Brutal film. Many people were shocked, passed out, and/or ran screaming from the theater when this came out. I credit the incredible acting and make-up work for the terror people still have when they see this movie. Fun Fact: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, hitting him in the face. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake.

I love how the demon fears Father Merrin, the exorcist. Even mentions his name in the backward speech and screams his name when he arrives at the house in Georgetown. In the beginning of the film, you see him uncover the tiny statue of the demon he had faced before when he was younger. He went to the statue on the hill in Iraq to see if there were any signs that he’d have to face the demon again. As he stood looking at it, the dogs started fighting and he knew he’d have to face this demon again. That’s why he went back to America. He knew their battle would take place there. They know each other.

Original Psycho OP: In 1973 my father had restricted blood flow to and from his heart. Before resorting to bypass surgery, his doctor gave him tiny white pills in a tiny metal container to keep in his pocket at all times. When he had chest pains, he'd put one of the nitro pills under his tongue so they'd go straight to his blood and open the blood flow to his heart and stop the possible heart attack. That's exactly what the old Exorcist (priest) was doing in the first and last scenes. It was very common in 1974. The movie was telling its 1974 audience that the old priest had a serious heart condition that the demon exploited in the last scene to cause him to have a fatal heart attack. This was the first movie of its kind, based on a true story of a teenage boy allegedly possessed and cured by an exorcism conducted by a priest. The graphic special effects and shocking violent real-world profanity never seen in ANY movie before this made it more terrifying. Also, seeing it in a sold-out dark theater on the big screen in 1973 with people so traumatized some of them would run out of the theater during the shocking scenes, made it further terrifying. Also, it was the first horror movie wherein its characters reacted to what was happening as they would in real life instead of being stunningly stupid, unreal, shallow characters like they were in every other horror movie wherein the whole movie was about imitating the special effects in The Exorcist without matching the acting, storytelling, writing, cinematography, and character development prior to and building up to the shocking scenes, which made those scenes more effective. Because you were busy verbalizing your reaction to the movie and thinking about what you were going to say, you (and all 12 other reactions I watched for this movie) also missed the significance of the desecration in the church done to the statue and the demon telling Damien Kerris (the priest) that it wanted an exorcism because it would bring the demon and the priest closer together. What was made clearer in the book was the plot that the demon's real target for possession was the Catholic priest it got in the end - not the little girl it used to get the priest. The demon used the little girl's use of the ouija board to possess the girl (Regan) and the possession of Regan as a conduit to possess the priest as it did in the end. That was the underlying plot of the movie that EVERY reaction video (over a dozen) missed that was made clearer in the book than in the movie - but was still the underlying plot in the move as well which was the purpose of the desecration scene in the church and the demon wanting an exorcism and getting what it wanted in the end - possessing the priest (Damien Kerris). For all the reasons explained above, when we simply watched the movie in silence in 1973 in a darkened theater on the big screen, it made it a once-in-a-lifetime movie event unmatched by any movie before or after when it comes to being scary. ALL of the copycat movies and sequels that followed paled in comparison.

I appreciate your comment. In the US it is illegal to carry unmarked pills you can be arrested for narcotics maybe that’s a new law or something but that’s why I didn’t understand how he could carry pills and the shakiness that accompanied his taking this pills made me give it a double take. As far as the desecration. I didn’t miss it’s importance if I had I wouldn’t have put it in my reaction. Being unaware of the book obviously leaves me guessing about The Priest. I was under the impression that he had prior dealings with the other Priest not father Kerri’s but either way. I’m taking the film in as it is. As a new watcher I do not have the pleasure of a silent black theatre or previous book knowledge and expectations. I wasn’t alive when this was released so there’s nothing I can do about that.

This story is inspired by a true event, but it was a teenage boy. The book makes it clear that the story is really about the old priest and the demon - the old priest had exorcised that same demon back when he was a young missionary in Africa and possessing the young girl was just to bring the old priest back for round 2 of the fight.

This is the truth that 14-year-old boy that's supposed to be possessed back in 1949 if he was really possessed by demons he wouldn't live to tell about it that boy was really possessed ghost spirits witches he didn't get possessed by demons in the original story that 14-year-old boy his aunt died and a few weeks after he started playing with the Ouija board trying to contact her from the dead and weird events started happening like the bed was moving on its own writing weird words on the walls Whiting weird things on the 14-year-old boy chest but he was never possessed if a real life demon gets inside a person you wouldn't been alive to tell about it because demons don't get inside to hurt you they get inside to kill you only that 14-year-old parents saying something that was unnatural they just said that he was possessed my demon when he when evil spirits was in that house cuz that boy was trying to do some witchcraft things with that Ouija board

Merrin (the old priest) - have a bad heart. He mentions this as he is offered a Whskey - that he should not drink it as his doctor have told him not to. The "drugs" he is taking is probably Nitroglycerin (yes, the same as the explosive) - as it is a common remedy for agina pectoris (chest pains when you got congested arteries) that quickly lowers blood pressure. This is probably how he died. His weak heart gave up from the strenuous task. If you notice - the two priests: Merrin - weak body, but strong in faith. Dimmy - strong body, but weak in faith.

Those little pills are nitroglycerin pills, for the heart. It's been a long time since I watched it. It's crazy scary, I don't know if I can watch it again. The Emily Rose story is also very disturbing, and the worst part is that the Emily Rose movie is based off of a true story. As for the Ouija board, there is a great story about how it got patented as a "game". The patent office didn't want to grant it, so the guys asked the people in the office if they'd like a demonstration. The story is, they all went into the office, and when they came out, the patent office guys were disturbed, but they granted the patent. At least, that's what I've read, so I'd be curious if there is any more to the story.

My friend if you think this movie was terrifying to watch in your home by yourself imagine being in a crowded theater in 1973 with people who'd never seen horror this intense. This movie knew how to do jump scare right, not like the crap that passes for horror films today.

Congrats on a year doing this. You can never go wrong with Ellen Burstyn. No matter what role she is in, she is genuine, and believable. I don't see this as a 'horror' movie--more a 'drama with satanic overtones' HAHAHA. It takes the original material (the book, written by William Peter Blatty) which was serious...and treats it with a maturity and gravity not seen in many films that consider themselves 'horror'. Enjoy the day.

Here are some additional inputs. What is important was the child was saved no matter how powerful the adversary . Both Priests sacrificed their lives to save the child. And to offer once life to save others (to follow Christ's example,) is a sacred act which even the demon cannot win. It is also a story of the Priest whose faith was weakened bec of the tragic death of his mother. But later his faith was restored when he realized that he doesn't want the mother to experience his tragedy. The medalion (St Joseph's icon) is a Catholic thing. The image is a reminder to the faithful to think of Christ /God. In the opening scene on Iraq it implies that the demon has existed during primordial times. The presence of the medalion in Iraq implies that in the past Christian faithful has used the medalion as a protection against Evil. It should be noted that the possessed child/Megan has to ripped it off from the priest before the evil dpirit could possess him. Also the presence of the medalion in Iraq suggests that the battle between Good and Evil was the present even in the past. In fact tit was stated that the demon and the old priest have met before the past.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most was the demon flashes. 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 5. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 6. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 7 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness of his MORTAL SIN of suicide with the other priest. 8. Imagine how hard it was to sell that house.

I couldn’t imagine seeing this so young. This demon flashes got me too. The spider walk is so freaky to me my goodness. Ok I see I have to watch the prequels. I was hoping he did but when I heard about the sequels I knew he just ended himself. But fortunately the other priest was there to save his soul. 😂😂😂😂 I didn’t even think of that they might as well turn it into a freshmen dorm.

I spoke to a real Exorcist he said there are only about 100 or so ordained. An exorcist in the Catholic Church or have to be very pious and good damn near perfect. Because the demons will ridicule them and call out any sins you might have. Some people think that any priest can do it like the mother in the movie thought but it's not true.

Before this the ouija boards were more a kids game, but this movie made that fear, yeah your fear is because of this movie, and those are REAL medical tests, from the time, yeah plus one of the male nurses, with the beard holding reagans head was a murderer and he claimed to be a serial killer .. yeah if the movie wasnt disturbing enough , not to mention the exorcist curse. NOPE, The Domincans are not people from the Dominican Republic but they are a sect of Christianity the Order of Preachers, also known as the Dominicans (Latin: Ordo Praedicatorum; abbreviated OP), is an order of the Catholic Church founded in Toulouse, France, by the Spanish priest Saint Dominic. It was approved by Pope Honorius III via the papal bull Religiosam vitam on 22 December 1216. Members of the order, who are referred to as Dominicans, generally carry the letters OP after their names, standing for Ordinis Praedicatorum, meaning of the Order of Preachers.

I read the novel of this movie and Reagan was messing with that Ouija board for months there's two novels one of the novel's is about the movie that's the one that's got a red cover on the front of it and it's got a picture of a little girl with her eyes closed shut that's the movie version novel the other novel is a big book with a hardcover it looks like it's got a picture of a none in the front of it now that's the one that tells you about a fourteen-year-old boy they got truly possess from messing with a Ouija board because the director of The Exorcist wrote the novel first and then decided he was going to make a movie about it he was going to use a boy to do the movie but he didn't have the parent's permission to do such a thing so he felt he should have respect for the possessed boy's parents and their wishes so he put in his novel a little girl's face on the front cover and he used a girl that played the part I did some research on that that's how I know what I'm talkin about some of that stuff that happened in the movie it happened to that fourteen-year-old boy like the writing on his body that magically appeared the shaking bed the spitting at the priest the foul language the walls making Screech noises the smell of burning every time a demon is present growling noises you just got to read the book it gives you more details even the book about the movie gives you more details I got that movie The Exorcist of Emily Rose download tell you that movie ain't shit that movie ain't even scary The Exorcist part one is way scarier than this shit the only thing that kind of gave me chills is when Emily Rose was in class when she was at college and she was looking out the window and she saw a demon's face when she was looking in the sky now that gave me chills the best that movie wooden shed

This film cuts close to home for me... This is pure evil on film so many layers to it deep horror what hell must feel like guilt lack of faith fear intrapment... That,s what the younger priest felt, the devil had already delt with the older priest in iraq in the beginning he was an experianced exorcist having come across this demon form before... But the young priest was filled with guilt sadness regret for not givin up his job and life to look after his frail mum so the devil tempts him after the old priest had a heart attack with his mums voice... So he gets him angry and the young priest demandes the demon into him... For the devil this is what he wanted a follower of god who is questioning his faith in the lord at his weakest point in life by himself with regret guilt and sadness taking his soul to hell would be a laugh in the face of God and his flock.... Thats why when he punches the child and orders the demon into him he had to sin and hope god forgave him by commiting suicide as his redemption hopeing for gods forgiveness knowing to take your own life dames you to hell the ultimate catch 22... If you want a true impact of the Exorcist read the book and pray for forgiveness... After reading that i suggust reading the bible and sticking with it faithfully... The films based on a real exorcism which took place in 1949 in the states these true Exorcismes are rare at anytime very few documantations avaliable but the 1949 event was truly shocking.... nice reaction this film is deep beyond deep...

The book centres round the quiji board which is briefly mentioned in the plot that the mother disregards as a toy to her it was something playful and keeps her daughter amused while she got on with privileged lifestyle a family with no faith a perfect combination for Pazuzu the beast that walks the earth it destroys innocence and purity and slowly sucks the family and friend's closer and closer to he'll but it wants the ultimate prize one of GOD'S servant's read the book ats a beast then watch the film again...
