Best part of this movie is that rdj says “I don’t drop character till the dvd commentary” and then actually did the commentary in character.

So much of this film could've hit the wrong way and turned the movie into a disaster, but it all miraculously works perfectly. One of the best comedies ever made. The stories they all have of making this movie are also incredible. Tom Cruise not only killed his performance, but he came up with the idea for his character. From the backstory all the way down to his chubby hands. Great reaction!
@hellomark1
@hellomark1 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they definitely could make this today, the joke wasn't "RDJ in blackface," the joke was the actor he was playing was making a really dumb decision. Plus they had Brandon T. Jackson there constantly calling him out on it. When this came out the only "controversy" was SJWs trying to make a big deal out of Simple Jack and using the word "retard." But again the whole point was the actor in the movie was making a really bad choice, and they go out of their way to point that out too.
@kuivia

@@hellomark1 The problem is people are even more idioticly PC and overly sensitive and lack even more logic than back then SOMEHOW 😅😅 this movie would bomb nowadays because people don't understand what you said, the joke isn't blackface the joke is "look at this idiotic white dude thinking this is okay" lmao

So as someone who is half Hispanic and half Black, I fucking love this movie!! I showed it to my parents (my mom is the one who's Black) and she found RD j's character so ridiculous and funny; ecause there are those actors who go to an extreme for a roll. My favorite part of the whole DVD is the commentary with Jack Black, RDJ and Ben Stiller. Due to RDJ actually staying in character with the accents yhe whole time and he does not break until the movie ends and then he sounds like himself . One of my favorite movie commentaries of all time and yes I'm a nerd who loves movie/show commentaries; but this is one of my favorites. I saw this with a bunch of my girlfriends and we all found it funny and its a movie I can still see the humor in today. Could it be made now or something similar... I mean with the right cast, the right story and writing it could be; but if everything is not on the point it will fall flat and go up in flames at the same time.

this film came out the same summer as Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man and The Dark Knight. 2008 was a wild one. And to answer your one random question at 33:48 - TiVo was an early 2000's technology. Essentially a digital VCR to record shows. Before cable TV offered onDemand streaming. You could buy a TiVo box and set it to record and watch it later. And fast forward commercials. So cable companies quickly pivoted to offer their own onDemand services, but you couldn't fast forward through commercials. Famously, TiVo made headlines when they released how many hundred thousands of users recorded and rewound the Super Bowl 2004 half time show, where Janet Jackson got her shirt ripped off. Ayyo.

Tivo was the original digital video recorder... you could hook it up to your TV and record shows to save or play back later, and you could rewind or pause live TV. This was before everyone had smart TVs and digital cable or satellite or Netflix streaming services... so.. it was highly novel at the time. A big step up from having a VCR which was the technology that preceded it.

For some early/young RDJ, try Heart and Souls from the mid 90s where he's attached to a couple of souls who can take over his body at will while they try to tie up the loose ends of their lives. Bonus - his love interest is the actress that plays Stillwell in The Boys and "looks after" Homelander. Closer to when he reemerged for Iron Man, he also did a movie called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, an LA noir mystery movie, partnered w Val Kilmer. I think you'd thoroughly enjoy the humor in both of these.

@33:48 TiVo is crazy how fast it was forgotten in time because it was basically a hard drive that allowed you to save Live TV meaning you could stop and rewind live TV, while also saving all your favorite shows. So in this case the TiVo box would have been saving all the camera footage. And Yes RDJ is actually an elite actor it’s a shame most only know him for Iron Man, which is why even tho he loves Marvel he is coming back to play Dr. Doom to show his range.

If you want to see a film that is similar to what the director in Tropic Thunder had in mind when he wanted to take the guys into the field, then watch "84 Charlie MoPic". It's a movie made by real a Vietnam War veteran, shot from the point of view of a single cameraman who's job is to go on patrol with a recon team. The whole movie is shot from that one person's point of view. Roger Ebert, arguably America's greatest film critic said of it (back in 1989 when the film debuted) - "84 Charlie MoPic deserves a place by itself among the films about Vietnam."
