What's so terrifying about this film is that it stems from the culture's belief and emphasis on the power of emotions, and how they are just as important and a part of us as our physical appendages are. if you did with unexpressed resentment, hatred, etc. that's what will occupy the space where you passed. it's not simply a curse in the way American's view curses, it's emotional energy.

Regarding Takeo’s body, yes physics would have stopped the thumping, but what this movie didn’t show was that Toshio’s ghost was sitting there pushing the body’s legs, causing them to keep thumping. Also, he was hanging by Kayako’s hair from the ceiling.

Not only are there two versions of the film, but also the sequels! They’re definitely worth checking out, and it’s an interesting study looking at the cultural differences in the films, because they’re essentially the same plot, but cultural aspects differ. In the US version, it takes place in Japan, but feels like a commercial western horror movie. In the Japanese version (the original) we see a less western style of filmmaking, with emphasis on the ghost’s behavior rather than rationalizing it. Japanese horror has always been about existential dread, and building it up. Long, drawn out shots that make you peek every corner of the screen, a sense of impending death, and no Buffy to keep you grounded. There is a small universe of Ju-On films, and even a series on Netflix. Ju-On 2 is my personal favorite of the series. Much love!

I'm Korean. I grew up with Asian horror movies and there was little CGI and very little special effects. These movies always involved a pale woman usually in a white outfit with long, straight black hair that's almost always wet. No real crazy looking monsters. To this day, the sight of a pale female with long, straight black hair scares the hell out of me. When Asian movies started getting popular and Hollywood began adapting these stories, I was shocked to see my terrifying childhood ghosts come back. Imagine my fear when I saw pictures of The Grudge, The Ring, etc. Asian movies, mostly Korean, still scare me unlike western movies. Hollywood adaptions are great but the original Asian ones are trauma inducing. I used to freak myself out whenever I had long hair and got out the shower and felt the wet strands touch the back of my neck. It still bothers me sometimes when my hair gets long. Great reminder for me to get a haircut. LOL I enjoy Western horror movies and love the Exorcist. I live in DC and partied many times on the Exorcist stairs in the late '80s/early 90's. The Omen is one of my favorite movies and inspired me to get a Rottweiler when I became an adult. She was the sweest, most cowardly 112 lb dog who loved everybody. Her name was "Ha Jee Ma!" which means "Stop it!" in Korean. That wasn't her original name but that was the only Korean my boyfriend at the time knew and would chase after her telling her to "Ha Jee Ma!" when she was a puppy. We didn't think too much about it until we noticed she started answering to it. LOL Another creepy Asian movie is The Audition. It's a Japanese movie that doesn't rely on supernatural elements. The main character is a living pale woman with long, straight black hair. LOL For a change of pace, you might want to check out the original French Canadian film called "Martyrs". It's a gruesome but thought provoking movie that most people can't stop thinking about for a long time. It's a movie that people usually don't watch a second time.

Imma love explaining this! So this movie is based off the Japanese version called juon. And that movie is based off of an old tale of a vengeful spirit called an onryo. Which is among the most powerful and deadly spirits in Japan. Soul snatchers some believe. Funnels to a darker place, others. But whenever a person sees one they believe they will die soon. Many people today will go out of their way to find a Shinto "priest" lacking the vocab, to sever the line between themselves and the connected spirit. Which was once a human soul. In my spiritual journey I've encountered a lot. Never one of these, and I hope I never, ever do. They are terrifying from all accounts I've heard. Great reaction it was awesome, hope you check out juon 😂.

I once lived in an apartment from the pre-WWII era in Norway which had a built-in closet in the master bedroom with a 15-20m shaft that led all the way up to the attic. Peeps used it to hide from the nazis, or that's what the plaque by the building entrance read anyways. One day, after going on a blind date and watching The Grudge in cinemas, I got home and opened the door to the built-in closet to hang up my coat when I swear to God I caught a glimpse of a face in the shaft. The face appeared to glide down towards me much like the scene in The Grudge where the kid's head sticks out a door and glides down. I immediately jumped back and moved my desk in front of the built-in closet and never opened the door to the built-in closet again for the remainder of my stay in that apartment. And the girl I went on a blind date with? Never called her again. True story.

First, thank you for all that you do. Second, you have helped me through rough times and appreciate you. Third, the other version you mentioned is the best in my opinion. However this version is ok for modern audiences.

Plus, the other version is a bit more atmospheric, slowly explanatory, and just more creepy.

I watched "The Ring" and it scared me. I watched "The Grudge" and it terrified me. Years later I watched "the Ring" and I was ok with it. I knew what to expect. Then I re-watched "The Grudge" and it STILL terrified me! 😆

Yah I think the Grudge had better staying power simply because the climax wasn’t shock value. The TV scene from the Ring was GREAT for it’s time but didn’t last

I watched this movie in a cinema. In a small room, like 20 seats. When the movie started half of those were occupied. When the movie ended, there was me and another guy. Everyone left because the movie was too intense.
