going into "science" related field! How many movies can claim that as an Accolade?!? The only other that I can say that did that is the TV Show Star Trek! But not in the mass quantities that this one single movie does! As I said we looked to the stars! We look to the future and we dream of it too. Then we try to make it a reality; this is the legacy of the "Baby Boomer Generation."

Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were always just backstory to these films. The original draft script (I have read and studied every draft by the way) for the first film was very big and contained things it would be nearly impossible to do at that time, so he trimmed it down and used some deleted concepts in the next two films. As the story evolved through each draft, and each film, he had more and more backstory and realized he could make prequels out of that material. He called the first film Episode 4 for several reasons, including wanting to replicate the experience people had watching the old episodic movie serials in the 1940s (precursors to TV shows that played in theaters before a longer movie, usually around 12 episodes and 15 minutes each). Star Wars was partially inspired by the Flash Gordon sci-fi serials. He initially wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie but couldn't get the rights so he came up with his own sci-fi concept, Star Wars, which allowed him to add ideas from other genres he loved like Westerns, WWII films, and Samurai films. With the old serials, if you didn't go to the theater each week (one episode played for a week) you would miss episodes and have to be filled in on what happened, usually with a short recap at the beginning and sometimes an opening crawl like Star Wars has. Lucas grew up watching those old serials replayed on TV in the 1950s. He was replicating the feeling of coming in on Episode 4 of a serial and having to figure out the backstory as you went along. This also gave him room to go back and do the previous episodes some day. Initially, Star Wars was just called "Star Wars" in theaters with no episode number or subtitle. It wasn't until "The Empire Strikes Back" that people saw an episode number and subtitle, which was very confusing, but they re-released the original film and added "Episode IV: A New Hope" to the opening. In the original scripts for the first film, it is actually numbered Episode 1, but the studio didn't like the idea so they made him just call it Star Wars. Luckily, that allowed him to make it Episode 4 once it made a ton of money for them.

Star Destroyers can certainly go to hyperspace. The issue is once a ship leaves, unless they are going in a straight direction (which a smuggler like Solo wouldn't do), then you'd have no idea where they were headed. Imperial strategies when pursuing would be to deploy fleets to the most likely destinations and even had Interdictor cruisers which can pull vehicles out of hyperspace.

Even though you'd seen it before, Liam, it was obvious that you were excited like a little kid just seeing how much Stef was enjoying it. 😀 That's the most awesome feeling and such a wonderful thing to share favorites with each other! Love it! This movie came out in 1977, the year I turned 9, and I was enraptured with it. Though I will admit I had nightmares about Jawas attacking me and my school friends for a few weeks afterwards. They were just creepy for young me! Peter Cushing was a perfect Grand Moff Tarkin, menacing and threatening with ease. But the actor was so nice and pleasant that Carrie Fisher had a difficult time acting like she hated him. This was probably compounded by the fact that the uniform boots for Tarkin were small enough that they hurt his feet, so he only wore them in scenes where they would be visible. In all the other scenes he was wearing comfy house slippers. 😀 I hated a lot of the scenes or objects that were added for the 1997 "remastered" version, like the dinosaurs being ridden in the first scene of the stormtroopers in the desert and all the unnecessary scenes and stuff cluttering up the scenes in Mos Eisley. The worst for me is the Jabba scene. In the original deleted scene, Jabba was just a fairly stout human male, not a slug alien. They used CGI to put a slug Jabba skin over the human in the scenes and removed the human's voice speaking English and put in Jabba's speech. The CGI looked awful, and the scene made no sense in the continuity. Han has just come from the cantina where Greedo has told him that Jabba has put a price on his head so high that every bounty hunter will be looking for him. And then after killing Greedo, Han returns immediately to the hangar where Jabba just wants to talk to him, and Han talks smack back to him, supposedly steps on his tail, and all that crap? Nope, just makes zero sense at all. Still bothers me. Obviously. 😛 Loved this! I subbed after seeing your Top Gun Maverick reaction, and I'm loving seeing you all react to these movies! I'm trying to catch up on several of your reactions to favorites of mine at once here while I have internet. Will be watching the Alien reaction before I leave town again, and waiting patiently for a Return of the Jedi (and the Aliens) reaction soon! Keep up the great work!

The way your wife/girlfriend watched episode IV was how I first watched this movie when I was a little boy 40 years ago. Her reaction was very genuine and I loved it. You earned my subscription to your channel. I hope you both will react to episodes V and VI and the prequels and I can't wait to watch.

About a couple of weeks ago I saw this on the big screen, with a live orchestra (the RSNO) doing the score. I also saw it when it first came out in 1977 (and was then simply called "Star Wars") *flexes wildly* 😎😜

I was 13 years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre. The Special effects were ahead of its time. The Movie was originally called Star Wars because George Lucas did not know if he would be allowed to make more Star Wars Movies. It was renumbered Episode IV when episode V The Empire was released in 1980. He started with the first Movie of his Middle Trilogy.

Liam, you've explained it perfectly. I find that most people reacting have a better understanding of Star Wars than today's fans cause there's a lot of misinformation going on lately. So you will be reading a lot of wrong comments in your videos. George Lucas did plan the backstory that we see in the prequels, he basically had a big story and he wasn't sure how to transform that into movies. He took a small part of it, that enclosed the cheapest production budget and made one movie about it, thinking it was going to flop. It became so successful he had to finish the rest of that story. The original trilogy meant a 180º flip to the way movies were made. From 1983 to 1994 he researched and innovated on digital technology to enhance his production and in the process he ended up becoming the main provider of both special and digital effects in Hollywood (without even being in Hollywood) and changed the industry multiple times gaining a lot of enemies and competitors. Lucas declared he was going to end his saga in 2005 with 6 movies and so he did. He hasn't changed his opinion since 1993 but before his last movie Lucas asked the creator of Dexter's Laboratory, legend Genndy Tartakovsky, to release a 2D micro-series telling the dynamic of the war: 'Clone Wars' (2003). It won 3 Emmy Awards and due to its length (two hours) Tartakovsky considered it "Episode II and a half". Years later, this concept and setting would serve as a pilot and be continued/retconned in computer animation by Lucas in a new version called "The Clone Wars" and a story of its own.

I've found you guys because of Avatar's reaction. Loved the dymamics of you both. Star Wars is my favourite saga ever and I can't wait to see it all here. You gotta do the animated series as well, it's the best SW ever

@@Reactsandgames YES. all of them in fact. CLone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch. Clone Wars animated series might be the BEST thing ever done. It adds SO much depth into every character. It makes the...well...no spoiler here. but it makes things more painful and with more sense. BTY. The Avatar's journey was amazing.

First time watchers it's always best to watch the original trilogy first, and then the prequels after, because if you watch them in numbered order, a lot of things in the prequels spoil a great number of things in the original trilogy. The reveals of 5 and 6 especially would have no impact at all if you watch the prequels first.
