Love the mallets. They'll get some good use and look good doing it!

You should look into building a Moxon Vice to help hold all those small part. There is also that Wen bandsaw that is really cheap,
@brokenbarbespoke16 күн бұрын
@@PatrickMatherne I definitely have been looking at a new workbench build, but I would like a planer so I can create a hefty top :) once I do that, a moxon vise will be absolutely added to it

Ya know, sometimes it is nice to watch someone make something nice and without all the high-tech fancy tools. And it still turns out like it was made from high-tech fancy tools. Thanks

Hand skill is more appreciated than all-rounded tool-aids.

For that handle you could try to fix it with double-sided tape on a bigger sacrificial piece, and just clamp that one down. I tried this approach on cutting boards and it works like a charm. Or you could just use a belt sander to carve it all out, obviously it helps if you have less material, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
@brokenbarbespoke21 күн бұрын
I thought about that as well, but ended on the "eh, we'll do it the manual way and regroup later." I'm actually planning a few more of these mallets as gifts for family members and I'm probably going to go with a template and flush trim bit in the router to get the shape down. One of my favorite parts of this hobby is having tons of ways to complete a task, each with their own skill set and mastery!

I think that every project you do for the first time feels like a "rite of passage." You go to school on the first time you attempt a new technique, use a tool for the first time and woodworking is a constant learning process. Nice work, it really like how your mallets turned out. I think the comment about how the first one looked like a boy scout made it was mean, not true and insanely judgmental. Keep up the great work!

If you want sand paper for your orbital sander try the 3m cubitron 2, it plows thru wood like nothing you ever witnessed.
@brokenbarbespoke21 күн бұрын
I most likely will be doing this once I upgrade to a sander with a dust collection system where I can hook up an extractor to. I tried a few different once and the mesh 3M worked best with this sander due to that lack of suction and just using a passive bag collector that the motor uses.
@mrinkswitch19 күн бұрын
@@brokenbarbespoke You can hook a shop vac (or dust extractor if you have some money to burn) to your Makita. It will drastically improve the performance of your sander. Get a cheap adapter that's close and a 50 cent hose clamp to crank it down, so it doesn't fall off.
@brokenbarbespoke19 күн бұрын
@@mrinkswitch I should... I really haven't looked that hard, but now that I have a longer hose, it'd be a very worthwhile investment!

Congrats on reaching your goal. I like how you use what you have. The mallets look great, and I'm sure they will serve you well. I am curious if you like the short handle better than the long handle. All the best on your internet adventure.
@brokenbarbespoke21 күн бұрын
@@cheryldawkins7486 Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! For general purposes, the longer one is more comfortable. I think if I were to make a smaller head or more of a precision mallet, the shorter would be better. The grip is good, but it feels better for light and precise forces to be applied.

If you need some good blades to cut curves it hardwood try WOOD CURVES S 75/4 K/5 from Festool, they are not that expensive where I am, around 12$ for a 5pack.
