I just watched this video for the first time. Thank you so much! I'm working on my ESL K-12 endorsement at Idaho State University. I was supposed to have 40 hours of ESL field experience this semester, but due to COVID restrictions it was all cancelled and substituted with online activities. This loss of the field experience opportunity is creating anxiety for me because I still don't know what being an ESL teacher "looks like". Your video provided me with some badly needed information!

9:55 For me, this took about 3 weeks. I teach in a K-5 school. So, most of the potential ELLs will always be in kindergarten. And I want to say thanks for posting the advice on being good to oneself, working on one thing, & getting your classroom management down pat. I'm a first year ENL teacher who pulls out & pushes in, & keeping up with my planning is challenging. But my principal has noted that I have strong relationships with my students (even though some of them still misbehave) & I think that comes from my classroom management style. If you don't have classroom management down & address behavior, then it's hard for all to learn. After hearing that from you, I feel better about my practice & future as a teacher.

Thank you for sharing! I am an ESL teacher who was educated in Puerto Rico, where everything is immensely different. However, I've been teaching in Illinois for the past 4 years (since my first year as a teacher). I also felt thrown to the lions. Specially because in those 4 years I've taught something different each tear, and non of them was ESL ( which was my major). I've done EC, 1st grade Dual Lang. in Spanish, middle school Span. Lang. Arts and U.S. History in Eng. Needless to say, I am exhausted. I took this year (2021-22) off. I am eyeing ESL positions for next year, but I feel so discouraged. I feel like I forgot everything. Also, I am intimidated with the whole push in push out dynamic. That doesn't exist in Puerto Rico, so I have no idea. I am grateful for the transparency and advice of teachers like you Hopefully it'll be enough to prepare me for next year 😬

If you teach young children, "Old McDonald Had a Farm" is one option, and as you sing, you can use different stuffed animals or plastic toy animals. The other more affordable option is to find animal images and print them out and hold them up for the student to see if teaching online. You can also change up the vocabulary and say, "Old McDonald Had a House," and say objects in the home. Example: Sink. And say "with a wash, wash, here," and a "wash, wash, there." Not sure if this helps, but it's one idea for young learners.

I would want to start working as an esol teacher for Spanish speakers and my spanish is pretty good, but not perfect. Thank You
@TheLanguageLady3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! That's a great question. You do not have to be bilingual. The important thing is to be able to make content comprehensible and to know a little bit about the syntax and rules regarding the native language of your students so that you can inform instruction accordingly. It's important to not only make your content comprehensible but also interactive, engaging, and accessible for your students. It is also important to be aware of the language proficiency level of your students so that you are constantly challenging them to improve their English to the next language level.

I'm planning a livestream on that very topic. Stay tuned! 😉 It's a huge topic I hear often. However, to begin, I schedule my time based on students' language levels and get creative with the teachers who teach them. Also, sending lessons to preview ahead of time helps to keep up with lost ground that can occur when you can't always pull them. In my opinion, co-teaching is the way to go if it works with the schedule.

Hello, lovely video. What is the difference between an ESL teacher and a homeroom teacher?
@TheLanguageLady4 жыл бұрын
The ESL teacher is one who provides English language development for students. The homeroom teacher is the teacher the students see first for the day before going to the rest their classes. It's like their home base. ☺️ Thank you for watching.

OMG! How daunting to hear that from your principal as a first year teacher! I would be stressed the heck out too! Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm sure many first year teachers will feel A LOT less lonely in the overwhelm they feel when they realize, we all started out just as nervous and insecure about our ability. Great video!

Hi Giovanna, What you are feeling is completely normal. Remember that you are still an amazing teaching despite the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. Every teacher on the planet is now feeling like a new teacher. You are not alone. I'm so happy my video helped to make you feel reassured. Its going to be okay. Focus on what you can control and the rest will take care of itself. Where in the world are you viewing from?
