This movie came out shortly after the serial killings that terrorized Gainesville FL while I was attending the University of Florida. That experience made this movie that much more intense.

Jack Crawford (played by the wonderfully laconic Scott Glenn) is the third side of your favorite-character trifecta. Agent Burroughs is the guy who suggests that Starling wait for Crawford in Crawford's office. Great reaction!

We were late to the theater the first time I watched this movie back in 1991, and the only seats left were in the front row. it enhanced the ghastliness of certain scenes in this film.

I recently saw an interview with Anthony Hopkins, and in it he talked about his acting method - he literally reads a script 500 times in order to have the written words and actions memorized so that he can just BE the character without having to think about it while filming. He also said he was recently diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and he believes that is the reason why he processes his acting the way he does. I think it's fascinating.

I knew (but had forgotten about) his method of reading the script 500 times… but I hadn’t heard about his autism diagnosis.

This movie scared the crap out of me! Dr Lecter and Buffalo Bill were absolutely terrifying. The last scene when Dr Lecter says he's having an old friend for dinner as his arch enemy from the prison, Dr Chilton, gets off the plane and Lecter follows leisurely him is just creepy, knowing what he means when he says having an old friend for "dinner".

The thing that makes Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Dr Lecter so unique and fantastic is he brings something so charming and compelling to the character that you can’t quite be completely disgusted and revolted by him. He intrigues you, he drags you in, and that’s what’s your undoing.

For a real crime story, I recommend In Cold Blood. Many of the scenes were filmed on location. The movie is based on the novel by Truman Capote, it follows the novel quite well. The crime shocked the nation, at the time. It intrigued Capote enough to travel from NYC to Kansas to cover the investigation, etc. he interviews the criminals, etc, get a good idea of the psychological background of them as a result.

Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were actually never in the same room together during filming!! (If you notice, they’re never in the same camera shot.) They’ve joked in interviews that this was because they were too afraid of each other, to be in the same room.😄

PSYCHO and THE BIRDS by Alfred Hitchcock are also trend setters and each is a masterpiece in its own right -at the time they both blew everyone away 1960/1963 WAY AHEAD OF THE TIMES -some say helped to usher in the revolutionary 60's that came into being as i recall...

1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real. 2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released. 3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film. 4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice. 5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late😇 Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in "Rambo First Blood II". A great first time/share. 6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony. 7. In the book Crawford did have "a thing" for Clarice. 8. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice 9. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.

I don’t know if the character of Hannibal Lecter was based on anyone real. But the character of Buffalo Bill borrowed inspiration from the crimes of Ed Gein. He also enjoyed making things of human skin - including said woman-suit from the movie. But he also made a belt made out of nipples, a chair from human faces, and a lampshade of skin. He also had a soup bowl fashioned from a human skull. His crimes inspired several of the worst movie monsters, including Buffalo Bill.

I think "Red Dragon" (prequel) was better than "Hannibal" (sequel). Edward Norton matched Jodie Foster as the compelling protagonist.

The layout of that basement continues to defy my understanding; it seems like it's 5x the size of the house itself. The key to Lecter is his ego. He enjoys toying with Clarice, but he also wants her to understand his superior intelligence, and in that way she can manipulate HIM into assisting with the case.

She didn’t follow Dr Chilton’s rules about visiting Lecter, and because Lecter has absolutely no respect for Chilton he appreciated that and kept talking with her. That, and because she was polite and courteous with him. If Clarice followed the rules, Lecter probably would’ve clammed up right at the beginning

This reaction did not disappoint! Buffalo Bill and the senator's daughter were romantically involved during the shoot. Acting! Anthony Hopkins watched this movie in a theater while sitting next to his mother. At some point he realized that she was looking at him, he glanced over and saw horror in her eyes. Acting!

Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster gave such excellent performances, as did Buffalo Bill (I forget his name). Interviewed later, Anthony Hopkins said he'd always felt that he wasn't a good actor. If I'm not mistaken, he had been an alcoholic, but I don't know the timeline. Anyway, this film certainly proved him wrong on that point. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's a shame, but typical, that they wouldn't pay Foster equal pay for the sequels. They were good, but would've been even better had she been cast for the role.

"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." Eww... Fava beans. Gross. 😝 Fun Fact: The rules for speaking with Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is the same as the rules for speaking with Ethan Powell in Instinct (1999), a role also played by Hopkins. Awards Milestone Fact: This is one of three movies to win the top five Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. The others are It Happened One Night (1934) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975). What Script Fact: Jodie Foster claims that during the first meeting between Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, Sir Anthony Hopkins's mocking of her southern accent was improvised on the spot. Foster's horrified reaction was genuine since she felt personally attacked. She later thanked Hopkins for generating such an honest reaction. Law Enforcement Cooperation Fact: The real-life FBI's Behavioral Science Unit assisted in the making of this movie. The FBI saw it as a potential recruiting tool to hire more female agents. They were very impressed by this movie's accuracy in depicting criminal investigations, serial killers, and their victims. However, they disagreed with Clarice (Jodie Foster) discovering Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) on her own, because inexperienced agents would never be sent out alone on dangerous assignments.
