​@mahoganyreacts For the 25th Anniversary of the original Star Wars, all 3 movies of the first trilogy were re-released as Special Edition... with some updates... for this movie... 1. The dewback (creature the stormtrooper was riding when they were first searching around in the desert) was a cgi addition to a pre-existing scene. 2. The "fake" looking scenes as they entered the space port Mos Eisley were added cgi and cut-pasted bits from the original entrance scene (which was a lot less busy)...were additional cgi... 3. When Han is talking to Jabba (slug creature)... that scene WAS shot with a human actor as Jabba (Lucas hadnt yet decided Jabba was a slug...and then removed the scene) but wasnt used...it was added back in with a cgi Jabba superimposed over the actor and Jabba's vocals overdubbed. 4. And for the most argued question... "who shot first?" Originally Han shot Greedo before Greedo could make him a corpse, but Greedo did get a reactionary shot off... but in the Special Edition the edited the frames to make it look like Greedo shot first (and Han dodged it because how could Greedo miss point blank? But the dodge looks fake as hell) and THEN Han returns fire. Problem with this version is it falls in line with the old Disney trope (way back before Disney bought Lucasfilms) of "good guys are always good and bad guys are always bad"... DEPSITE THE FACT THAT one of these movies is a literal redemption story and another whole trilogy about the fall of a good guy character. Han is complex...he's self surving with a very healthy dose of self preservation....which at the end he sets aside for the greater good. Making him good from the start destroys his arc... and letting Greedo get off a shot first makes Han dumb.

Fun Fact: The bickering between R2-D2 and C3-PO was inspired by two bickering peasants from an old samurai movie called The Hidden Forteress (1958). The whole movie was a big inspiration for the script of this movie.

One story I've heard is that Episode 4 was originally meant to be Episode 1. But between the first movie and making the second, Lucas decided that he would make prequels to this movie. And so, this movie was re-released as Episode IV - A New Hope.

This old man recalls that at the time, the film magazines were full of mentions of how the director intended a 12-episode series, like one of the Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers film serials. We got three main movies, three prequels, and arguably some sequels. There should be more, but it's already tottering. It's actually my hope that the material that exists gets edited into a 12-episode serial, with the three battles in Phantom menace happening separateley, for example. It's been done by fans.

​@@stevetheduck1425 Yes to all this... however.... The reason for the first movie being "episode 4" has nothing tondo with prequels.... From George's own mouth... it had to do with the IMPLICATION there was more before it... we're entering the realm "in media res", as it were. It was about making the fiction feel lived in and previously established and serialized (like Flah Gordon, which was the biggest inspiration for the original trilogy ). As for prequels and planned episode numbering... you have to remember: nobody knew this film wouldnt flop, or that there would be a trilogy, let alone prequels. And it was thrown in RIGHT at the end. It really was a spur of the moment unplanned edit to the name.

7:05 "Oooh! What are those?" Those are dewbacks. This was an updated scene in the Special Edition. Another dewback is seen just outside the cantina bar when C3PO says, "Come on, R2!" Both dewbacks were updated with CGI animation for the Special Edition.

I was 13 Years old in 1977 when I saw Star Wars in the Movie Theatre. The Special effects were ahead of its time. The movie was originally just called Star Wars because George Lucas did not know if he would be allowed to make more Star Wars Movies. This movie was renamed Episode IV A New Hope after Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980. George Lucas started with the First Movie of his middle Trilogy.

One of the true heroes of the Star Wars saga is John Williams, who wrote the score for this and nearly all the films in the franchise. He also wrote the score for Jaws (you know you've heard that shark music somewhere, even if you haven;t seen that one), Superman, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, and pretty much every film directed by Steven Spielberg. He's been been nominated for over fifty Oscars in his long career, more than anyone alive. (Only Walt Disney was nominated more times).

Welcome to your Star Wars journey! My history, as an 80s kid, SW was everything. Had the posters, lunch boxes, action figures, etc., etc., etc. My Dad took me to Ep 4, 5 & 6 when I was a kid. I took him to Ep 1, 2 & 3 as a young adult. As a Dad, I raised my daughter on Star Wars, Star Trek & Doctor Who. Great memories, great franchise. ENJOY! :)

Small explanation. The Jawas are a race of non-human scavengers found on multiple planets, the Tuskens are the native people of Tatooine, (a subject explored in the old expanded universe referred to as Legends, and within the last half decade brought back to be explored in Disney canon,) given how fraught the tensions are between the Tuskens and the settlers, Luke wouldn’t have the best impression of the Tuskens as a whole, even before the whole incident depicted in the movie, so the non-Tusken perspective provided by the movies is not an unbiased one. (Though as mentioned another perspective is given in later entries in the franchise, both before the buyout by Disney and afterwards, in the Legends Expanded Universe and Disney EU.)

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub, the scene with Jabba the Hutt and other minor changes. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy

The prequels were good... not as fun as the original trilogy but they earned a place nonetheless. The sequels, however, were a colossal disappointment of what could have been with rhe talent they had...and wasnt. A lot of missed opportunities and janky copycat writing. I've read better Star Wars stuff by Kevin J Anderson. And it's too bad because they had a fine mix of newer cgi and practical effects and the actors did their job best they could, and they were fun despite the bad writing. So its not they were all around bad, but its obvious they could have been so much more. That said.. "Rogue One" was actually good (despite it being Disney Star Wars...which who did the sequel tilogy, as well as the streaming series which ranged from mid to awful).

Hello. This is the updated version of the movie (1997, I believe), rather than the 1977 original. It was a twenties anniversary release. George Lucas added scenes and updated some special effects, then pronounced this the definitive version. There are many, including me, who prefer the original release. The original was called simply "Star Wars," no number. Lucas wasn't sure if there would be movies beyond the original three.

Like some of the commenters have said you have started your journey into one of the most popular and iconic science fiction series to have ever been made. Believe it or not this movie very nearly didn't get made. At the time 20th Century Fox was very reluctant to spend any money on a sci-fi movie in the mid 70's but fortunately George Lucas had a friend in the studio who managed to convince the studio heads to open up their wallets LOL! Generally, Star Wars fans are understanding and enthusiastic about newbies who start their journey into this franchise but from time to time you may encounter some fans who can range anywhere to overly critical and nitpicky to very toxic hopefully that will be very far and few in between. Anyway, enjoy you journey into the Star Wars universe with all its different creatures, planets and cool technology I'm certain you'll be looking forward to the rest of the movies.

the spaceport shots may have looked "fake" but they brought a more complete exposure to its surroundings in the original version, the only material shown on screen were the speeder heading down an empty street, a couple of extra shots showing other patrons and vehicles and then the party getting stopped by the troops George Lucas rigged together this movie with limited resources and he barely got enough film shot for the editing phase so this wasn't his vision in full The CGI shots restored and finished the sequence at the same time There's a "1977 and modern day" comparison video for all three original trilogy movies Take a look at them when you get the chance

1:50 I got into this franchise mostly just because it was one of the really popular kid-friendly franchises when I was little. The second movie came out when I was 1, so the first two were on my TV in my earliest memories. 2:35 The opening text crawl is inspired by the Saturday matinee serials -- episodic shorts that ran before the "real" movie in theaters in the '40s and '50s -- writer/director George Lucas grew up on. Because each serial ended on a cliffhanger, each one started with a recap of what happened in previous weeks. Nightmare Theater on PBS shows old serials before their main movie to give that old timey theater experience vibe. 4:55 That's the voice of the legendary James Earl Jones. The actor in the Darth Vader suit is stuntman David Prowse. 6:05 Those are Jawas, one of two indigenous sentient species on Tatooine (although they sometimes occasionally show up on other planets). 7:05 Those lizards that some of the stormtroopers are riding on are called dewbacks. They're not sentient, basically just beasts of burden. 8:10 That's exactly it, they take whatever they find out in the desert and sell it. 10:10 He imitated the call of a krayt dragon, the apex predator on this planet and the one thing Sand People are actually afraid of. 12:55 Those are newer special effects than at the beginning of the movie, interestingly enough. 10:05 to 10:10 - GOD, I HATE the fact that they changed the Krayt Dragon call a second time! Either keep the ghostly howl or go back to the original version! This noise makes NO SENSE whatsoever! It sounds like somebody's foot got impaled and their reaction was that noise! It makes me cringe so bad that I mute my TV every time it comes to that! *sigh* Anyway, after you watch Return of the Jedi, I highly recommend checking out Spaceballs. Now, the first thing I need to address regarding it is that it came out after the Original Trilogy, so you don't need to watch the Prequels before seeing it. Second, it's a parody film by the King of Comedy, Mel Brooks. If you're familiar with that name, then you already know you're gonna laugh. And while it mainly parodies Star Wars, it also spoofs and references other sci-fi franchises like Star Trek. Trust me, it's one of Mel Brooks's best comedies ever made!

The original trilogy has been altered many times since its original release (and some of those changes are quite controversial with fans, as you might guess). This includes a number of references to the prequel trilogy, which might be confusing to someone who hasn't seen them yet. Most people just watch them in release order (first the original trilogy, then the prequels). I'm someone alone in the wilderness on this, but I sincerely believe, for a first timer, the best viewing order is actually this film, then Empire Strikes Back, then the prequels, and then finally Return of the Jedi. Yes, you read that right: Episodes 4,5,1,2,3, and then 6. It's hard to explain why without spoiling anything, but ESB has a major reveal, after which, the prequels let you go back and see the back story of a VERY important character, and revealing the antagonist of the saga, before ROTJ resolves everything and lets you end things on a positive note.
