Donnie was suffering before the fight outside the bowling alley. He misses a strike (the only time he does so in the movie), looks confused and rubs his hand. Tingling in your hand is often the first sign of a heart attack.

They Coens said it's basically putting a deadbeat burnout in a Raymond Chandler noir novel like "The Big Sleep". So instead of the protagonist trying to get to the bottom of the mystery, he's trying to avoid it. I've also seen people describe it as a story trying to form around a character, but the character fights it until the story just gives up.

Natalie notes it's funny that there are so many characters and that it's hard to keep up with what's going on. in interviews the coen bros said they were trying for that chandler-esque LA noir where even the author can't keep track of who did what.

Maybe, but the Dude isn't really fighting it. He's just going with it. To me, The Dude is really just that guy who wants to live a simple life and do his own thing. He has no drum to beat and just wants to go along and get along. The events happening to him and around him and even his friends are the world trying to make him pick a side. The older I get and the weirder the world gets the more relevant this movie becomes.

EDIT: Also, the reason Walter keeps telling Donny to shut up is actually a subtle reference to Fargo! Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo talked constantly, and John Goodman is basically someone finally telling him to STFU. Also, my dad was a Vietnam vet. and though he refused to actually talk about the war, he would say wild, made-up stuff just like Walter (and occasionally quote this movie) just to annoy the Hell out of me. As others have already said, this is definitely a movie worth multiple viewings. :) I watched it when it first came out & thought it was OK. Then, years later, I watched it again & something CLICKED & I absolutely fell in love with it.

Oh gosh, always such a pleasure to watch and listen to a new commentary from you. Glad you enjoyed the film. Honestly, it often does take multiple viewings to fully appreciate all the bits and lines. It's the kind of film that grows on you, which is why it became such a cult smash after an underwhelming first run. You can see John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, and Jon Polito (the private eye) in what is perhaps the Coen Brothers' masterpiece, "Miller's Crossing" (1990), which stars Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, and Marcia Gay Harden in a very stylish, clever, and satisfyingly fresh take on a '30s or '40s gangster flick.

Fun fact: John Goodman's character Walter was based off of the Coen brothers' real life friend and fellow film maker John Milius. Milius is best known for co-writing Apocalypse Now, directing Conan the Barbarian and Red Dawn (84). He is just as over the top and ridiculous in real life as the character Walter was in this film :)

The accent that Julianne Moore is speaking with is called 'Trans-Atlantic," which is basically a made-up accent from the early 20th century that was a combination of American English and upper-class (Royal family) British English. The accent was taught in east-coast finishing schools, and thus was a mark of both wealth and social status. Katherine Hepburn famously spoke with this accent.

I always get a little nervous when I see people react to The Big Lebowski. I'm very much in the 'it gets better with every watch' camp, but I know that some just don't enjoy it that much at all. So glad to see that Natalie seemed to love it though!

"It's not going to tie together with a little bow at the end", that's the whole point. The movie was about a man and his quest to replace his rug that tied his room together but in the end he never got a new rug but instead created a legacy, a baby, because the world always needs someone to be The Dude. The quest for a new rug was a failure of epic proportions but The Dude abides, he accepts that not everything works out the way you hope, you just accept what is and move on. "I Abide" is the mantra of Dudism, like the song Que Sera Sera, Whatever Will Be Will Be by Doris Day, quite catchy.

I saw Raising Arizona (1987) as an kid with my dad and found it hilarious. Of course, i didn't know who The Coen Brothers were back then. But over 10 years later, i learned who and how great these sibling auteurs were. This was an incredible piece of work. Not your average caper and then some. Most would have not believed that this was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Huge honor for any cult classic and it is much deserved. There is a spinoff, "The Jesus Rolls" (2020). It's also the remake of a French film Going Places (1974), John Turturro reprises his role as Jesus Quintana, also wrote and directed it.

There was actually a big theory that Donny wasn’t even real, and that only Walter can see and hear him as The Dude never actually interacts directly with Donny. The reason is that Donny is a hallucination brought on by Walter’s PTSD from fighting in Vietnam. Granted there is a moment where Dude does actually say, “Thank you, Donny!” but that can be debated as Dude just humoring Walter. Donny dying of a heart-attack at the same time Walter fought the Nihilists could be a sign of Walter overcoming his PTSD and thusly Donny dies. I know full-well that this is all just theory, but it’s a fun theory and it’s funny when you actually watch the movie with it in-mind. lol

@Jaden_The_Celestial

@@jbailey5061 actually it was 3 against 2-man teams. The other teams only had 2 players. Also nobody else actually talks directly to Donny. The ashes are the killer for this theory, but if you really wanna reach down this barrel, they literally could’ve been just normal ashes like from a fireplace, and the whole scattering ceremony was just a way for Walter to finally have closure with his PTSD.
