First Wash in 34 Years. 56 Miles! Barn Find Buick Grand National

This is a 1987 Buick Grand National that has 56 original miles found in Columbus Ohio and trailered back to NYC. We are pulling it out of the garage and giving it its first wash in 34 years! The Buick Grand National was faster than the Chevy Corvette in 1987 and was called "Darth Vaders Car" in various automotive publications. After we remove it from the Barn, we trailered it up to the AMMO Studio for a full restoration detail, foam wash, black paint polish with Rupes buffer, AMMO Reflex Pro, and a reveal to the owner at the very end of the episode. I was detailing a car for an older guy in my neighborhood, and he knows that I’m a car enthusiast. When I was detailing his car, he came to me and said “let me show you something”. He opened his garage, and sitting right there was a pristine 87’ GNX. My jaw completely dropped. When he asked me if I wanted to take it for a spin, it felt like I was melting inside. Definitely one of the coolest days of my life.

They were coochie coolers woman wore dresses back then and in my town soccor moms drove these more than dudes. We honestly didnt think anything of those ac vents in TX any AC helps 8 mos outa the year. 16-17,000 of the black GNs were made in each year '86-87 so they are actually the least rare of alll the turbo regals. Very common to see 2-3 a day if these things running down the road not a big deal. Kinda like the 96 Supra Turbos all the kids pray too now lol.

I was a 30-year-old line repairman on the reverse line at Pontiac Motors in 1987, where that car was built (I don't know if it was made somewhere else). I believe it was every 10th car in rotation with other Buicks and Pontiacs. What a fantastic car with a very distinct sound in comparrison at that time; this sure brought back memories. God bless!

The original owner was a personal friend of mine named Gary young. Gary passed away in 2006. It is amazing how fast a vehicle deteriorates in 14-15 years without proper care. This man had a collection of cars the would rival most. It is sad to see that no one took the time or had the passion to keep the car in good standing. Thank you and the new owner for taking the time to bring it back to the condition it deserves.

I'm amazed the engine sounds that good, no hickups or chokes. There seemed to be no issue with the fuel line or intake etc.. amazing. You can tell there were minimal critters in the garage because of the GN guard dog you had there. I like the way the dog detailed the car. It's unreal how the dogs nails could only cut so deep in the laquer, not down to the primer mind, not even close. Thats how the detailer could simply fill in the scratches with the top coat. Black shows every little thing as well, they did a phenom job on the restore.

I never understood why guys will just let the cars rot away. Growing up a friend of mine's dad had a 65 GTO he bought new and never drove it. He said it was his special baby. He never even took his son for a ride. He died around 1990 and the car was sold within 2 weeks. He had only put about 7500 miles on that car. It is like not getting frisky with your girlfriend to keep her fresh for the next guy.

Back in 1987, I lived right next to Fisherbody 1 in Flint, MI. That's where the body of this car was built. A friend who worked there, gave me a tour of the plant between shifts. I saw the welding areas where sheet metal parts would become car bodies, down through the anti-corrosion wells where they would coat under the bodies. Then, some ovens and the paint areas with the bells that would give the bodies their coats of paint. And finally, more ovens that would dry and cure the paint. Then, I saw the area where the upholstery was sewn up and pulled over the seat frames and foam cushioning. Then, I visited a smaller assembly line where the dashboard assemblies were built, and finally the final assembly where the carpets, components, seats, furnishings, dashboards and steering columns would meet their respective bodies. In fact, I may have even seen the very seats for this car before its body was assembled. And perhaps the body to this car going down the assembly line. The plant where the body of this car was built was closed on December 30, 1987. These were among the last of the body-on-frame mid-sized cars made by General Motors.

mud mower ... every low mileage barn find has a story and they are usually health or death related. Guy buys it then dies, wife doesn't drive or can't drive stick shift. Guy buys car and gets drafted to the military, never makes it back. Locally we had a guy buy a car for his weekend / summer home in the country and only put about 500 miles on it each year. When he died the wife moved back to the city and sold the car with the house. It was a Buick Roadmaster "woodie" wagon with just over 10k on the clock when I saw it 10 years ago.

It’s a result of unforeseen circumstances typically from my experience what ever value that holds lol. For example a mechanic up the road from me got his hands on a 2004 Skoda Octavia 1.6 manual from a man and his wife. Now I know it’s nothing exciting but it’s a perfect example of unforeseen circumstances, the original owner traded in his Skoda Felicia for a brand new Octavia in 2004, he got the car home and a few weeks later his hip went out and he needed a hip replacement so whilst waiting he began driving his wife’s car which was an automatic and she didn’t really drive anymore. He had the surgery but found it easier on his leg to drive the automatic so he just continued to do so occasionally driving the Octavia to the store. Not long after the poor gentleman sadly passed away not long followed by his wife a few years later. The car then ended up in his sons hands and he sold it to the mechanic I mentioned in the beginning and that was that. The mechanic purchased the car in 2014 I think it was and it had a genuine 159 miles on the clock, it was a new Octavia. This is just a personal example of how these cars come to exist.

You broke back memories when I saw the Grand national and then you said Brooklyn, where my family came to America we came to Brooklyn New York and our first apartment in midwood Brooklyn was in a five-floor apartment building of course no elevator and the building caretaker for whatever the tenants need fixing as well taking care of whatever the building needs was a Puerto Rican Vietnam veteran. The nicest, greatest and the sweetest guy you could ever meet literally! I was 9 years old when we came to America my parents loved him a lot and so did I only meeting him for just couple of months when we moved in he would help anybody with anything 24/7 day or night no matter what just ring his bell what any person needed and he lived in the basement apartment. always outside since 6:00 a.m. running around fixing whatever he could find or maintaining the property so it looks nice, everybody is happy and safe most of the time doing stuff for free or just to keep busy and he had his baby the Grand national just like this one black exactly the same he was so proud of it like it was his everything as if it's his baby literally he would wash it by hand every morning before he would start everything else that's how he started the day everyday for a year and a half that we live there same routine no changes just like how you start your day in the military. One day i woke up to go to school as always which was 15 minute walk so I went downstairs and opened the front outside door cane out waved hello to him and he yelled HEY it's a wonderful day for school let me take you for a ride so you don't have to walk and so he did he put on vanilla Ice Ice Ice baby track and we cruised to school booming Ice Ice baby in the Grand national he had a nice system installed he talked about his passion for the car how much he loved it just before he put on the track we pulled up to school and everybody was looking when I came out the car he walked out of the car and gave a look to everybody like a very very serious look as like do not fuk with this kid! I'm watching you all of you yeah it wasn't a good Brooklyn school that's how it was every school was dangerous and he knew it primarily a hood people school and I'm being European small white Jew.. for me that was the greatest day of my life going on a ride to school the Grand national blasting music my first ever american rap music what made it even more funny is that Armando if it's my veteran at that time probably he was mid-40s he looked just as fresh as vanilla Ice I remembered he maintained his appearance his haircut very well groomed.. sadly a year and a half later or so one day somebody went downstairs and he was no longer there then another day passed by and another day passed by and my parents got worried concerned like many other tenants who loved cared for him a lot But unfortunately after we kept asking where is he how is he what's going on we were told that a truck slammed into him at high speed not far away from the building and killed him instantly when he went on his weekly close by Cruise ride 😥 and that it was a pretty pretty bad accident that's what my parents were told. We were extremely sad and distraught like every tenant was. he made out welcome to America so beautiful and accepted by teaching me English to me like he was my older friend and to me he was my older only friend because i had no friends also a kind real friend to my parents helping with the transition coming to a new country you're very helping out is well whatever my parents needed to carry and groceries to the fifth floor again no elevator helping my grandfather woke up the stairs trying to talk to my grandfather we spoke to English at all but they left together pretending they understand everything lol it was a sad day I always remember him and the Grand national. his wife she died many years before of some sort of health condition that's what I remember about her someone mentioning but he didn't talk much about her one point he did mention that she passed but that was it and just from that you could tell it was very very painful to even mention later he he said that he missed her I believe because he got comfortable with my family like as if my family was his family which is a beautiful thing he young alone person dealing with the war horrors in Vietnam which was a very bad war and pretty horrific war now I know about it more as I have a Vietnam veteran friend so I was told some things how bad it was so plus he was dealing with the passing of his wife but after we found out that he died only thing to comfort us with the horrific news of his passing was thinking that he was now with his wife again... As they say Angels come down from the sky to be with us for whatever reason they are sent here and eventually they go back home and the ones that leave us at a young age are usually the angels.. serving in the US army to protect us the American citizens going through that horrific war suffering all of the consequences tyranny and pain return home get married live life suffer pain again by losing his wife but continuing to fight after the loss by giving care love forgiveness to other people for so many years, he definitely was one of the Angels I know that's for a fact it cannot be anything else. Salute to him for his bravery honesty love and respect for others and salute for all the other veterans and current serving the US army! thank you for the Grand National video bringing me back a lot of good memories

I just had to lay out the memory because cars are special they bring out a lot more of good then bad memories and especially watching this video of the Grand National in this situation we are in now in a different america , thinking about strangers helping strangers is these hard times brought back that memory when we just came to America..how suddenly everything its so different and not the same as it was before exactly how it is in this situation we are in suddenly nothing is the same as it as well watching this video and thinking all of this I'm hoping that in our hard time coming to America that we really got lucky to even make here plus we got lucky by meeting him who helped us out not by material stuff just by being kind then hopping people that are struggling now have someone around them that is kind as him to pass this awful time and make it easier to move forward. For me the Grand National resembles few things, of course him, kindness to others, my first time hearing a rap song, my first time feeling that im cool / pulling up to school in a badass muscle car the Grand National blasting vanilla Ice track and falling in love with cars especially pre 1990 some 1980s like the Grand National mostly 1960s 50s 40s and 30s.. anyone have a car that's resembles something truly truly special? that stayed in your memory because of?

Wow! This brings back some great memories. I had one of these back in 1992. I bought it used in beautiful condition with low milage and drove it for two years. Never had a better car. I've never felt as good about any of my subsequent cars as I felt about my Grand National. Lovely work guys.

@@davidward4678 I had three, sold them all because they were just cars and I drove them like they were meant to be driven, which means they had normal wear and tear of any old car and were falling apart accordingly. It makes no sense to buy a car just to let it sit somewhere until your kids or grand kids destroy it after you die.

WOW..Beautiful Car. Back in the late 80's I worked at a service station. There was a guy that brought his Grand National in only for tire changes if I remember correctly. One of the thing I got to do was drive the customers downtown to where they worked in their car and then back to the service station. I remember the customer telling me to step on it one day to feel the power. I am sure I was beaming from ear to ear when that turbo kicked in. In total I got to drive that car on about 4 or 5 occasions. Thanks AMMO for bringing back some of those memories.

Crazy story-I am a female & in 1985 I worked at a dealership (reconditioning). I was given a check & brand new car to drive 30 miles to the city. Gave another dealership the new car I was driving & the check for the brand new Grand National-exactly like this one! I drove it back on the 2 lane highway & went to pass a car & hit the accelerator hard & just about lost control! That sucker was so fast & quick! I smiled after I slowed down a little regaining control. It was amazing just how quick it was! It stays in your blood! Glad to see this one looking so good!
