The Hunchback Of Notre Dame Movie Description:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 1996 American animated musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 34th Disney animated feature film and the seventh produced during the Disney Renaissance, it is loosely based on the 1831 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. The film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay written by Tab Murphy, Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and the writing team of Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. Featuring the voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Tony Jay, and Kevin Kline, the film follows Quasimodo, the deformed and confined bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and his yearning to explore the outside world and be accepted by society, against the wishes of his cruel, puritanical foster father Claude Frollo, who also wants to exterminate Paris' Romani population.
The film is considered to be one of Disney's darkest animated films due to its mature subject matter such as infanticide, lust, damnation, antiziganism, genocide, and sin, despite the changes made from the original source material in order to ensure a G rating from the MPAA. The musical score was written by Alan Menken, with songs written by Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who had previously collaborated on Pocahontas (1995). The pair later also collaborated on 2007's Enchanted.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered at the Louisiana Superdome on June 19, 1996, and was released in the United States on June 21, to generally positive reviews. It was a commercial success, grossing over $325 million worldwide and becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 1996. The film received Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for its musical score. A stage adaptation of the film was produced by Walt Disney Theatrical in 1999. A direct-to-video sequel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame II, was released in 2002.

I liked that Quasimodo doesn't get Esmeralda in the end, but accepts that she loves Phoebus, and they all remain friendly in the end. Also, Hellfire is still in my opinion one of the creepiest Disney villain songs in terms of genuinely making me feel frightened of a character. Seriously, Frollo is probably the most evil Disney villain ever. Tony Jay did an excellent job voicing him. RIP.

I think in the broadway musical version of the movie Esmeralda and Phoebus get a duet that turns into a trio with Quasimodo lamenting that he won't get love like that, but that at the end of the play Frollo does die and so does Esmeralda, but that as she dies she thanks Quasimodo for being a good friend to her, and we hear the reprise of 'The Bells of Notre Dame' as we see Phoebus and Quasimodo carry her through the streets of Paris together.

I like that this movie didn’t pull the “man that isn’t conventionally attractive gets the girl anyway because he’s so good so he ‘deserves’ it” that so many movies were doing at the time. Sure, he was disappointed, and that’s okay, but he wasn’t mad at her or stopped helping her once he realized he wouldn’t get what literally every man in Paris wanted from her and the only use that Frollo saw in her. He’s a good person, and he knew that Esmeralda didn’t love him back, so he cherished their friendship and helped good people without expectation of reward. A very important lesson that many people have forgotten.

My personal headcanon is that he had one, and then he killed it. He seems like the type---if he's got no problem with drowning babies in wells (along with....literally everything else he does XD), animals certainly wouldn't be off-limits, and neither would ppl, considering how chill he is with murder. Maybe that's what really happened to his last captain of the guard. XP

I truly think this movie is easily one of the best things Disney has ever made. Disney today would never have the guts to make something this dark nowadays. Unfortunately this movie came at the worst point during the decline of the Disney Renaissance, coming off the heels of the failure of Pocahontas (which i never thought was that bad) and the success of Toy Story, the first CGI film. As a result, not only was the box office for this movie lower than what came before, but reviews were weaker to the point that this became the first Disney animated film nominated for a razzie (a distinction worse disney films like Frozen and Strange World dont have somehow) With this movies themes of religion, corruption, and sin, these are truly the types of animated masterpieces we need and rarely get nowadays.
@jp3813
@jp3813 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes, the Razzies just make a up a category for a particular year, and the 17th iteration came up w/ the "Worst Written Film Grossing Over $100 Million" award. The nominees were The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Twister (winner), Independence Day, Mission: Impossible, & A Time to Kill. While critics didn't love these films, they've always been popular favorites among moviegoers.

27:43 Fun little fact: Gargoyles were made as statue protectors for old gothic buildings, mainly churches. Who were thought to fight off evil spirits and send them back to Hell. As good as the film is, I've always thought it was a great lost opportunity to produce a completely adult animated musical, with the kind of complexity seen in the 1939 live-action version with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara. But no, it was more important for Disney to sell toys than to create a great work of fine art.

I also love how they basically make the cathedral a character in this movie. There's just so much soul in this movie and I think I prefer that Quasi didn't get the girl. I think it's a bit more fitting in terms of Quasi's existence. He doesn't have any real friends, but in the end he does even if he doesn't wind up with the girl. He still winds up better than he was. This era had the best Disney movies. The Lion King, Aladdin, Hunchback, etc...ahhh so many great movies.

The book was incredibly dark, so they had to tone down a lot of things and make a lot of changes, but they still kept the core ideas… kind of; especially for the villain. Gotta admit, this movie is more metal than one would give it credit for. The sleazy priest falling into a fiery chasm, clutching onto his demons and in his final moments, for the second time in his life, feeling a pang of fear and doubt about the sanctity of his soul. Brilliant. Also, you're the first person I've seen to censor the word used to describe the travelling people in this movie. Im so glad you thoroughly enjoyed the way I knew you would! This is my favorite disney movie for sure. Esmerelda is a baddie and the music is fire. A live action would be kind of a lot and im here for it dammit!

I think Disney never got this dark again. Sadly. It is a masterpiece

This movie is based on a novel. Even though this movie seems dark, it's actually pretty light compared to the original novel. I read the original novel as a teen in school. It made me cry. It's an amazing book and a must read

I really recommend “ who framed Rodger Rabbit “ . It’s a truly underrated Disney classic from 1988 . I also recommend the movie “Anastasia” . This movie was originally from 20th century productions but Disney bought the rights . It’s still a underrated classic with a great soundtrack.

I've seen this in live action, and it's indeed epic. There's a stage musical that keeps (almost) all these songs but sticks to the stage show's darker ending where Esmeralda dies from inhaling the smoke and Quasimodo straight-up throws Frollo from the cathedral top. Also, Frollo is finally made a priest again, like he was in the book. It's not perfect, but the tone is way more consistent throughout, and really has a strong message of divine love perservering through dogmatic hate.

How can you not watch this film as a child when it came out?! And it's the late Tony Jay who voices the villain.

The best part of this was honestly seeing you react to the operatic music. I would show up for any videos you put out reacting to opera - either instrumental or with voice.

Even though Disney really did “Disney-fy” the story to make it brighter (hard to believe I know) this gave the beginnings of some of the most beautiful music and I love it. Hellfire is amazing (my favourite villain song and lyrics make more sense when you realize the character is supposed to be a priest not a judge but Disney didn’t want to go into a religious person dealing with corruption or sinful feelings so they made him a very religious judge lol). and the opening and ending Bells song just sweep you away. This led to the musical version of the Hunchback of Notre Dame which is so underrated and took the Disney songs and added to them and a closer take to the original story. It’s a soundtrack I always recommend.
