38:55 The way I see Loki's scheme regarding Laufey is that it is all a setup to prove a point, just like his earlier scheme was to set up a situation where Thor would prove to Odin that he wasn't ready to be king. Loki basically sets the stage for the worst case scenario that Odin could probably imagine - his foundling child, the political pawn, has betrayed him, allying with his true father to kill Odin. Except Loki kills his birth father Laufey while declaring himself "a son of Odin". It is the ultimate declaration of loyalty to Odin, a definitive proof.

Absolutely agree! I just dearly wished that Odin would have said more. I mean, Thor says "When I'm king I'll hunt the monsters down and slay them all. Just as you did father." Unless Odin agrees, he really ought to have addressed his son calling another people "monsters" that he wants to genocide. Odin could have even woven that into his lesson about kingship, and said something like "The Frost Giants are not monsters my son. They are people, the same as us. But their king led them to war and destruction for conquest and glory, and all have suffered for it. That is why a wise king never seeks out war, but must always be ready for it." But Odin says nothing, and lets his sons think that another people are just monsters, a people one of them secretly belong to.

47:23 Loki's initial scheme was to "protect the realms from [Thor's] idiot rule a while longer". As he tells the Warriors Three and Sif "[Thor] is arrogant, he is reckless, he is dangerous. Is that what Asgard needs from it's king?" And he is absolutely right. Odin has failed to truly prepare Thor for kingship, and it's fairly obvious that Thor lacks the maturity for it at this point, and will bring about war. I don't think Loki is completely altruistic in his initial scheme however, I think it's in large part driven by a desire to see Thor knocked off the pedestal Odin seems to have put him on, so that they can be equals. Because if Odin isn't blind to Thor's flaws, then why does he favour him? Loki has no good answer to that yet ("You know it all makes sense now, why you favoured Thor all these years"), only that something must then be wrong with him, and that's not something anyone wants to face. So I don't think Loki is wrong in wanting Thor's flaws acknowledged and his coronation postponed. But what about the way he goes about it? He helps a small group of Jotuns (3?) to their certain doom at the hands of the Destroyer, and a few guards (2?) get killed by the Jotuns. Those lives are all on Loki I think. Can a prince sacrifice those lives for the "greater good of the kingdom"? I'm not sure, and I don't know if Loki had an alternative or not. Could he have talked to Odin about his concerns? Had he already attempted that or not? Or did he go straight for the scheme because he assumed he would be dismissed as a jealous brother, or because he thought Odin would need irrefutable proof? Or does Loki get some joy out of successfully manipulating the situation according to his plans, without considering the lives of mere guards and Jotuns?

Gotten to 15:09 with your discussion of Thor. I think it's important to realise just how much Thor is comparing himself to Odin: "When I'm king, I'll hunt the monsters down and slay them all, just as you did father" "March into Jotunheim as you once did, teach them a lesson, break their spirits so they'll never dare try to cross our borders again!" "The Jotuns must learn to fear me, just as they once feared you" Thor seems to be trying emulate his father, rather than listening to his father's word. Children will do as you do, not as you say.

The scene in the weapons vault between Odin and Loki is also one of my favourite scenes, if not my favourite, in all the MCU. It is so well written and acted, so emotional and complex. It almost feels out of place, like it belongs in another movie. There is so much information buried in that scene (like "another stolen relic" hinting at Asgard's habit of taking artefacts from other peoples), and it tells us so much about Loki and his relationship with his family - feeling lesser and never understanding why, doubting his father's love, and now thinking he finally gets it, because he was never Odin's son but a Jotun, a monster. It sets up Loki's villainous turn so well and sympathetically, you get his desperation to prove himself a son of Odin and belonging to Asgard, even when he commits patricide and attempt genocide against his birth people to get it.

39:35 About Odin not wanting Jotunheim destroyed. Odin was obviously deeply upset that Thor started a war with Jotunheim. But he also says to Loki: "I thought we could bring about an alliance, bring about a permanent peace, through you. But those plans no longer matter." That can very, very easily be heard as "I had a plan for permanent peace, but those plans no longer matter now that we are at war, peace is no longer an option". What are the options then? Loki's plan involves destroying Jotunheim for good without the loss of a single "innocent" Aesir life, only the "monsters" will suffer. The war will be won swiftly and completely. I can see why Loki would think Odin would be pleased by his ingenuity and ruthless cunning, and consider him a worthy son and heir for this. Why shouldn't he kill the "race of monsters", when in Asgard Jotuns are "the monsters that parents tell their children about a night", and Loki has listened to Thor talk about "hunting the monsters down and slay them all", without Odin correcting that assumption that Jotuns are monsters. I think Odin really messed up in not teaching his sons that Jotuns are people just like Aesir, and being enemies doesn't make the opposing side monsters or lesser.

@@anycullen21 Ah yes! It is so heartbreaking to me that Loki could very understandably have believed that his brother would kill him when he also learned of the truth. It is my headcanon that Loki came to suspect that Heimdall knew the truth, and told the Warriors 3 + Sif. Heimdall is all-seeing and controls the Bifrost. He could easily have been watching Odin on Jotunheim when be found baby Loki, and would most likely have transported Odin and baby Loki to Asgard. Heimdall committed treason by letting the Warriors 3 and Sif use the Bifrost to go get Thor, against both Odin's (banishment of Thor) and Loki's (let no one use the Bifrost) command. I think it's possible that Loki could have feared for his life at this point.

Good reaction guys. This movie so great about good father/son relationships. When we are younger, we make LOTS of mistakes and a good father tries to teach you these lessons. Though father's punishments are harsh, they are done with love and hopes that you see their wisdom. Thor had to learn that seeking glory through war was not the way and that as man you do NOT need to prove you are worthy through combat, but by being a caring man who thinks about those around you. Odin did give his son a way out through the spell on the hammer. He wanted his son to find his path. Then end dialog is so important because it so true. From Thor finally realizing his father's wisdom to him admitting he has much to learn, because when we are younger, we think we know a lot, but wisdom tells you you will knowledge grows through experience. :)

I think the comment about Odin making mistakes as a father instead as just calling him a "bad father" is on point... As far as we know and what's been shown to us, they never treated Loki with nothing but love... Thor always treated him and loved him like a brother, with all of Thor's flaws: he was rash, cocky even but he never miss treated Loki... Frigga (the mother) loved Loki very much and even taught him magic and gave him the knowledge of it and care... Odin raised and treated Loki like a son as far as we know, not telling him about his true parenting was a mistake for sure, specially since Loki knowing that from a young age would've probably made him abandon any hope of being crowned king and maybe he would've dropped that ambition; but there is all the evidence that Loki's ill intentions towards his family were one-sided on his part... His brother loved him and apart from some sibling rivalry Thor never miss treated him and never even knew that he wasn't really his brother, and the parents even knowing he wasn't their son they still treated him as such and loved him.

This comment has SPOILERS for movies after Thor… I have to disagree. Odin was a terrible father. He raised his first child to be a killer then banished her. Never told his sons about her. Never told Loki he was “adopted” and proceeded to teach them both to hate Jotuns knowing Loki was Jotun!! When Loki confronts him, he conveniently goes into a coma. When he does come out of it, Loki is hanging from the bridge, begging his father for something (respect, love, forgiveness) and all Odin says is NO? Really? Loki let go, thinking he’d killed himself but ends up with Thanos and we all know how nice Thanos is. Did anyone ever try to find out what happened to Loki during that time and what led him to attack NY? Nope. As for Thor, he was a bully. He treats his warrior friends better than Loki! Tells him to “know his place” and when those friends and Heimdall disrespect Loki…also a prince of Asgard… Thor does nothing about it. Thor was the big dumb jerk jock that everyone loves and Loki was the smart nerdy goth kid everyone teased. When Loki came back from attacking NY, what did Odin do? Apologize for anything or discuss anything because Loki was so shattered after the revelation of being Laufeys son? NO! He just banished him! The end? Thor…same. When he saw Loki on earth he basically told him to get over it.Did Loki deserve punishment, yes. But he deserved acknowledgment for the pain they caused him too. Nobody acknowledged the lies they told or the pain they caused. Frigga did a little bit. She show both of her sons love and affection and taught Loki magic but she also did everything Odin said. Banished Thor without telling her. Imprisoned Loki and wasnt going to allow him to see her. Sorry but King or no king he had no right to do that to her and she was a strong woman, she should’ve told him to fuck off. Not only did he not allow Loki to go to her funeral but they didn’t even tell him in person!! Neither Thor or Odin could set aside things for that devastating news? They sent a freaking guard! And when Thor does go see Loki to ask for help, he won’t talk to Loki about their mother. In Ragnarok, Odin tells them they have a sister, tells them to deal with it and dies! On Sakaar, Loki goes to Thor to talk and Thor is upset about being lied to but does he talk to Loki? Does he tell Loki now he knows how he felt all those years, sorry? No Thor sulks and ignores Loki. Later in the elevator scene he tells Loki he had always thought the world of him. Oh really? When was that? Because he never showed or told Loki that. The last thing he said to Loki as they were thrashed by Thanos, is that he’s the worst brother. And then Loki died after those last words Thor said to him. The whole family was dysfunctional but Odin was a total dick

@@kimberlyjeanne9456 SPOILERSS!! You should put a couple of this spaces on your comment with spoilers So Loki is the innocent victim of this family? LOL I do agree with some of the mistakes you pointed out but IMO you completely stretched and twisted every single event and blew things out of proportion in order to defend Loki... Suggesting that Thor never really loved his brother and was abusive towards him, that Frigga was a terrible mother and that Odin was intentionally set of hurting and mistreating this person that he brought up as his son, this is all an extreme way to relieve Loki of the responsibilities of his actions. Did Odin made mistakes, big ones like with Hela and Loki's real lineage? Of course... But you are painting Odin as this evil being that rescued Loki with the intent of abusing him for all his life or something like that. And once again, your way of turning every action in Loki's favor, even the ones that are a direct result of his actions, like the events after his invasion of Earth, tell me a lot about your views on this. So we are going to have to agree to disagree.
@samskewes1298
@samskewes1298 3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to have to disagree with you on some of the stuff you said. Frigga in my opinion is the only one to treat him fairly and well. Odin on the other hand did love Loki but that does not mean he treated him well. Loki even states that Odin always favored Thor and that can do a lot of damage to a child seeing your sibling being treated better than you. Plus Odin taught Loki that the frost giants were monsters knowing that Loki was one and it was possible he would find out he was one so of course that will make Loki think Odin views him as a monster. As for Thor I do think that he loves him and treats him well but before Thor is banished he says some condescending stuff to Loki like know you place brother. Plus Thor just being there is always going to remind Loki that he is not the worthy son in Odins eyes it’s not Thor’s fault but that’s just how it is.
@Alewaxon
@Alewaxon 3 жыл бұрын
@@samskewes1298 We don't actually have anything that supports the opinion that "Odin taught Loki that the frost giants were monsters" in the way that you are implying it, like Odin time and time again made comments or told stories about how awful that particular race was... We only saw that story being told at the beginning of the movie and as far as we know is a common, well know, story that has been told to everybody in Asgard... It is part of their history but I don't think there is a way you can make the argument that Odin made it a habit of pointing out specifically to Loki how awful the Frost Giants were. In fact, after the attack on Thor's coronation day and even when he went to rescue Thor, Odin showed a huge amount of restraint towards the Frost Giants and a degree of respect towards them and specially their King; now, this was mainly to avoid war with them but the reality is that if Odin was so adamant on hating that entire race as you claim he could've easily killed them all long ago or even in that moment. So I don't really agree with the claim that Odin was specific and relentless on putting down Loki's race, specially if someone claims that he also did it on purpose with the goal to make Loki hate himself.
@Alewaxon
@Alewaxon 3 жыл бұрын
@@samskewes1298 Now, about the claim of favoritism towards Thor... That was probably the case but then to make Odin look as 'the terrible father' you have to make the argument that he did it on purpose and with the intent to hurt Loki... The same goes to this idea that Thor overshadowed Loki; you have to make the case that Thor did it with the intent to put his brother down... Which neither of them did... The reality is that favoritism aside, Thor and Odin are far more powerful than Loki; jealousy from Loki's part was bound to happen just as a result of Thor being more powerful than him because that (in Loki's mind) is probably what made him the front runner for the throne. Odin might have showed Thor some favoritism but that is still far from accusing him of doing it with the intent of hurting Loki... Thor might've been a brat towards his brother from time to time, but that is far from this idea that he was intentionally abusive towards him; because we have also seen or heard many other tales of them growing up that were nothing but fun, playful, etc... So it's not a pattern of behavior. I believe that Loki's jealousy towards Thor and Odin's perceived preference for Thor is very well put by Frigga on a deleted scene from 'The Dark World', where Thor asks her if she regrets teaching magic to Loki and she answers "Your father and you cast large shadows"... And I think that's one of the main sources of Loki's jealousy, how powerful and commanding they are, specially Thor. At the end of the day that still makes Loki's ill intentions and ill feelings towards Odin and Thor one sided... Loki went against them and developed bad feelings towards them, not the other way around.

Definilty my favourite movie of the first phase. (I love all the thor movies though.) I find it's also a good example of why bringing in more unknown actors as an oppertunity to show their talents on a larger scale is a good thing. Cause I believe Both Tom and Chris weren't as known before hand. (And it worked out. They both did their roles wonderfully. ) This was fun. ^^

Omg I love watching you react to this, your opinions and analysis are AMAZING. What I've learnt from the Thor movies, is that when Thor says that Odin is the greatest father that's complete bs. The MCU is full of bad parents but Odin takes the crown because marvel never recognizes how bad he is. Even when you love your children that doesn't make you a good parent and Odin fucked up in that role. He of course showed favoritism towards Thor, he lied and told them BOTH that they were king material even when only Thor was the chosen one, he taught them both of war and conquering and superiority, and then expected a behavior that didn't reflect that upbringing? And what's worst, loki was raised in a culture that completely rejected his own, like think about it, it's like xenophobia, thor said it himself, they were taught to "haunt the monsters and kill them all", can you imagine what kind of psychological break that would create in a person to find out that those monsters are your own kind? And Odin was the one who promote that shit. Sorry for this... You can obviously tell that I'm an Odin hater and the next films are like WORSE 🤣. I'm subscribing and expecting your journey.

45:35 Absolutely agree! The family dynamics and drama is what really stands out to me about this movie. It's well crafted and surprisingly relatable. It's so heartbreaking to me how these two brothers have their relationship torn apart by rivalry (only one of you can ascend to the throne, but both of you were born to be kings/it all makes sense now why you favoured Thor all these years), and by the secret of Loki's heritage. Because the brothers could be such a powerful team, complimenting each others skillset so well.

There is a HUGE difference between being adopted and being appropriated. One is legal and considered the greatest act of love that a person can give and it ensures the right of the child to be informed about his origins. The other is a crime punishable with jail in all civilized cultures. Loki was not adopted, he was taken as a political tool to secure "peace" for the Asgardians. Adoption is always done procuring the benefit of the CHILD NOT THE POLITCAL CONVENIENCE OF THE ADOPTIVE FAMILY. Question: what do we know about Loki's biological mother? Was she killed during the war? Did she agree with Odin's decision to take her son to be raised by her worst enemies? Everyone is too eager to give Odin and Frigga a pass for what they did to Loki, but none of them even tried to apologize for lying to him his entire life. That is why Loki is so popular, his struggle is the most human of all.

I always liked Thor but knowing a little Norse Mythology Loki power is a bit more then what you see in these movies but it does show his biggest power which is trickster who had the ability to change his shape and sex and mischievous antics and devious deceptions, I know there is a few Aussie in these movies but have support Chris Hemsworth.

34:58 I see Thor as having been very immature about his own and his friends mortality, the way young people sometimes are, thinking that it won't happen to you or yours. Maybe thinking his father had died changed that, or maybe he just started to think a bit more before acting.

**"Spoiler"** i know this was before hela and all that. And the story might have come on later (i doubt since avengers story prolly laid put already) But it fits perfectly. I guess Odin was scared for Thor having that same bloodlust that she did, sating her thirst for conquest in guise of peace keeping or keeping things in order. Odin needed to teach him the lesson he learned the hardway. Difference might have been Hela was too far beyond after her banishment but Thor changed quickly.

23:38 23:49 24:24 24:39 It was cool to see Hawkeye introduced in this film, but I definitely wish he had more screen time in Phase 1 to showcase his skills lol. Hawkeye & Black Widow were often shit on by fans for being weaker than the other Avengers, but I've always loved their characters tbh - I love the bow & arrow as his signature weapon (especially w/ his trick arrows), & thought it was cool that he & Natasha were able to fight at the levels of Gods & monsters.

I mean, Thor was willing to leave without doing anything until Laufey insulted him when he was getting ready to leave, and they did infiltrate Asgard and attempt to steal the cask of eternal winter or whatever, which would definitely be a treaty violation itself. So both sides are in the wrong, though Thor is probably more to blame. I do think Odin did make a mistake in one thing though. Banishing his strongest warrior whole a war is brewing probably wouldn't be my guest move, though I think it's obvious he did it to teach Thor a lesson
