We were obsessed with X-Men when we were kids in the 90's. The deeper lessons on racism in society were not lost on us. They could not have picked a more perfect Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto. This movie is alright, I think they had so many options they didn't know what direction to go. Days of Future Past is probably the best.

Solid story, characters, I actually kind of miss how disgusting a lot of stuff in here was. Rogue, Mystique, Toad, Sabertooth and Senator Kelly all had really gritty and icky displays of power. I personally love the X-Men movies more than all of the other super hero/comic book series. It's a universe well worth exploring. Anna Paquin (Rogue) is also known for her starring role in the sexy vampire series TRUE BLOOD, but I remember her when I was younger, in a very cute movie called FLY AWAY HOME (1996) about a father and daughter who use ultra-light aircraft to lead orphaned geese home. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) is a multi-instrumental musician, singer, and dancer. Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) played Bond girl Xenia Onatopp in GOLDEN EYE, who bat the crap out of James Bond, but my favorite movie of hers is HIDE AND SEEK with Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning. If you haven't 'met' Dakota yet, be prepared to be amazed at this kids acting abilities. Another good one is DON'T SAY A WORD (2001) with Michael Douglas and Sean Bean (Ned Stark-GOT) and the late Brittany Murphy and Sky Bartusiak (another amazing child actor taken away too soon.) Ray Park who plays Toad is a champion martial artist who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Ep-1. Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) got her first job in a poultry plant, cutting up dead chickens, before her 6 feet and good looks (when she's not blue) made her a highly paid super-model. You recognized Ian McKellan as Gandalph is close friends with Sir Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier) who is well known to Trekies as Capt.Jean Luc Picard.

“Why can she fight so good?” I always viewed it as her having complete control over every cell in her body. A biological mechanism of her mutation. As a result, she has strong muscles and has complete control of them. A few decades of fighting practice and she can fight anyway she can imagine. In that hallway scene she’s thrashing Logan with ease at times. She has to to avoid his lethal claws. But she can’t sustain a fight against him. The trail of dead people who’ve tried to kill Logan too horrifying to describe in polite company.

@16:10, fun fact in the comics Mystique and her wife are actually Rogue's foster parents. When she ran away from home they took her under their wing. Eventually Rogue has an encounter with Carol Danvers (aka Captian Marvel) that screws up her mind. So she has to go to the X-Men for help. However, due to the changes that were made for the movie adaptation this relationship never made it into the screenplay. Also Bobby is actual one of the original X-Men alongside Scott, Jean and two other characters that haven't appeared yet. Lastly in X2, we meet a mutant who is actually Mystique's son...in the comics. Fox just totally screwed up the timeline of these characters.

Magneto isn’t a villain, this is something people always get wrong about him. He spent his childhood in a concentration camp, he saw first hand the evils humans were willing to do to other humans so what would they do to superior beings like mutants? He didn’t want history to repeat itself. Yes his methods are extreme but he is doing it from a point of doing what he sees as the right thing. Humans fear what they don’t understand and they either want to enslave it or destroy it.

It's interesting how you can't stand Mystique, the blue shape shifter lady. You made some good points about her always being there to cause trouble. In my generations defence, she was always viewed as incredibly dangerous in the comics, loooooong before there was a movie. If she wasn't the sexy blue trouble maker, that we the comic readers knew her as, on the movie, the movie would've sucked. So, . . . But I'm glad you liked it, and I hope you get enjoy the next one. Adolescent males aren't usually reffered to as men. They are boys. And puberty starts well before you are done growing. Add to that the stress factor that's a common trigger and it's not that odd that a 12y old Logan manifests his mutation. And even in the comics, mutants who manifest powers before puberty are extremely rare. It's not that strange that even Jean wouldn't be familiar with any cases. There aren't that many Franklin Richards around.

Deadpool doesn't really intertwine with the X-Men universe that's why the reference is made about affording more X-Men because the rights are split a little bit. Then the timelines get a little messy. It won't interfere with watching the series. Just some fourth wall breaking references might make more sense afterwards. But ignore the 'Wade Wilson' in Origins. It's a dumbass take on Deadpool.

For clarity: *Original timeline* X-Men: First Class X-Men Origins: Wolverine X-Men X2 X-Men: The Official Game X-Men: The Last Stand The Wolverine X-Men: Days of Future Past [prologue] *Revised timeline* X-Men: First Class X-Men: Days of Future Past X-Men: Apocalypse Dark Phoenix Deadpool No Good Deed Deadpool 2 The New Mutants X-Men: Days of Future Past [epilogue] Logan

Mystique is the best. She's not the strongest, so she uses gymnastics moves and deception to fight with those much more powerful and stronger than her. That's what takes Mystique to the next level as a Mutant.

Magneto is an extraordinary villain. You understand exactly why he's doing what he does, and the Holocaust survivor background to open the movie makes it clear the threat is real. But at the same time his ruthlessness and smugness prevent him from being a hero. Wolverine says it best. "You are so full of shit. If you were really so righteous it would be you in that thing." Charles is also great - I mean it's Patrick Stewart. Jean Luc himself. And they play off each other so well, you instantly believe these two have a long history that has finally come to a head, and that neither wants this but both are committed. And I love Rogue and Wolverine instantly bonding. Dad Logan is Best Logan.

Stan Lee has stated the characters of Professor X & Magneto were a parallel of the relationship between Dr Martin Luther King & Malcolm X.

The best thing about this movie is that it presented the heroes and antagonists in shades of grey. It wasn't like the old school "Super Hero" movies with a purely good guy fighting evil. Instead it gets you to think about motivation and perspective, to consider that an intention could be reasonable, but the execution unreasonable. It's also a parable for how people approach differences in others, whether they feel threatened or supportive and how fear can be used to manipulate large groups of people. It certainly doesn't hurt that it was wrapped in a very attractive package with quality actors, excellent action pieces and great design.

Yeah, I've always thought about the difference as being between a closed fist and an open palm. Both can still do damage, both can still protect. It's just that with the closed fist, you project the more aggressive air.

Actors that played Cyclops,Jean Grey, Professor Xavier, Storm, Wolverine,Magneto,Sabertooth and Mystique hit a 100% bullseye on their role. They screwed up royally with Rogue because unlike the 90's cartoon. Rogue has super human strength and can fly. In this role she doesn't do any of that. So it's almost like she wasted her time. If I was her thats how I would feel. Imagine being Superman but you don't get fly or use your super human strength or fly. Your just there. Other X-Men members I felt they most definitely screwed up on. Are Beast,Jubilee and my favorite Gambit...js

So with Paramount owning Xmen and Disney owning the Avengers, what I am about to say isn't true in any of the movies. Also, it is not currently true in the comics, as they retconned some things. But for decades in the comics Magneto and Mystique had children: a set of twins, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff. Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. The reason we get to have great series like WandaVision where we aren't really ever sure if she is a good guy or a bad guy is that like her parents, Wanda is just doing what she thinks is right, while many of the 'good' guys might disagree with her way of going about it.
