Regarding as to when Pussy actually flipped - most believe it was around Spring '98. The '95 flashbacks could be seen merely as fragments of memory that are purely speculation on the crew's part; their own paranoid guesswork after discovering Pussy had flipped. In S1, mid-'99, Vin told Tony that Pussy was wired for sound, and was busted in Las Vegas "last Spring". In S2, Skip, the FBI handler, says to Pussy, "You've been on our tit since '98". And then in the S2 finale in '00, Pussy said he'd flipped "a year and a half" ago, indicating '98. Now, there was a deleted scene from this episode which shows Pussy brought in by the Feds and shown hidden camera footage of him slinging H before getting busted. In the clip, he says to the buyer, "Have a Merry X-Mas". If that deleted scene is set around Christmas '95 when Puss didn't show for the sit down, then it screws with the '98 theory that's already been established, which is why I think David Chase cut it, and to make the audience suffer a little.

I love how in the first flashback, you can see Pussy and Jackie both staring at the sea while Tony has his back turned to it. Great metaphor right there

First episode was in 1999 and Jackie Sr died pretty quick after it started so to them 1995 was relatively close.

Asking the community: each season of The Sopranos would be promoted in advance with a highly stylized, enigmatic painted photo poster featuring the main cast members. The one for Season 3 has the cast standing on a pier divided by a white line. Some characters are on the left side, others on the right. Ralphie is standing right on the white line. The family members are further separated by a lampost. Was this supposed to mean something?

The joke about Chris "predicting" Jim Carrey playing The Grinch doesn't make sense. That movie was released in theaters in November 2000, and this episode is set during Christmas season of 2000 (aired in April 2001). If 1995 Chris made that comment in one of the flashback scenes, that would have been a good joke, but Chris from late-2000 would have known about the movie.

Skip, the FBI agent assigned to Pussy, said in season 2 that Pussy turned into an informant in 1998. Either the writers wanted the audience to forget that happened or Tony and the guys are just mistaken in this episode and believe Pussy was wearing a wire in 1995 when he actually wasn't.

Yeah to answer your question the Italian mafia was notorious for their hearts and minds tactics in their own neighborhoods and probably inspiration for what cartels do in Mexico (providing toys for kids during holidays, helping administer aid to people when covid had shut the world down). It's a smart tatic to win over the general public in your area. Pablo Escobar was undoubtedly one of the first kingpins seemingly deemed Robin Hood by everyone unaware of the magnitude of his crimes. Regarding all forms of organized crime but especially the famed Italian mob during their heyday? Ask anyone who lived in a mob controlled neighborhood and they will absolutely tell you it was one of the safest blocks to grow up on. Things seemingly changed a bit nowadays. Powerful crime families such as the cartels in Mexico provide the same and even better perks (such as building schools/redoing infrastructure in poor and government neglected areas). Gangs would always capitalize and prey even on the neighborhoods they were supposed to protect/improve yet it does seem much more out in the open nowadays regarding organized crime. Before they'd definitely do the shitty stuff in the shadows but nowadays many organizations simply seem to do more overtly good than bad deeds in the area and that's good enough/better than the government in their view

I think Tony should have made Jackie confront Meadow with what he did ... That way he didn't have to be the bad guy

True. But it most likely was against Tony's personal view. Plus more satisfaction for us (the viewer) when Jackie very bravely "makes things right" infront of Meadow (which buying her nice and expensive gifts, the same Tony does with Carm). You can tell in the gift exchange scene with Jackie Jr and Meadow, it's eating Tony alive but for whatever reason in his mind, he couldn't "snitched" on Jackie. Agree with you though in a real life scenario. Like I said, in my own head there's some unwritten rule or fear of hurting Meadow that forces Tony to not confront them all on it.

​@@mikemcfly1980that's why it is one of the best! It's not just the snappy and irreverent commentary these mobsters provide through dialogue. One of the best aspects of the show is it's "meta-ness". Chrissy talking to Paulie about Keanu Reeves' arc and why he doesn't have one is one of my favorite scenes of this show. So tongue in cheek when you realize it but upon your first viewing it seems very organic cause it's just a young thug wanting to get his moment of limelight. Something we all can seemingly notice nowadays in all organized crime. People now want clout more than money, power, etc for their loved ones
