I'm so glad to see you diving more into Idle!! As a giant Neverland, your reactions have been so fun to watch! You've probably already read about this by now, but (G)I-dle is almost entirely self produced. Soyeon writes and produces all of their title tracks and a good chunk of their b-sides. Nowadays, the only tracks that aren't written by Soyeon are written by Minnie and Yuqi. There's some great videos on their official KZbin channel that showcase how things work behind the scenes of their music-- my favorites are the ones that show how the group works producing and recording behind the scenes. It's not this big team of producers and directors, just Soyeon in the producer's seat (or Minnie/Yuqi, depending on who wrote the song), one co-producer next to her, and whichever member is recording in the studio. Soyeon does the work of an entire team dude, and I could watch her issuing directions all day 😂 I definitely recommend checking them out, even if it's just in your own time ❤ witnessing how hands on they are and just how much of themselves they put into their music really helps you appreciate how skilled and hard working the group is 🥰🥰 And I think it reminds us to really take the messages of their music into consideration instead of just blindly enjoying the sound. They put their souls into their work, and because of that, I feel like there's always something new to discover about their songs and videos no matter how many times I consume them. 😂

this song was SUCH a moment, i-dle are definitely known for their messages in their songs (i really recommend checking out allergy and queencard from last year in order too if you haven't already!) their leader soyeon (main rapper) became executive producer around this time meaning that she pretty much has complete artistic control of the groups music and concepts - the other members (most notably minnie and yuqi) are also credited a ton on their songs and the 3 are known as the i-dle "producer line" :)

They are absolutely incredible. Honestly, stanning all of them is legit 😅 For most of Soyeon's songs since - at least - "oh my god", I feel I am missing something if I am only getting one message from any of them. Nxde definitely is talking about objectification and criticism of our sexuality - you can see it in the comments on the phone with Soyeon, as well as the lyrics (a better translation of Shuhua's line is "you're the pervert".) As well as Marylin, there is a musical reference to the opera "Carmen" - am opera that was criticised by some as scandalous as the lead woman - Carmen - seduces men to get what she wants. There are also a lot of references to the Moulin Rouge - again, a place where women were seen as "scandalous" - but that also saw the rise of one of the most successful business women and entertainers of the 1920s. The song also critiques the commodification of beauty imo - you see them being auctioned and treated as ornaments. Finally, and the one thing that they all mentioned in interviews, is that it was inspired by a Kurt Cobain quote: "I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not. " Soyeon sees nude as not hiding who you are. Marylin received a lot of criticism when people discovered she wasn't a "dumb blonde" but was actually very well read and into philosophy. The book Soyeon read is one that Marilyn was photographed with and is famous for its complexity. As a plus - as the group's name in Korean is literally girl children, for quite a while after this was released, I'd someone tried to search for their search results would be filled with this song.

I'm enjoying your reactions! A couple of comments: first, you have leaped right into (G)i-dle's modern era, which began with Tomboy. But appreciating (G)i-dle means appreciating the 6th member, Soojin, who I see has been mentioned in some other comments as having been the focus of the most recent MV, Revenge. Soojin was forcibly excised from the group in April, 2021, because of dubious grade-school bullying claims. It was clearly a traumatic event for the rest of the members, and the continued existence of the group was even in doubt at the time. Hence the name of the first comeback ep after Soojin was forced out, I Never Die, which included Tomboy. Most often, when a kpop group has a member terminated for a scandal, that individual effectively disappears forever, in part because oppressive contracts bar remaining members from talking about it, but (G)i-dle has consistently kept Soojin in fans' consciousness over time by dropping hints and references until Soojin was able to re-debut as a solo artist a few months ago. Whew. Anyway, I recommend going back in time to when Soojin was active in (G)i-dle to fully appreciate the group. Someone else mentioned Oh My God--a masterpiece, but be forewarned that delving into the Oh My God MV is going swimming in a deep ocean. I suggest starting at the beginning, Latata, or another early MV like Hann (Alone), or even the summer single Dumdi Dumdi. Also, Soojin's re-debut MV, Agassy, is worth a reaction. (If you think it's difficult to pick a bias now....) Oh, my other comment is to put Mamamoo on your radar. Mamamoo is so different from (G)i-dle, but it is the other group (debuting earlier, in 2014) that is notable for consistently overcoming barriers while being resolutely true to themselves as artists and women. Mamamoo is also known as the vocal queens of kpop. I suggest starting with their second MV, Piano Man. Cheers

Tomboy all the way until Queencard have been my favorite (G)-Idle comebacks of all time, but I Oh My God is one of my favorites too even tho it came before those. The English version had my gay ass shook when I listened to it the first time.
