That was a good catch on the title sequence but you chose the wrong time period. This movie is in fact the remake. (the film you saw a thumbnail for is a prequel) Carpenter remade a black and white movie from 1951 called The Thing From Another World. The title reveal is the same as the 1951 film.

To me the lack of answers is what makes this movie and this monster especially fascinating. We don't know anything about the Thing's motives. Was it piloting the spaceship we saw or did it infest it and attack its pilots? Was landing on Earth an intentional invasion or an accident, and does it want to deliberately infect the whole planet or is that simply a by-product of its biological imperatives? Is it capable of intelligent thought regardless of its form, or does intelligence only manifest when it replicates something like a human brain? Is it simply a single lifeform with linked consciousnesses residing in different bodies, or does physically splitting off create a new and independent Thing? And if the latter, do multiple Things have the same agenda? Would they cooperate with one another or would they compete for resources? Would two Things attack one another? Would two Things even recognize one another, if they are perfect replicas of their host lifeforms? Can Things communicate with us and simply choose not to? The maddening lack of clarity amplifies the horrific nature of the scenario. This is the third time this story was adapted. It was also filmed in 1951 as THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (same scenario, different kind of monster) and in 1972 as HORROR EXPRESS (takes a lot of liberties with the story but is essentially the same). The 2011 film is not an official remake but a prequel to this film, but in effect plays out like a remake. The other John Carpenter films, PRINCE OF DARKNESS and IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, are not true sequels but deal with similar themes and so have been retroactively declared to be Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy."

What I love too is we actually know less about the thing than most viewers realize. In particular, MacReady makes a lot of guesses/assumptions that may or may not be true. Like the blood test...MacReady was just making a guess. There was no evidence that he was right, so all we can say for sure is that Palmer was a thing, and that Garry was not a thing (since he was murdered by Blair later, and if he were a thing he couldn't have been killed like he was). If we discount the blood test as inconclusive (which it was), Mac can still be a thing too. It's a film about paranoia, and it works.
@livingbeing1113
@livingbeing1113 2 жыл бұрын
Well said. I think it was sort of a supercell or bio weapon that infested and consumed who was piloting that spaceship, and accidentally crashed on earth. Like you said, i don't think it's hostile in nature, but his biological imperatives are to consume and bind with other lifeforms, assimilating them and their knowledge. But of course it will attack if confronted. Rest is all speculation like you say. In the 1982 movie clearly doesn't want to reveal itself and communicate, probably because it felt extreme hostility from humans. It also learned to be more patient and manipulative, in the 2011 prequel it was far more aggressive. It's extremely intelligent and with millenia of universal's knowledge, as shown with Blair building a ship in few hours with spare parts, or with how it can disguise itself between us, copying the host's personality perfectly. Regarding the blood's test, it can be inconclusive, the Thing can possibly learn from it and not reveal itself even if attacked with heat.
@Ocrilat
@Ocrilat 2 жыл бұрын
@@livingbeing1113 Yeah, there is surprisingly little we 'know' about it. Even your interesting explanation on how it got to Earth and what it was like is essentially guesswork/fan fiction. But we all do this (imagine backstory and fill in the holes), and it's what most of us love about the film...coming up with ideas and throwing theories around. This really is a thinking-person's film. It's also why I generally like the fans of the film...most enjoy the process and can argue without getting personal or butthurt. It's pretty rare on-line.

I think there's a version of that but I completely agree. It's a little cheesy lol. That and there's a different ending that shows the dog running away.. either that or that's played after the credits. When the dog starts to assimilate the other dog one gets away so I guess that's where the idea comes from. I love the fact that this movie remains a complete mystery and people keep discussing it. Was it Macready or Chiles? Pick one, it's left up to the imagination. John Carpenter is a genius!

Prince of Darkness is a good movie and I'd add the movie, "They Live", also by John Carpenter to your list to watch. John Carpenter did make Halloween, which many still believe was the beginning of the slasher horror movies but Carpenter personally knew the director of the movie "Black Christmas", which they had briefly talked and Carpenter asked him what kind of movie would he make as a sequel to Black Christmas and the director replied that he'd call it Halloween. But it was John Carpenter who ended up making Halloween.

Fun fact: this film is actually a remake/reboot of the original 1950's film "The Thing From Another World," directed by Howard Hawks. Coolest thing about the original was a particular scene where the group of protagonists encounter the alien monster and set it on fire, resulting in a full body fire burn stunt which was, at the time, one of the longest full body sustained fire burns in cinema history. Veteran stuntman Tom Steele wore an asbestos suit with a special fiberglass helmet with an oxygen supply underneath. He used a one hundred percent oxygen supply. Which was potentially very dangerous (Oxygen does not burn. It is not flammable, but it is an oxidizer. Oxygen needs fire, so it is dangerous to use around something that is burning, because it will help the fire to burn more quickly.)

The Movie with Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Not a Remake or a Sequel. (Very LONG Post Below) It is actually a Prequel (which is also called "THE THING") to the John Carpenter Movie. They made the Prequel back in 2011 and it also takes place in Antarctica back in 1982 and 3 days before the events of the John Carpenter Movie and it is the story of what happened to the Norwegian Base (the base where the Dog-Thing came from). The Prequel stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. Now I myself actually do like the 2011 Prequel although it is not anywhere even close to being as good as the John Carpenter Movie. The Prequel definitely has a lot of flaws and it also unfortunately has got a lot of really bad CGI in it as well. The reason why it has the bad CGI is because the makers of the Prequel wanted to do Practical Effects in it just like the John Carpenter Movie did (they wanted to stay true to that given how popular the Practical Effects in the John Carpenter Movie are) and they did indeed do Practical Effects when they filmed the Prequel. However, after filming on the Prequel was finished and it then went into Post-Production, The Studio watched the Prequel and for some reason, they did not like the Practical Effects in it and so very late into Post-Production, The Studio hired the guys who did the CGI for the Movie "DISTRICT 9" to come in and cover over a majority of the Practical Effects in the Prequel with the CGI which they did. The fact that it was done so late into Post-Production (like almost at the last minute) is 1 of the main reasons why I think the CGI looks so bad in the Prequel. Still though, I myself do like the Prequel and if that sort of thing (really bad CGI) is not something that bothers you then you should check the Prequel out whenever you have the chance. Again, The Prequel does have a lot of flaws along with the really bad CGI and so when you go into it, don't expect to see a Movie that is better or on the exact same level as the John Carpenter Movie. Basically if you do watch the Prequel then when you go into it, just lower your expectations for it.

I’ve heard pretty good theories on each side of the childs or MacReady debate and I’ve always felt like if one of them is the thing stronger evidence leans toward Childs. I think what throws myself and a lot of people off is why does macready laugh after Childs takes a swig? Is he the thing smiling at his victory of now infecting Childs or does he know that Childs is human or not and he’s relieved? We’ll never know.

Written by John W.Campbell Jr. The first adaptation was made in 1951 (called The Thing from Another World), and its a very basic version of the original book story, but still a fun watch. The 1982 version is a lot closer to the original story. The 2011 prequel was ok, but suffered because the studio made the terrible decision to replace all the practical special effects with CGI. All carpenter movies should be watched! Specially Assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, escape from LA, Starman, Big Trouble in little CHINA, they Live, The Fog, Eyes of Laura Mars, Prince of Darkness, and others. Carpenter resented Spielberg for ET AND it took all the money and awards. But Carpenter had the last laugh! Because this movie is much better! Carpenter made his own alien love story with Starman! Carpenter also is the master of the minimalist creepy theme music! Kurt did 4 movies with carpenter! He even did an early TV Elvis movie, for John! This is one of the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Plus Alien and Bladerunner, which are all related, by actors, and some other technicalities. Also the brilliance here is, when the thing busts out, it comes out of u anywhere, any size, shape, etc. The dog trainer should have won an Oscar and the special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a twenty one year old college student!😮😮😮. Pro tip, carpenter is still thinking about a sequel! But there's still a massive tie in here with Alien, predator Bladerunner this , and a movie with Kurt Russell called, Soldier! They are related by the beings called Engineers, for Aliens, Terminator, predator, Bladerunner this, and a movie with Kurt Russell movie called, Soldier. Common companies, technology, Replicants, synthetic humans, beings that Engineers created, and even writers and producers! And this is why, prosthetic, robotics, special/ effects, practical effects, are way better than CGI! The three main corporations... Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮 Kurt better have kept the hat! Also the total brilliance here is, once u have been infected, even from just a scratch, u have no idea when u are being taken over! One of the absolute must watch Carpenter films u must watch! Along with Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, Big Trouble in little CHINA, assault on precinct 13. Go with those, and his Halloween stuff, Eyes of Laura Mars, They Live, The Fog, Christine, In the mouth of madness, prince of darkness, memoirs of an invisible man, vampires! There are critics who say this is Carpenter's version of Communism Socialism, etc , and how it takes over countries, much as a film in the 50s by the same name, i think...

Nice reaction-video. Interesting that you managed to figure out some stuff, despite a lack of clues. Speaking of clues, you might want to check out the movie _"Clue"_ ... it's a Murder-Mystery/Who-Done-It thing; no real horror in it, but it does have suspense in it, as you try to figure out *who's* killing everybody, and *why?!?* The ending is a bit crazy, but fun (& funny)! It can be a bit confusing at first, as it's a 'period piece' - kinda - as it takes place somewhere in the 50s, so some of the comments folks make seem a little odd until you realize the time-period. Check it out! Don't know if you've seen _"Alien"_ or _"Aliens"_ (sequel), but if not ... I think they're right up your alley. They're Science-Fiction/Horror movies, with the first being heavy on Suspense/Creepiness, while the second is more Suspense/Action & Drama. I definitely think you'll really like them!

Yeah this movie is built on trust and you don't know who to trust and you don't know who is who it's a great movie for that aspect and the ending leaves it up to your imagination of what happened to those two guys did they fight it out or did they die from the cold and hypothermia did a rescue team find one of them did the world become infected and like a sequel in your head type of idea who knows there's a lot of theory videos on KZbin about the ending of this movie definitely have to look this stuff up

Loved your reaction btw lol and got a kick out of you holding our little plushy thing that's cute ☺ Yeah this was a remake of the original from the 50's, then in 2011 they did a prequel to this film. That one had way more CGI though than this one with practical effects and animatronics. Hey was curious what's your name again? lol I know you've said it it's not Claire is it or Mileena? Maybe Carissa? I know it's a more rarer name lol. Also I'd recommend 2 other great 80's films, The Blob(1988) and also a remake and The Hidden also 1988 lol. I think you'd like both if I haven't recommended them already haha.

The 2011 film is not a remake, but rather a prequel set at the Norwegian camp, but this is not at all made obvious by the weird decision to use the same name as well as the same poster design. It's okay, but not in the same league as this film.

Bet you're glad you didn't have snacks, huh? Lol. This is one of John Carpenters finest films. He had many, though. This is the first in the "John Carpenters' Trilogy Of Apocalypse Terror". None of the films are related (except by director). However, they're all in the same theme; the Apocalypse. Movie 2: "Prince Of Darkness" (1987) Movie 3: "In The Mouth Of Madness" (1993) They're all ingenious in their own property, however, discovering that, in some insane way, they're all low-key connected? It adds to all of the plots of the trilogy

So you know, UWF...by the end of the movie- BOTH, Mac and Childs are human...they just don't trust each other( we'll see their fate in the soon, upcoming sequel). Also...the Thing( 2011) is the prequel movie to this one and shows us what happened with the Swedish research team and their perspective...the Swedish people are who was chasing the dog in the start of this movie and the wrecked research base they found. For the THING 2011- they actually recreated all the 1982 sets through pictures they had on file.

But I would love to see you react to more of the movies. That many of us consider the classic or classic Hollywood films. Let's say from the 1950s to the early mid 80's. Such films as the Blob, The Great Escape, Dr Zhivago, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock. Death Wish (the original starring Charles Bronson), The original Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, The Sting, Paper Moon, Capricorn One, Dr. Strangelove, Planet of the Apes ( the original film series ). Along with a host of many others. You are obviously very gifted at what you do. And are very easy on the eyes. The camera of course loves you. Take care stay safe and be well !

Fire does kill the thing, but since every piece of it can operate solo, then you have to burn every cell. A human only needs a significant portion of their body injured, such as being burnt to kill the whole organism. But with the thing as long as a portion survives, even down to a cell, then it can survive.

The 2011 movie is NOT a remake. It is a prequel. It takes place at the Norwegian camp. The story was good but the producers got in the way of making that movie. They had shot about 90% of it already with practical effects like the 1982 movie but the producers turned into 3 year olds and demanded all the effects be CGI and gave the effects guys as little time as possible to do them and thus they didn't look all that good. The effects of this movie were 1000x better than the 2011 movie. Had the producers just shut the fuck up and let them keep the practical effects it probably would have been accepted better.
