Fun Fact: Burt and Heather used the following firearms to kill the Graboid that burst into their rec room: Stey-Mannlicher SSG-PII, Winchester model 70, Winchester Model 1200 Defender, HK91A2, Colt AR-15 Sporter II, Remington 870, Sig Sauer P226, Ruger Redhawk, M8 flare gun, and then finally Burt finishes it off with a Belgian William & Co. 8 gauge shotgun (The Elephant Gun).

In the late 1980s, zinc oxide literally had its time in the sun when the Southern Californian company Zinka made it cool to paint your nose with the chalk-white sunscreen. ... Because zinc oxide blocks both, it's considered a “broad-spectrum” protectant. Without a shield, the skin can't hold its own for long. One thing that makes this film so amazing is that they've foreshadowed so much from the ending (stampede at the beginning), the noisy fridge, the cat, etc. On top of that how they handled Val & Earl bickering/ignoring Rhonda & her just getting on with showing them... perfect! This is a criminally underrated film.

The crew put *a lot* of effort into making the graboids look super real. Left them out in the sun for a full day, buried them a day, and dug them back up just to get that weathered look. I absolutely love this movie. I like that the townsfolk aren't all idiots making the worst possible decisions all the time, I like that graboids learn and get smarter but no so smart that don't seem like animals, I love that they have a weakness that makes scientific sense with how they're presented, just all of it. This movie's so much fun and I'm delighted every time I see someone new giving it a watch. It really deserves more love than it got back when it was released.

On the topic of CGI and Practical Effects, as was being said in the chat, they're both very useful tools and important in their own way. It's a shame though that CGI is relied on so heavily anymore, to the point that it's effectively killed an entire artform within filmmaking. Even when a movie is made almost entirely practically, ala The Thing prequel, the studios are so afraid that without cgi, it won't sell, that they replace all that hard work with nothing but computer animation. The two can and should exist together to form a cohesive whole. Practical effects for the greater majority will always hold up better over time, while CGI will age more poorly over time. But when used wisely, the two can be amazing to behold, and together can create effects that impress more than by themselves. Obviously there are great examples of CGI aging well, and I won't diminish that either. Point is, having more tools at your disposal is never a bad thing, but overreliance on them when creating certainly can be. It's all in the execution. This movie, among many, many others, is proof of good effects-work trumping budget and technological advancement.
@ShreeNation2 жыл бұрын
Well said! I think the only movie I can think of that blended CGI and practical effects well is Pacific Rim and other Guillermo Del Toro movies. Even his Hellboy movies were a perfect balance of both CGI and practical effects.
@StCerberusEngel2 жыл бұрын
@@ShreeNation Blending the two was done beautifully with Jurassic Park. The stampede scene is a bit rough, but overall, it's one of the best examples, and it's almost 30 years old now. Iron Man's effects hold up very well, honestly, and is a great example of good CG work. And another example of how CG can work well is the original TRON, since the CG elements were meant to be part of a computer world. And of course, Toy Story (when it comes to the toys) is supremely convincing. Actually, now that I think of it, someone needs to make a stop-motion version of Toy Story using the licensed merch. That would be amazing.
@StCerberusEngel2 жыл бұрын
@@ShreeNation Addendum: Fantastic example of the difference between practical and CGI is the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). Real actors in real suits (courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop), doing real choreography. VS the current movies' CGI overload. And while I'm thinking of Henson... Labyrinth (1986) is AMAZING!
@markcarpenter60202 жыл бұрын
@@ShreeNation the best mix of CGI and practical is terminator 2. Most of the shots of the T-1000 were actually practical effects. They only used CGI for shots they couldn't make on real life and most people never even realized it.

From what I know from some movies, some Americans apply cream to protect their noses from burning. I don't know more, but I think it's as silly as it sounds. Movies with giant worms came long before the Mandalorian was even an idea. It makes perfect sense that the creature is composed of one huge body and multiple small ones. The subterranean animals it will most often encounter are too small for such a large mouth, so it is good for it to have smaller mouths to take advantage of that food. They could have tried filling a bathtub with whiskey, jumping in and luring the monster to drink all the whiskey and make the beast drunk. It would have given them all time to get out of town.

I'm pretty sure the underground monster thing started with Dune. Frank Herbert wrote the first book in the series 1965. The first Dune movie came out in 84. Quirky, great costumes, ok effects for the time. There was a mini series that retold the movie/books in 2000. Ok. It goes into more detail of the actual story that the movie in 84 but still not great. My favorite version is the newest Dune: Part One (2021) directed by Denis Villeneuve. (It's stunning you should watch it) It received 10 nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. (like I said it's stunning) Part two is in production along with a show for either streaming or cable. The Sandworms in Dune are enormous. The Shai-Hulud (the Fremen term for the sandworm of Arrakis) translates as "Grandfather of the Desert" , Shayʾ-Khulud is "Thing of Eternity" or "Thing of Immortality".

I love Tremors, it's one of my favourite films. The monsters are dangerous but not unstoppable, with both the people and the Graboids learning about each other. It's a battle of wits with the people being pretty smart about it rather than the plot being driven by them being idiots.
