Don't Take The Girl does a good job of showing how perspective often changes as we grow, illustrated nicely by how the same phrase takes on a completely different meaning as a boy becomes a man.

You are the first reactor I've seen that actually acknowledges that his wife lived. Everyone else misses that. If you only heard this song on the radio, as I did, the ending leaves it open to the listener's interpretation.

The "girl" was blonde. As was the little boy at the end. The woman at the end was brunette. Sorry.

@@hulkslayer626 Could have dyed her hair. Could be a different family. It's supposed to be left up to interpretation, to personalize it to everyone.

@Cole Edward I disagree... they usually have a clear idea of what they want to do when filming videos. They plan it all out ahead of time and make sure that it follows/compliments the song and is easily understandable. So while they could have had the little girl start off blonde, then the teenage girl have red hair because she was going through a phase, and then have black hair when pregnant because that's the color she liked best, it wouldn't have been as easy to follow. They wouldn't have said "women change their hair color all the time, everyone will know it's the same woman." They kept it consistent to make it easier to follow.

So glad you caught on that she survived and named her son Johnny after his Daddy and that was her running to them at the end.

As someone who never saw the video and never thought about it assumed the baby was named Johnny after his dad and the cycle continued.

My husband was career Army and we attended a military ball every year. We were stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS from '93-'99 and after "Don't Take The Girl" was released it was played every year. His military specialty was small so for most of his career we knew just about everyone wherever we were stationed. The scene was always a sea of dress uniforms and formal dresses (I told my DH that I got to go to a prom every year for 23 years!) and when the song was payed the majority of the females were in tears by the end of the dance. Even now I still surreptitiously wipe away a few tears when the song plays.

that was her running at the end, she survived. the point of the song was about the change of context of "don't take the girl". his dad told him "one day you'll change your mind".

The BEST song stories that grab and move people are country music songs...George Jones - "He Stopped Loving Her Today", Randy Travis - "Three Wooden Crosses", Tim McGraw - "Don't Take The Girl", Brad Paisley - "He Didn't Have To Be", Craig Morgan - "Almost Home" and the list goes on and on...

I hope one of your patreons suggest Brooks and Dunn, "Believe." Great story song. But there are so many story songs in country music, it is difficult to pick just one. Some are touching and some are even funny.

There are loads of brilliant songs and ones alot sadder and deeper than this one lol. Hurt by Johnny Cash, Teddy Bear by Red Sovine, Whisky Lullaby by Brad Paisley ft Alison Krauss to name a few. But there are some funny or upbeat ones like Not As Good As I Once Was by Toby Keith, a lot of the Waylon Jennings, Tom T Hall ones and Chattahoochie by Alan Jackson (who also does a good song about the 9/11 terror attack called Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning). Reba McEntire, Tanya Tucker, Garth Brooks, Kris Kristofferson and loads of others out there.

Truth, you want to listen and react to Brooks and Dunn "Believe" or Rascal Flatts "Skin" That was a wonderful reaction. For another McGraw song try "Stay humble and Kind". If the music doesn't move you it's just a song. Upbeat..hmm Garth Brooks "We shall be Free",

If you want a different style of country, check out the group Home Free. Its a country accapella group (tho they add their country flavor to other genres as well.). Their song “man of constant sorrow” is good. But thry also have 2 john denver covers of “thank god im a county boy” and “country roads take me home”🌹

Yeah, the song makes no mention of something as important as the wife's survival. The video shows a female, presumably the wife, at the end. So who do we believe? I have to go with the song, since the video is based upon the song, not the reverse.
