Gandalf himself said that there were many magic rings. Why would he have thought this was the _one_ ring that had been lost for 3000 years when there are many of them?
@blainekessler2220
@blainekessler2220 8 ай бұрын
Gandalf didn't "know" it was the One Ring. He suspected it might be one of the great rings of power, but he was not sure which one, or even if it really was. That is why he left Frodo that night telling him he needs to see the head of his order. He said he had questions that needed answers. Those were the questions he had. It wasn't until he found the writings of Isiuldor in Minas Tirith that he was almost sure it was the One Ring. Isiuldor said that the writing on the band was first as clear as red flame, but after it faded, it was a secret that only fire could tell. Which is why Gandalf came back to the Shire. He threw the ring in the fire to reveal any writing if it was there. Once the writing became clear again because of the fire, he knew exactly which ring it was.

@@ISavant Yes, between the party and Frodo actually leaving, it was actually quite a few months, almost a year. Jackson doesn't show that time laps in a few different places. I always also see reactors referring to Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin as "kids" or "young guys" because Jackson never makes it clear that the 4 Hobbits are actually in their 50's when they leave for that adventure. Hobbits "come of age" when they turn 33. Bilbo's party was when Frodo turned 33. He and Bilbo celebrated their birthdays together all the time. And he was in his 50's when he set off for Mount Doom. In the book, Gandalf didn't leave to leave to learn about the ring until much later. If Jackson would have followed the story to the letter, Frodo would have had the ring for nearly 20 years before Gandalf even knew it was the One Ring.

Gandalf knew that Bilbo had a magic ring, but did not suspect it was the One Ring until Bilbo started channelling Gollum at his party and didn't know for certain until he found the records of Isildur. There is a lot of magical stuff in Middle-Earth, so Bilbo having a magic ring wouldn't make anyone think of the One Ring. Everyone believed the One Ring to be lost long ago when it fell into the Great River and was believed to have carried downstream to the sea.

I heard somewhere that Gandalf assumed Bilbo's ring was one of the dwarven rings, because he found it on his adventure with the dwarves to take their treasure hoard back from a dragon. It is sort of canon that Bilbo didnt really tell anyone that he took the ring from gollum until long after his adventure, so Gandalf would only recently have become aware of his existence

I don't think anyone making comparisons to harry potter is somehow implying LotR copied something, but instead the comparisons are simply a way for people to quickly get up to speed while watching. We all relate things we watch to other things we've seen. Saying the ring is like a horcrux for example is a pretty adequate comparison. Both are vessels for somebody's lifeforce in some way. Thats a concept people with little fantasy exposure might struggle to understand. I know my parents would struggle. It's not a competition.

First, loved the reaction, looking forward to the rest. Second, you claimed that everyone loved Bilbo and thought him a hero. Actually, if you read the books, you'll learn that most of the adult Hobbits were not very fond of Bilbo. They all thought he was strange and mad. The Younger Hobbits loved him, because he told great stories about his adventures. The reason everyone was celebrating is because they all love parties. When a Hobbit has a birthday, it's Hobbits custom for the person who is having the birthday to give presents to others. So the Hobbits were looking forward to the party and to the presents that Bilbo was going to give them. But as for Bilbo himself, they were not very fond of him. Only a few Adult hobbits liked him. If you liked the movies, you really should check out the Unabridged books. If you're not fond of reading incredibly long books, check out the Audio Books. You'll learn a lot about what the movies were trying to tell the audience, but you'll learn a great deal of things Peter Jackson never even toughed on in the movies. I think you'll love the story even more.

FYI: The reason why Gandalf didn't noticed that Bilbo had the Ring is that the ring was kind of "dormant" (that's why Bilbo could used it without seeing the great fiery eye or being chased by the Nazghuls) so Gandalf thought it was just a trinket. He knew he had stolen it from Gollum but he hadn't traced the story of the ring before that. When Bilbo showed that much attachment to the Ring, when he called it "My Precious", that's when he became suspicious and went to gather informations about both how Gollum got the Ring and on how Sauron's ring was. And the infos he got made him realised that Bilbo's ring was the One Ring

At 20:00, Arwen says "I choose a mortal life." In Tolkien's book Elrond and his twin brother Elros had an Elvish mother and a Human father; they were the Peredhil, or Half-elven. The Valar, the Guardians of the World, gave them a choice of which kindred to belong to. Elros chose to be of mortal kind and became the first King of the Numenoreans. Elrond chose to be of Elvish kind and therefore was immortal. His children were also given the same choice. So this was a major decision on her part. She was nearly 2800 years old at the time of the movie; Elrond's birth date isn't specified, but he was over 5000 years old.

As others have said Gandalf knew Bilbo has A magic ring, but by this point THE ring has been lost for 3,000 years. ( Like literally the ring has been lost longer than Gandalf has been wandering Middle Earth at this point. No one is thinking about it any more.) He initially wants to learn more about it because of its sinister effect on Bilbo, but he likely didn't appreciate its significance until reading the account of Isildur when it becomes clear Bilbo's ring is THE ring.

All Gandalf knew at first was that Bilbo had a magic ring that let him walk invisible. However, 60 years passed after Bilbo found the Ring without Bilbo showing any sign of aging. No one would ever mistake a 99-year-old man for a 50-year-old man, yet Bilbo looked exactly the same at 111 as he did at 51, when he set out to help a group of Dwarves reclaim their kingdom. Bilbo also eventually began to speak to Gandalf about how much of a weight it had become on his mind. That he was never easy in mind unless he had it with him, but that he was also slightly resentful of how much of his attention it consumed. Gandalf knew that only a Ring of Power had the ability to preserve its bearer from the effects of time. Er go, Bilbo's Ring must be a Ring of Power, not just one of the "lesser" rings that the Elves made when they were practicing to make the Rings of Power. From that point on, it was a simple process of elimination to determine which Ring it was likely to be. Nine given Men, Seven given to the seven Dwarf Clans, Three kept by the Elves, and the One that Sauron forged in secret to dominate all others. Which could it be? Definitely not any of the three Elven rings, because those are all accounted for. Gandalf already knew that Elrond, Galadriel, and himself wore those. Definitely not any of the Nine given to Men, because the nine Men who were first given those rings are *also* still alive and still wearing those rings as the Nine Ringwraiths. Of the Seven rings given to the Dwarves, four were known to have been destroyed by dragonfire (This is because the Dwarves were resistant to evil, so the Rings couldn't overpower them and turn them into wraiths, as had happened with Men, or preserve them from mortality as Bilbo's ring had done for him. Instead, the Dwarven rings influenced their bearers over time to an even greater desire for wealth and treasure than they already had naturally. Wealth very often focuses on gold and large quantities of gold attract dragons. The reason Moria fell to the balrog rather than attracting yet another dragon was because the wealth of Moria lay in mithril rather than gold.). That narrowed the pool of possibilities to either one of the three surviving Dwarven rings or the One Ring. Meanwhile, Gandalf was busy discovering that the culprit who had corrupted The Greenwood into Mirkwood was Sauron, regaining strength and looking to collect all of the Rings of Power, especially his One. Naturally, this put Bilbo in danger, so Gandalf went searching for the only other person who knew Bilbo had a Ring of Power: Gollum. This would allow him to keep Sauron from learning Bilbo's story (although he was too late to prevent this), as well as allow Gandalf to trace where Gollum got the Ring from (which led him to the Gladden Fields, where Isildur died) to ascertain which ring it might be. At this point, I have to deviate from what can be gleaned from the films and mention a piece of evidence that PJ just never brought up for some reason (although, he might have shown it visually in the prologue and I just haven't taken the time to look close and see): from the moment Gandalf realized Bilbo's ring must be a Ring of Power, he already knew which ring it had to be. Of the 9, the 7, and the 3, every single Ring of Power was set with an appropriate gemstone to correspond with its particular properties. Only Sauron's Ruling Ring was a plain gold band with no gemstone. However, this put Bilbo in so much danger that Gandalf was actually trying to be in denial for a while and collecting as much evidence as he could. Isildur's suggestion that the Ring missed the heat of Sauron's hand and that fire might recall the lettering on it was just the final confirming test of a truth Gandalf dreaded to admit to himself. Once he had done so, Bilbo's plan to leave the Ring behind when he retired to Rivendell and the fact that he actually did so gave Gandalf hope that the Ring might not entirely override a peaceful will.

Including Sauron's One Ring, there are 20 Rings of Power in all: Sauron's Ring 9 Rings for Men 7 Rings for Dwarves 3 Rings for Elves Gandalf knows Bilbo has a magic ring, but never suspected it to be the One Ring. In fact, he probably didn't even think it could be a Ring of Power - until Bilbo refers to it as "my precious." That's when he convinces Bilbo to give up the Ring, gives it to Frodo, and leaves the Shire to confirm his suspicions. When he returns to the Shire (17 years later in the book), he throws the Ring in the fire, and finally confirms that Bilbo's Ring is indeed the One Ring when Frodo says there is writing on the band.

Let me share about Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was 500 years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh • By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years(solar years for them). but if you want a more true age you must realize that he may be 8000 but in human years after the sun and moon were created from the flower from of the two trees of Valinor as well as one fruit from the other of the two trees; they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(Oldest Elf in the world but even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. And as a microcosm they resembled the coalition of all the races of middle earth uniting under one banner which is another reason it sort of metaphysically set into motion the world uniting at the macrocosm ! Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother) The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤

The song Aragorn sings has huge importance! Here is the full version: “The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen; Of stars in shadow shimmering, Tinúviel was dancing there, To music of a pipe unseen And light of stars was in her hair And in her raiment glimmering There Beren came from mountains cold; And lost he wandered under leaves; And where the Elven-river rolled. He walked alone and sorrowing. He peered between the hemlock-leaves; And saw in wonder flowers of gold Upon her mantle and her sleeves And her hair like shadow following Enchantment healed his weary feet That over hills were doomed to roam And forth he hastened, strong and fleet And grasped at moonbeams glistening Through woven woods in Elvenhome She lightly fled on dancing feet And left him lonely still to roam In the silent forest listening He heard there oft the flying sound Of feet as light as linden-leaves Or music welling underground In hidden hollows quavering Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves And one by one with sighing sound Whispering fell the beachen leaves In the wintry woodland wavering He sought her ever, wandering far Where leaves of years were thickly strewn By light of moon and ray of star In frosty heavens shivering Her mantle glinted in the moon As on a hill-top high and far She danced, and at her feet was strewn A mist of silver quivering When winter passed, she came again And her song released the sudden spring Like rising lark, and falling rain And melting water bubbling He saw the elven-flowers spring About her feet, and healed again He longed by her to dance and sing Upon the grass untroubling Again she fled, but swift he came Tinúviel! Tinúviel! He called her by her elvish name And there she halted listening One moment stood she, and a spell His voice laid on her: Beren came And doom fell on Tinúviel That in his arms lay glistening As Beren looked into her eyes Within the shadows of her hair The trembling starlight of the skies He saw there mirrored shimmering Tinúviel the elven-fair Immortal maiden elven-wise About him cast her shadowy hair And arms like silver glimmering Long was the way that fate them bore O'er stony mountains cold and grey Through halls of ireon and darkling door And woods of nightshade morrowless The Sundering Seas between them lay And yet at last they met once more And long ago they passed away In the forest singing sorrowless” The true elvish version is far greater and so full of beauty & nuanced mournful sadness that’s break the hearts of mortals from its beauty and sadness so the true song has been sort of taboo and the mannish tongues that retell it is stated to only be a shadow beneath the tree of the true story!

There was a great episode of Pints with Aquanis on YT (w/Ben Reinhard) where they talk about LoTR and it’s parallels with a theistic worldview. Also, it was not initially influenced by Tolkien’s Christian faith but eventually it was during the course of him writing it. His approach however was not the same as CS Lewis who was far too forward and literal about his use of allegory (in the Narnia series for example). Tolkien on the other hand was far more creative and allusive about it. As the trilogy progresses consider how the ring could be symbolic of sin and how Gandolf, Frodo, and Aragorn could all be understood as a collective analog for Christ.

@gregw74
@gregw74 8 ай бұрын
@@ISavant I’m well aware. It would be argued that it’s a more subtle form of symbolism and allegory that wasn’t explicit or formally revealed by him. It wasn’t “in your face” and so literal and rigid like Lewis’s was. Without giving away too much, consider how Tolkien symbolized Industry and its often destructive effects on nature, the pain and perils of war (based on his own experience), the importance of human integrity and perseverance, the beauty of nature, hope, etc, etc. These are all forms of symbolism that are everywhere in the trilogy and integral to it. Additionally some of the deeper symbolism can be drawn out based on the fact that Tolkien said, “The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work”. Lastly, consider the Balrog being a kind of fallen angel and Gandolf himself being like “an incarnate angel” (according to Tolkien). The parallels are there, they’re just not overly explicit, which I’m grateful for.

Extended scenes at risk of being missed: 1• Frodo and Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin! (An epic scene with Gandalf in Rivendell was also removed as well.) 2. Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien, providing a parallel between the events of the Beren and Luthien and Aragorn's relationship with Arwen of which every reactor channel I’ve seen makes the connection and it pulls them into a deeper understanding of their relationship every single time. 3. Aragorn kneeling at his mother's grave, giving him some additional backstory for the viewer. 4. Gandalf explaining to Frodo about the corruptive power of the Ring, and how it will strain the Fellowship from the inside, foreshadowing Boromir's downfall. 5. Sam singing a lament for Gandalf, providing more emotional weight to Gandalf's death, referencing the start of the movie and strengthening the connection between him and the Hobbits ( also highlights Tolkien's love of song and poetry in the books). 6. Galadriel giving the gifts to the Fellowship, providing context for their appearance in later films, as well as drawing a parallel between Gimli's gift and the events of the Silmarillion (Fëanor & Galadriel). That’s just the beginning. Including several removed scenes between Aragorn & Galadriel and Aragorn with her husband Celeborn! 7• also the opening explaining Hobbits & their culture to the viewers, so they have a better understanding of these peoples we will be following which also was the direct full chapter called Concerning Hobbits.

Bilbo Walking Song: “Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June, Over grass and over stone, And under mountains in the moon. Roads go ever ever on Under cloud and under star, Yet feet that wandering have gone Turn at last to home afar. Eyes that fire and sword have seen And horror in the halls of stone Look at last on meadows green And trees and hills they long have known” The original version of the song is recited by Bilbo in the last chapter of The Hobbit, at the end of his journey back to the Shire. Coming to the top of a rise he sees his home in the distance, and stops and essentially sings what I shared above! There are three versions of this walking song in The Lord of the Rings. The first is sung by Bilbo when he leaves the Shire and is setting off to visit Rivendell: The Road goes ever on and on, Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The second version is identical except for changing the word "eager" to "weary" in the fifth line. It is spoken aloud, slowly, by Frodo, as he and his companions pause on their way to Crickhollow, looking beyond to lands that some of them have never seen before. The third version is spoken by Bilbo in Rivendell after the hobbits have returned from their journey. Bilbo is now an old, sleepy hobbit, who murmurs the verse and then falls asleep. The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can! Let them a journey new begin, But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet. 1977: The Hobbit (1977 film): Sections of the poem are sung during the trip through Mirkwood. It appears on the soundtrack titled "Roads". 1980: The Return of the King (1980 film): A song inspired by the poem is sung at the end of the film called "Roads Go Ever, Ever On". 1981: The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series): Bilbo sings the song as he leaves Bag End. It is sung by John Le Mesurier to a tune by Stephen Oliver. 1997: An Evening in Rivendell: The Tolkien Ensemble adapted an original melody to the song, composed by Caspar Reiff. 2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Parts of the song are sung by Gandalf in his first appearance, and also by Bilbo as he leaves Bag End. 2006: The Lord of the Rings Musical: The poem is the basis of the song "The Road Goes On" sung by Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin in the first act. 2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Lines of the poem partially make up the lyrics of The Last Goodbye, performed by Billy Boyd(Pippin) for the credits of the film. This is just stuff to know when you see the next films. Maybe seeing this will spark something you read here or in other people’s comments via future reactions to the other 2 films as well as the 3 The Hobbit movies!

Gandalf knew Bilbo possessed a magic ring, but didn't know which one. There were obviously many Great rings. and dozens of lesser crafts unmentioned at the start. It was only later that Gandalf started to grow suspicious that maybe Bilbo's ring was Sauron's One Ring which had been lost millennia before, he travelled to seek the records of Isildur's defeat of Sauron and see if the One Ring might have distinguishing markings. Gandalf had Frodo toss the ring in the fire to bring out the lettering which identified it according to Isildur.

Tolkien was a veteran of the First World War and many other battles such as The Battle Of Somme etc. his works of art were to give back to the England as a form of restoring lost mythologies that he himself was a master of since he was a top professor of philology at Oxford. He did ALOT of his writing while in the trenches during WWI during small “breaks” while down in those trench forts built into the ground. And while he eldest son was in the Second World War; his Lord Of The Rings writings was strictly created above all else to give his eldest something to read while stationed wherever he was stationed. I forgot that part. They sent letters back and forth about it all the time. He was also the one and only son that actually protected his fathers legacy and work. A lot of his other work were put together BY his son after his father passed away. It’s well worth to react to the documentary behind the scenes film the director and crew and cast created together as well as the interview with the son Christopher Tolkien who you get to sort of enjoy a nice indoor and outdoor chat for like what came to about 1-2 hours of wonderful footage from an era that really must not be forgotten. His work shed a light on things like The Finnish Kalevala, Norwegian Elder Edda, The Welsh Mabinogion, The Norwegian Nibelungen, The Indian Bhagvagita & Several Irish Folklore + other Cultural things! The man also restored and translated ancient relics for the governments as one everyone trusted. Much of what’s in our dictionary come from his efforts as well. Anytime he spoke & even posted several comments into the paper as an editorial or response to certain issues as a very involved man for the world and the environment everyone turned their head to listen to him as everyone knew his worth and respected him greatly. His works show how NOT to glorify war; shows in the films if you pay close attention while watching the next films. Sharing what you know now via the after thoughts at the end of the second film! Remember. Extended edition. There is a lot missed out on especially in the second movie regarding Boromir backstory which there is much more in the books but the films WANTED to keep more but the cinemas literally harangued him into making a “theatrical cut” which is why you have two versions. The real version and the “theatrical cut”. It was all to make more money for the company that is the theatres/cinemas. To get more showings in per day during the year. And believe me. People were camping outside and travelling the country to watch it MORE THAN ONCE. His creations literally lead to inspiring the most currently famous books games & movies we all literally wouldn’t have enjoyed and be touched to our souls core without him and his spiritually connected brilliance. That and he was a philologist professor at Oxford first and foremost which covers so many things. Not just linguistic. The man was a true genius and Jack of all trades but ultimately LOVED the simple life. The inspiration for Lord of the Rings was not any war, but author J.R.R. Tolkien's love of language. Especially Welsh, Finnish and Old English. He lamented the loss of any true English folklore, that was wiped out after the Norman invasion of 1066, so Tolkien wrote many books on these new "legends" he came up with himself. Much of which is centered around three languages he fully developed himself. Two Elven languages and Dwarvish. They all have alphabets, syntax and vocabularies and can be learned. Tolkien did draw upon his personal experience in the trenches of World War ONE, not Two, as inspiration for some parts, most notably, the Dead Marshes that Frodo and Sam and Gollum pass through in The Two Towers. But war was not the inspiration for the entire series. World Of Warcraft. Skyrim, Harry Potter, Diablo, D&D, even Warhammer and so forth wouldn’t have. Existed without taking inspiration from and or completely ripping off from Tolkien. Many great documentaries to react to about him also more about him and AWESOME stuff from the hours and hours of behind the scenes documentaries from the DVDs of the movies which are also on KZbin and I can send you a playlist to react to from top to bottom. I’d also like to explain Gandalf a bit too: Tolkien, drew alot of inspiration from the norse mythology. Magical rings, Gandalf (Staff elf in old norse), Gandalfs outfit (Ødin), Gandalfs title 'the grey wanderer' (Ødin), Shadowfaxe (The horses of day and night Rhimfaxe and Skinfaxe), Trolls, elves, dwarves etc. * Ødin had a legendary horse, Sleipnir, who had eight legs and was said to be one of the greatest horses known to the gods. Gandalf had Shadowfax, who had no equal among horses in Middle-earth and could understand the speech of men. * Ødin’s legendary gear-the spear Gungnir and the ring Draupnir-could have influenced Gandalf’s legendary sword Glamdring or, more likely, the magic staff he carries, while the ring possibly influenced Gandalf’s possession of the ring Narya (Sturlson 145). * Gandalf and Ødin both receive new wisdom as a result of sacrifice, as Gandalf is reincarnated after his fight with the Balrog, and Ødin gains power and wisdom after hanging himself on the tree Yggdrasil for nine days (Sigfusson 80-85). * One of the most apparent ways in which Gandalf and Ødin are alike is that they both take the shape of an old, grey beggar with a wide-brimmed hat and grey cloak when they wander the mortal world and deal with the inhabitants (Pitts 7). * Gandalf and Ødin are virtually reflections of each other, as can be observed through examining their gear and animal companions, the way they sacrificed themselves and were rewarded with wisdom, and the fact that they walk the earth as old men in tattered clothing. The Renowned Steeds of Gandalf and Odin Gandalf and Ødin both have renowned horses and staves with magical properties. Ødin carries the legendary spear Gungnir, which is said never to miss its mark when thrown (Sturlson 145); however, he also carries it as his staff when he wanders the earth as an old man. In the Poetic Edda, the Valkyrie Sigrdrifa advises Sigurd about the magical application of runes and tells him that there are runes inscribed on the tip of Gungnir (Sigfusson 291). This spear could be a parallel to Glamdring, the sword that was forged for the Goblin wars but is most likely influential to the staff Gandalf carries on his journeys. Strikingly similar to Shadowfax, Ødin possesses a legendary horse named Sleipnir, who has eight legs and can run on the ground and through the air at great speeds. This sounds very similar, in some ways, to Tolkien’s description of Shadowfax in The Two Towers, “Shadowfax tossed his head and cried aloud as if a trumpet had summoned him to battle. Then he sprang forward. Fire flew from his feet; night rushed over him” (Tolkien 228).

The Gandalf locked in the Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript-C]-The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear & despair, & perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, & to beg for his pardon & help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, & said that he would go & try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - & found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras. See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy & even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was the most important in the Legendarium & is the main reason the third age even exists) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down, but Saruman(Curumo) was the mostly already becoming weary due to what was called The along Defeat, magic bleeding out from the lands of middle earth and subsequently certain things become less and less possible and the elves begin to go west. Even the ones who never wished to leave middle earth and many of which were born here by the thousands.

The Shire is region in the Southwest of the subcontinent Eriador, in size about the same area as Great Britain. It was part of the lands of the North Kingdom of Arnor. It was given to the Hobbits when it had been depopulated by war and disease 400 years before Arnor fell. That's 1500 years ago by the Hobbits' reckoning. The only condition was that they keep the Great East-West Road, which ran through its Northern border, and its bridges in good repair. Hobbits are counted as Men but their lifecycle is different. They are not considered fully adult until the age of 33, the equivalent of our 21, and living to be 100 or more isn't unusual, though, like Men they are frail mentally and physically when they are elderly. Frodo shared a birthday with Bilbo and turned 33 on the day of the Party. The movies don't cover the timeline as it would have confused the audience. Alarmed by Bilbo's behavior, Gandalf spent 17 years learning about the ring and tracking how it came to be in Gollum's possession. Frodo was 50 when he left The Shire, but because he had the ring, he still seemed like a very young adult. Samwise Gamgee's family had worked as gardeners and domestics for the Baggins family for three generations and he was in his late 30s. Merry Brandybuck was 31, and nearly grown. Pippin Took was 29 and still an adolescent when he and Merry discovered their friend and cousin Frodo was starting a dangerous mission with only Sam for company. They are from the most prominent families of The Shire.

As a general rule, if something doesn't make sense in the movie, that's where Peter Jackson deviated from the books. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro. He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest Númenorean Man King [Elendil] the (greatest elf king [Gil-Galad] to still be around who Culturally still has “right” to hold such a title which after his death it didn’t make much sense to even hold the title anymore ontop of the fact their population was decimated over many thousands of years so it held no purpose to have a high king anymore) They had to double-team Sauron to strike down & slew the Maia’s body physical form, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse). Another one that bugs some people while in the Council of Elrond, Boromir reacts to Aragorn by talking as if some "Aragorn" was known to be the Lost King of Gondor. But in the book, neither Boromir nor any of his people would know any heir of Isildur exists 3,000 years later, and the name Aragorn would mean nothing to him. These were well-guarded secrets, and took some explaining in the council. (In the full lore, Aragorn, who's older than he looks, had decades before gone to Gondor and proven himself a hero. But did so under an alias, and then disappeared like some mysterious cowboy saving the town and riding off into the sunset. Boromir would've been a kid or not even born yet.)

The Peter Jackson movies are masterpieces but they do Isildur some injustice. In the books, while he doesn’t ‘succumb’, he spends his time being a fair ruler who practically gave power away to the people instead of being power hungry. He comes to realize that he is not powerful enough to truly bend the ring to his will. That it will eventually overcome him. Isildur resolves to give the ring to Elrond but is killed on the way to Rivendel. It's a tragic story of a man that tries to right his wrong but ultimately fails. In the books isildur literally repented and was about to bring the ring to Rivendell and apologize as he recognized it was beyond him even for a great numenorean connected to the faithful line of the mighty Elendil I preface the prologue & war, other depictions I LOVE, captured the themes WELL, the vibe of the whole trilogy! The significance of the duel between Elendil & Sauron was Nerffed; (He wasn’t some random old bloke in armour getting smacked around) This man was MIGHTY and gleaming with power which you’ll find out in the great videos you’ll soon react to with joy! * He and Gil-Galad; last true Elven King battled Sauron and slayed Sauron’s physical body and both died in the process. GilGalad was held high by the face for all free peoples to see as he then incinerated his bodily form to a crisp of ash! Isildur was part of the fight too but not as prominently and he just comes up to the body to cut the ring finger off and…. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro. * • He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest man-king and the greatest elven-king had to double-team Sauron to strike down his body, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse). Especially for elves the title of king has many meanings & by the Third Age there isn’t a population large enough to even attempt to such a thing as creating a unified kingdom which would put a target on their backs, let alone many of them are beyond all of that anyway as it’s seen as doing more harm than anything good. * They also seen what happened when the elves fell upon the swords of their own hubris and passion no matter if it was for the right reasons some of the time. That it always ended up in some sort of tragedy which sometimes even damaged the earth itself. They had long known about what’s called the Long Defeat as ever since Morgoth’s marring of the land itself; pouring his remnants into it that caused the “magic” to slowly drain away from the land itself which is sad because for ages several clans of elves were born there. even the greatest ancestors were “born” in middle earth awakening to the stars ! Many of who are left have accepted the next phase of their life which is to become councillors, healers and loremasters to those within the heart to listen and the desire to learn. But above all the guardians and custodians of several things and the world itself for as long as they can remain!❤ The elves “exist” as long as the world does. And Tolkien made it obvious in many ways that it’s our world as he restored Anglo Saxon culture/Mythologies and folklore, and their languages too alongside Irish, Welsh and Finnish mythologies too. Especially Norwegian(of which I am) This is what Amazon (the show that shall not be named) didn’t deliver either [[AKA the actual story which inspired everything we love into existence with games and movies and books and so forth. Skyrim, elder scrolls, oblivion, Diablo, and world of Warcraft and D&D. And Game Of Thrones was hugely inspired by Tolkien… yet as the godfather of everything and the heart of what caused many peoples lives to be saved cannot get the justice it deserves for adaptations? People literally conquered cancer because of the books and the trilogy, the books were read to their children for years. All 25 of them. The man was a hugely respected scholar and professor in the world. Translated ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs and petroglyphs and so forth for the government etc. (JRR Tolkien even rejected being recruited into the CIA several times & he wrote everyone by letter and referenced the dudes who came to him as “little boys who knew not what they got themselves into” which showed his fearlessness.). The readers of the trilogy that came out are who he writes back to despite always replying to everyone back and forth. Many people have shared the stories regarding these conversations which were past down throughout the family lines of the people who had a personal relationship with Tolkien which was hundreds of people when he was alive. Thousands. (Some are in video format too or happened to be shared later on in the video or comes up during a video about him and his work. Especially nowadays when many of us came out of the woodwork to defend professor Tolkiens legacy from amazons money grubbing hands and so forth. Giving many channels a new lease on life where some make Tolkien related content now amongst other things they create content wise.

The current ages of the characters: Frodo Baggins is 53. Samwise Gamgee is 38. Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) is 36. Peregrin Took (Pippin) is 28. Gandalf (Olòrin) - is 15,000 (in his current form. Aragorn is (surprise Censor). Legolas is 2,931. Gimli is 139. Boromir son of Denethor II is 41! Elves aged differently than men and dwarves. They did not suffer from old age or disease, and their lives were not limited by a fixed number of years. Instead, they aged very slowly, remaining youthful and vigorous for much longer than mortals. Though they could voluntarily leave their bodies and the ultimate thing that can kill them is grief or Sorrow that’s palpable enough for them to just not wish to live anymore. Here are the ages of some of the main Elves of the Third Age, as of the War of the Ring: 1. Elrond Half-elven - over 8,586 while his daughter is 3,777 old! 2. Galadriel - around 20,000 3. Celeborn - 20,000; (he may have been alive before her birth or around the same time as his lineage that he lived amongst his forefathers and kin might suggest he is older but they are both very ancient.) 4. Glorfindel (replaced scenes with Arwen in the movies but it helped prop up Aragorn’s Film character progression. I still think they could have incorporated them both in the scenes somehow and included the other important stuff that went on in that forest meeting Glorfindel and his company of elves)- he’s over 2,000 (although he had been re-embodied after dying in the First Age which means his Fëa {spirit} is far older than 2000.) 5. Thranduil - over 8000, (as he was born in the First Age and lived in Doriath with his father Oropher; Thranduil is also the father of Legolas. (As Haldir mentioned him when speaking to Legolas in Lothlòrien during the first movie’s extended scene. He shares the same kindred elven clan as to Celeborn(Galadriel’s husband). It's worth noting that Elves could choose to die voluntarily, usually when they grew weary of life or when they had fulfilled their purpose in the world. However, their spirits would then depart to the Halls of Mandos and could eventually be re-embodied in a new body I meant to add that Frodo was 51 when he left due to the whole Gandalf coming back to the shire after many years. that explains why his youthful appearance didn’t change much throughout the entire film!

Recall, please, Sauron did NOT DIE when Isildur separated The One Ring from Sauron's hand; clearly, it's said in the script, "Sauron ... was *defeated*." Regarding the LotR wizards' staves and their respective powers: Harry Potter's wand isn't all that large or impressive, but it IS "IN TUNE" WITH THE OWNER; "the wand chooses the wizard"! Such a poignant, forlorn look on Gandalf's face when he hears Frodo say, "I will take the ring into Mordor'; Gandalf knows it's Frodo's fate to actually do so, he laments that fact, oh, so deeply.

The whole concept of "wizards chucking fireballs" comes from Dungeons & Dragons ... just watch a few of the "wizard" movies from the 50s/60s ... they CONTROL and DOMINATE and MANIPULATE ... [From personal D&D experience I can assure you that "being flashy in your displays of power" JUST MAKES YOU A PRIMARY TARGET for archers!]

Morgoth, AKA Melkor, (Basically Satan), could not make anything New. So to make evil creatures, he distorted good Creatures, using torture, mutilation and breeding. Even Sauron, the Main bad guy of the Lord of the Rings books (Satan's Right hand) was not "evil" to begin with. This means that Orcs, Trolls, Dragons, and the Fell Beast, are living beings with souls. [Saruman the Wizard : "Do you know how the Orcs first came into being? They were elves once, taken by the dark powers, tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life."] [Treebeard the Ent : "Trolls were 'Made in mockery' of Ents, as Orcs were of Elves, though not necessarily from Entish stock.] [Narration describing the 'Fell Beast' : "The great shadow descended like a falling cloud. And behold! it was a winged creature; if bird, then greater than all other birds, and it was naked, and neither quill nor feather did it bear, and its vast pinions were as webs of hide between horned fingers; and it stank. A creature of an older world maybe it was, whose kind, lingering in forgotten mountains cold beneath the Moon, outstayed their day, and in hideous eyrie bred this last untimely brood, apt to evil."]

You don’t understand wizard fights because it wasn’t in the books so I doubt Peter Jackson knew how to show it. I agree it looked silly. The purist in me says leave that out and give me the BarrowDown chapter instead.

congrats on the new subs for posting a LOTR reaction. i live in NZ, where this was filmed. I actually live about 45 minutes away from the shire (which still exists, you can even go have second breakfast or an evening banquet there), and absolutely no CGI was used, that's just what this country looks like 😎

Of course you are very correct about crazy people online. As you can imagine I had to the abandoned hope of online anonymity many years ago with what I do. But I imagine many of friends are considered to be “online crazies”. Of course there is “crazy” then there is “crazy” If you are into Infosec you might enjoy this series I’m starting where I interview the OGs of Infosec and the hacking tools that inspired today’s tools. m.youtube.com/@markbaggett

Actually the ring didnt give you the power of invisibility.. Whatever your strong characters or your big talent, the ring made it stronger and bigger.. For example.. If the ring kept by a dworf, it make them so much greedy and tough.. Because that is dworf's characteristic attribute.. the hobbits are so small and so silent.. Because of this the ring made them invisible because in normal life they are so tiny and almost invisible.. The dark lord sauron's most characteristic power is the control minds of creatures.. The ring made his power so sharp and more powerfull.. You can think like that.. For example your eyes are sharp and you can run so good.. If you had this ring, it made your talent so powerfull.. You could see miles of miles away, beyond the ocean and you could run incredible fast.. It is kind of like that..
